As of The Indian Express’s October 6, 2026 report, most measures—including hostel wellness secretaries, play areas, changes to the flexy-mess system and exam deterrents—were proposals or still under discussion, not confirmed completed changes.
What IIT Bombay announced
The Dean of Students’ Affairs communicated the measures to students on behalf of director Professor Shireesh Kedare. The report said the institute had appointed an associate dean for student wellness. It described the other steps as proposed, in development or under consideration.

Which changes were still proposals?
The report did not establish that hostel wellness secretaries had been appointed, play areas built, fans replaced, mess arrangements changed or new exam rules adopted. It said phased rollout was expected to begin during the week of October 6, 2026; that was an expectation at publication, not confirmation that any measure had begun.

Play areas and hostel fans
Play areas were at a consultation stage. The report gave no locations or design details. Fan replacement was also unresolved: although options had been identified, they were not named, and student feedback was expected before a final decision. The article does not establish that the institute planned to install air conditioning, air purifiers or any particular alternative.

Mess and exam measures
The proposed flexy-mess changes were not explained. The exam measures were described only as first drafts intended for discussion at an emergency senate meeting, so they should not be treated as adopted rules.

The Indian Express reported that Sahil Wakode died by suicide on September 18, 2026, hours after he was allegedly found using a mobile phone during a mid-semester examination. The allegation should not be read as an independently established finding. The report said his death prompted campus protests and serious student concerns; it does not establish a causal account of his death.
