Fossil teeth can preserve chemical clues about an animal’s food, body water, surrounding vegetation, geological setting and, in some cases, movements. They do not function as standalone thermometers, rainfall gauges or map pins. Each result is filtered through the species’ biology, the tissue’s formation interval, local environmental baselines and chemical alteration after burial. The most defensible conclusions come from combining several isotope or elemental systems with geology, ecology and independent evidence.
What a fossil tooth actually records
A tooth is a biological archive rather than a direct environmental sensor. Minerals and, where preserved, organic components acquire chemical signatures while the tooth forms. Those signatures reflect what entered the animal’s body through food and water, how the animal processed those inputs, and the conditions in which the tissue mineralized. A measured value therefore represents a chain of causes: environment to food or water, food or water to the animal, and animal physiology to tooth tissue.

The chain matters because several different environments can produce similar tooth values, and the same environment can produce different values in animals with different diets, drinking habits or physiologies. Burial adds another complication: groundwater and sediment can introduce, remove or redistribute elements. A useful conclusion is usually phrased as “the tooth chemistry is consistent with” a broad environmental interpretation in a stated ecological and geological setting, not as proof of one precise climate or birthplace.

Different isotope systems record different parts of the biological and environmental story. The 2025 synthesis by Stevens, Pederzani, Britton and Wexler surveys carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, oxygen, hydrogen, strontium and zinc in bones and teeth. Their review describes skeletal remains as archives that can preserve signals of dietary habits and other behaviours, as well as environmental and climatic conditions during an animal’s lifetime. That broad potential does not make every element a universal proxy; interpretation remains system- and context-specific.

| Signal | What it can help investigate | Essential qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon isotopes | Diet and the kinds of vegetation represented in an animal’s food web; shifts in vegetation structure in suitable fossil and soil records | The value must be interpreted with the local ecosystem and feeding ecology. It does not identify a named food by itself. |
| Oxygen isotopes | The isotopic composition of body water and, indirectly, environmental water and climate-related patterns | Drinking behaviour, physiology, seasonality and local water sources mediate the relationship. A tooth oxygen value is not automatically a direct temperature reading. |
| Strontium isotope ratios | Compatibility with geological settings and possible changes in location or mobility | A ratio is informative only against appropriate geological and ecological baselines; it rarely identifies one exact birthplace or route alone. |
| Nitrogen, sulfur, hydrogen and zinc isotopes | Additional information about diet, environmental inputs, trophic position or behaviour, depending on the system and archive | Each requires its own biological model, baseline and preservation assessment; the same element can have multiple sources. |
| Trace-element concentrations and isotope compositions | Biological and environmental information related to food, water and geological setting | Post-burial exchange can alter concentrations and ratios, so elemental data are not automatically primary life signals. |
Carbon: vegetation and diet through the food web
Carbon isotope patterns in enamel and other fossil materials can distinguish broad differences in vegetation structure and help investigate an animal’s diet. The inference is about the food web represented by the animal, not a direct list of meals. A grazer, browser and omnivore living in the same landscape may record different carbon values because they use different plants or prey. Local plant communities, habitat mosaics and feeding behaviour must therefore be part of the interpretation.
Oxygen: water first, climate second
Oxygen in tooth mineral is related to the isotopic composition of the water incorporated into the animal’s body. Environmental water itself varies with geographic and climatic processes, so teeth can preserve clues about those patterns. The pathway is indirect: an animal may drink from a river, eat water-rich plants, select seasonal sources or regulate body water physiologically. The 1998 review Isotopic Reconstruction of Past Continental Environments distinguishes this kind of inference from direct oxygen-isotope paleothermometry in archives such as some soil minerals or fish otoliths. Calling every tooth oxygen measurement a thermometer overstates what the archive records.
Strontium: geology and movement
Strontium isotope ratios can help test whether an animal’s chemistry is compatible with the geology around a site and can reveal changes that are consistent with movement between regions. Researchers need maps or measured baselines that show how strontium varies across the relevant landscape, plus sampling that can distinguish local residents from immigrants. Without that framework, a ratio cannot by itself supply an exact birthplace, migration route or travel date.

Why the sampled tissue and interval change the answer
Teeth form incrementally, so a sample records the interval represented by the analyzed tissue rather than the animal’s entire life. The result depends on which tooth was chosen, where within that tooth the material came from and how quickly that tissue mineralized.
Enamel
Enamel generally does not remodel after formation in the way bone does. A well-preserved enamel section can therefore retain a chronological sequence from the period when that part of the crown mineralized. It is often preferred for some dietary and environmental analyses because it is relatively resistant to alteration, but resistance is not immunity: enamel can still exchange elements with burial fluids.
Dentin and bone
Dentin and bone have different formation and remodeling histories. Bone can continually turn over during life, blending signals from multiple periods, while dentin records its own formation sequence. A value from either tissue must be interpreted with its remodeling behaviour and the animal’s age in mind.

