There is no established research list of eight adult traits caused by parents who never say “I don’t know.” The phrase itself has not been shown to determine how a child will behave as an adult. Still, acknowledging uncertainty can model intellectual humility: recognizing what you do not know, staying open to evidence and changing your mind when warranted.

That distinction matters. Research on parent-child intellectual humility and children’s judgments about confidence offers useful, limited insights, but it does not establish that a parent’s communication style produces predictable adult habits.

What does “I don’t know” teach a child?

On its own, “I don’t know” is just a phrase. Its value depends on what comes next. A parent might use it to shut down a question, or to show that not knowing is an ordinary starting point for learning: “I’m not sure. Let’s find out.” The second response can model curiosity and a willingness to check assumptions, but it should be understood as a practical parenting approach, not a proven intervention.

Intellectual humility is broader than admitting ignorance in a single moment. It involves recognizing the limits of one’s knowledge and responding to uncertainty in a calibrated way. That does not mean treating every claim as equally uncertain or refusing to take a position when evidence is strong.

What the research can—and cannot—tell us

A parent-child study measured specific behaviors, not adult outcomes

A study titled “Does intellectual humility transmit intergenerationally? Examining relations between parent and child measures” examined 108 parents of children aged 7–10. It used parent self-report and behavioral measures, including a task involving references to knowledge limits and responses to uncertainty. The abstract reports that the self-report and behavioral measures were not correlated. That finding is a reminder that what adults say about themselves may not match how they act in a particular task; it does not show that a parent’s habits cause a child’s later personality.

The study did not follow children into adulthood or identify eight adult habits. Its sample was also highly educated and relatively affluent: 88% of participating parents were college graduates, and 56% reported household income above $100,000. Those figures describe the study participants, not parents generally, and limit how broadly the results can be applied.

Children’s judgments about confidence are not adult consequences

A separate study, “Do children value intellectual humility over intellectual arrogance?”, reports that children did not prioritize unwarranted confidence over calibrated uncertainty in social judgments. Its authors call for more research into why children prefer intellectual humility. This concerns children’s evaluations of confidence and uncertainty; it does not establish how a parent’s certainty affects those children as adults.

Parenting guidance is useful, but is not causal proof

A Washington Post parenting article recommends treating “I don’t know” as an opportunity to learn alongside a child. That is practical guidance, not evidence that saying the phrase produces specific long-term outcomes. Likewise, Brookings discusses intellectual humility in middle and high school students and reports associations with social and learning outcomes; those associations do not show that parental certainty causes adult traits. See its chapter on developing intellectual humility.

Eight possible responses a child might learn—not a validated list of adult habits

The following are plausible ways a child could interpret a home where adults rarely admit uncertainty or error. They are an explanatory framework, not eight outcomes established by research. A child’s temperament, relationships, school, culture and later experiences also matter; no single repeated phrase can explain an adult’s behavior on its own.

  1. Hesitating to admit uncertainty. If certainty is treated as the only acceptable answer, a child may feel pressure to sound sure even when they are unsure.
  2. Seeing mistakes as embarrassing. When adults avoid acknowledging errors, a child could come to treat being wrong as a threat to status rather than a normal part of learning.
  3. Looking to authority instead of evidence. A child may learn that the confident speaker matters more than checking a claim, particularly if questions are discouraged.
  4. Finding it harder to ask questions. If questions are brushed aside, children may become less willing to voice confusion or seek clarification.
  5. Defending an answer after new information appears. A child who rarely sees adults revise a position might have fewer examples of how to update a belief without shame.
  6. Confusing confidence with knowledge. Repeated displays of certainty can make confidence seem like proof, even though the two are not the same.
  7. Having difficulty apologizing or repairing a disagreement. If adults do not acknowledge when they have hurt someone or got something wrong, a child may have fewer models for taking responsibility.
  8. Becoming uncertain about their own judgment. A child may second-guess what they observe if an adult insists on being right rather than considering the child’s evidence. This is a possibility, not a demonstrated outcome of the phrase pattern.

What can parents say instead of pretending to know?

Acknowledging uncertainty need not mean becoming indecisive or handing every question over to a search engine. The aim is to make a knowledge limit visible, then respond in a way suited to the question.

  • For a factual question: “I’m not sure. Let’s check a reliable source.”
  • For a question with no simple answer: “I don’t know yet. Here’s what we do know, and here’s what we’re still figuring out.”
  • When you discover you were mistaken: “I thought that was right, but I found better information. I’m changing my answer.”
  • When you have good evidence: State what you believe and why, while being clear about any genuine limits. Humility is not the same as pretending a well-supported answer is a guess.

This approach aligns with parenting guidance that treats uncertainty as a chance for shared learning. It should not be presented as a guarantee of any particular result in adulthood.

Does never admitting you are wrong harm a child?

Available evidence does not establish that parents who never say “I don’t know” cause a predictable set of adult traits, or that every child raised in such a home will carry lasting effects. The studies discussed here address narrower questions: how parent and child measures of intellectual humility relate, and how children judge confidence and uncertainty. Neither demonstrates adult consequences from a parent’s refusal to admit uncertainty.

It is reasonable to treat openness to questions and correction as constructive examples for children. But it is more accurate to say that this communication style may model curiosity and revision than to claim that it determines a child’s future.
