CCA means copper-clad aluminum. It describes the conductor inside a cable, not its fire or installation rating. Before running Cat6 through a wall, check both the conductor material and the cable’s markings for the route. CCA’s higher electrical resistance is a particular concern when the cable carries Power over Ethernet (PoE).
Why CCA matters in a Cat6 cable
In CCA cable, aluminum forms the conductor with a copper cladding. That is different from a solid-copper conductor, even if a product listing simply calls the cable “Cat6.” UL says cable products using aluminum or copper-clad aluminum are identified on the product, tag, or carton. Look for wording such as “COPPER-CLAD ALUMINUM,” “AL (CUCLAD),” or “CU-CLAD AL.” UL’s communications cable marking guide describes these material markings.

The electrical difference matters because CCA has higher DC resistance than copper. That can make it a poor choice for PoE, which sends power over the network cable as well as data. Fluke Networks discusses CCA resistance and PoE concerns in its application note. ICC reports that, for the same diameter, CCA cable has 55% greater electrical resistance than copper; ICC’s page does not establish a publication year, and the figure is a same-diameter comparison—not a universal value for every cable construction. ICC’s explanation provides that comparison.

Those concerns are reasons to be cautious, not proof that every CCA cable will overheat or fail. A 2023 NECA/BICSI presentation identifies CCA as a fire-safety and overheating concern for network and PoE cable, but no specific cable is tested here. The presentation addresses the risk in that context.

Check the material, listing, and route before installation
- Identify the conductor. Check the cable jacket, tag, and carton for copper, aluminum, or copper-clad aluminum wording. Do not rely on a generic marketplace title alone; confirm that the actual package and cable markings agree.
- Verify product identity and certification. Match the markings on the cable to the manufacturer’s product information and certification details. ICC recommends checking its UL file and certification information, as well as the cable and package markings. ICC’s cable guidance and ICC’s jacket-marking reference show the kinds of information to check, including cable type, gauge, pair count, temperature rating, and verification marks.
- Trace the route. Determine whether any part of the run passes through a vertical shaft or through a space used for environmental air. A concealed wall run is not automatically a plenum.
- Consider whether the cable carries PoE. If it supplies power to an access point, camera, or other network device, take the conductor’s resistance seriously and use cable specified for the application.
What CMP, CMR, and other jacket markings mean
CCA describes conductor material. CMP, CMR, CM, and CMX describe communications cable types and intended uses. They answer different questions, so a suitable conductor does not by itself establish that the cable’s rating fits the route.

The same NFPA revision report reproduces this Article 800 text: “Conductors in communications cables, other than in a coaxial cable, shall be copper.” That is language in a 2020 revision report, not proof of which code edition or provisions a particular jurisdiction has adopted. Applicable requirements depend on location, adopted code, route, and installation details; check with the authority responsible for the installation if the requirement is unclear.

For a new run, look for solid-copper Cat6 bulk cable with a rating that matches the route. For example, Prysmian lists GenSPEED 6000 Cat6 with 23 AWG solid bare annealed copper conductors. It offers a CMR version identified as NEC/CEC Type CMR (UL 1666) for non-plenum use and a CMP version identified as Type CMP (NFPA 262) for plenum use. Prysmian’s product data sheet documents those specifications; choose the version that fits the actual route.

When comparing products, use the manufacturer’s specification and the physical cable markings to confirm conductor material, listing, and route rating. Search phrases such as “solid copper Cat6 CMR bulk cable” may help narrow a product search, but phrase matches alone do not establish the cable’s construction or suitability.