Resolution is study-dependent
Fine sampling along a tooth or comparable archive can reveal seasonal or subannual variation in some species and settings. That resolution cannot be generalized to every tooth, species or bulk powder sample. A single homogenized sample may average several growth phases, whereas closely spaced samples can preserve a sequence—if the tissue formed incrementally and the laboratory sampling tracks that sequence.
Preservation and diagenesis: the first scientific test
After burial, fossil apatite can acquire or redistribute elements. Groundwater chemistry, sediment, temperature, time and microbial or mineral reactions can all modify a primary signal. An apparently precise isotope ratio is therefore not useful unless the study demonstrates that the measured tissue still reflects life-era chemistry closely enough for the proposed interpretation.
Researchers commonly evaluate preservation by examining the sampled tissue and its chemical context, checking whether elemental patterns are coherent within the tooth, and comparing results with associated materials or independent indicators. The exact tests vary by archive and laboratory; the important point is that preservation checks must be reported rather than assumed. Enamel’s usual preference over bone for some work reflects its lower remodeling and often better durability, not a guarantee that every enamel value is pristine.

How scientists move from a tooth to an environmental interpretation
- Define the question. Decide whether the study is testing diet, vegetation, water source, geological setting, mobility or a combination. An isotope system should be selected because it records a relevant process, not simply because it is measurable.
- Identify the archive and formation interval. Record species, tooth, tissue, anatomical position and sampling geometry. State whether the sample represents a narrow growth interval or an average across a larger part of the crown or root.
- Establish local baselines. Compare values with modern or fossil plants, waters, soils, rocks, fauna or other materials appropriate to the region and time period. Strontium mobility claims especially require geological baselines; oxygen claims require knowledge of local water variation.
- Check preservation. Test whether burial alteration could have changed the element or isotope ratio. Explain which observations support preservation and which uncertainties remain.
- Model biological filtering. Account for diet, drinking behaviour, physiology, trophic position, seasonality and age. A value entering the body is not necessarily transferred unchanged into enamel, dentin or bone.
- Compare independent evidence. Use geology, associated fossils, habitat reconstruction, dental microwear, anatomy and other chemical systems where available. Agreement strengthens an interpretation; conflict is evidence that the causal model needs examination.
- State the conclusion at the supported scale. Report a broad environmental compatibility, a constrained set of possible settings or evidence for a change in location. Give a narrow temperature, rainfall total or route only when the calibration, baseline, preservation and sampling resolution justify it.
What fossil teeth can and cannot establish by themselves
Climate and temperature
Tooth chemistry can contribute to climate reconstruction when environmental water, seasonality, physiology and local variation are understood. It can indicate that a set of conditions is compatible with the observed oxygen or other isotope pattern. A single tooth value normally cannot establish a unique air temperature, annual rainfall total or climate classification, because multiple combinations of water source, season and animal behaviour can produce similar chemistry.
Rainfall and water source
Oxygen isotopes may help distinguish water regimes or changes through time, but the relevant comparison is usually among measured or modelled local waters. Drinking from a river, consuming plants, using seasonal ponds or moving between habitats can all shift the signal. The chemistry may support a change in water source or hydrological setting without identifying one precise stream.

Carbon and other dietary signals can reveal broad differences in food webs and vegetation structure. They do not, without supporting evidence, name a particular plant species or prove that an animal ate one advertised food. Feeding ecology, plant availability and trophic relationships determine what the value means.
Best Value
Birthplace and migration
Strontium and related geological signals can show that an individual is compatible with one geological region and less compatible with another, or that sequential samples are consistent with movement. They cannot automatically recover a complete route or pinpoint a birthplace. The strength of the claim depends on baseline density, geographic variability and the temporal resolution of the samples.
Seasonality and life history
Incremental sampling can reveal repeating chemical changes that are consistent with seasonal shifts, growth cycles or movement. The pattern must be tied to known formation rates and checked against alternative causes such as changing diet or water source. Bulk samples erase some of that timing information.
Why multiple lines of evidence matter
Stable isotopes and trace elements are strongest when interpreted with ecological and geological context. Dental microwear can provide an independent view of food texture and feeding behaviour; anatomy and biomechanics can suggest how an animal was adapted to use its habitat; associated fauna and sediments can constrain the available environments. These lines can disagree. A hominin may have a chemical dietary signal that conflicts with an expectation based on anatomy, and that conflict should be investigated rather than hidden. It may indicate flexible feeding, changing habitats, seasonal behaviour or a limitation in one proxy.

Modern ecosystem studies and experiments are valuable because they test how environmental inputs are transformed by living animals before reaching teeth. Without that calibration, a chemically plausible interpretation may still be biologically wrong.
A practical checklist for evaluating a published claim
- Does the study identify the isotope or element and the process it is expected to record?
- Are species, tooth position, tissue type and sampling interval specified?
- Is the local environmental or geological baseline measured or otherwise justified?
- Does the paper explain drinking, diet, physiology, trophic position and seasonality where relevant?
- Are enamel, dentin or bone treated according to their different formation and remodeling histories?
- Are preservation and diagenesis checks presented for the actual samples?
- Does independent evidence support the proposed habitat, diet or movement?
- Is the conclusion expressed at the resolution the samples can support, rather than as a single exact location or climate value?
These checks separate what a proxy directly measures from what a study infers. They also explain why two studies using the same isotope can reach different conclusions when their species, tissues, baselines or preservation histories differ.
The defensible bottom line
Fossil teeth can preserve valuable, time-specific evidence about diet, vegetation, body water, geological setting and movement. Their chemistry is indirect and conditional: biology filters environmental inputs, tissues record different intervals, and burial can alter the signal. Treat a result as one piece of a calibrated environmental reconstruction. The strongest claims combine appropriate isotope systems, explicit local baselines, demonstrated preservation and independent ecological or geological evidence; a lone value should be read as a constraint on possibilities, not as a complete ancient-environment diagnosis.
