1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTV sound that cuts in and out can be caused by an output setting, a muted or low-volume connected device, a problem with one channel or source, a loose cable, a Bluetooth connection, an external speaker, or the TV itself. The quickest way to narrow it down is to check whether the dropout happens on every source and audio output, then use the TV’s sound test if available. The checks below help identify which part of the audio chain needs attention without assuming the TV is defective.
First, find out where the sound cuts out
Note when the dropout happens and what remains stable. Does it affect one channel, a streaming app, an HDMI input, every source, only the TV speakers, or only a soundbar or Bluetooth speaker? Does the picture remain steady? If the problem started after connecting equipment or changing a setting, include that in your notes.

These patterns are clues, not proof. A problem confined to one channel may involve reception or the provider; one limited to a connected box may involve that device, its signal, or its connection. Dropouts across multiple sources or in the TV’s own sound test warrant closer attention to the TV’s audio path. Manufacturer guidance does not establish how frequently each cause occurs, so there is no reliable basis here to call any one cause the most common.
Check mute, volume, and the selected sound output
Make sure the TV is not muted and that its selected sound output matches the device you intend to hear. Check the volume and mute controls on any set-top box, streaming device, soundbar, or other connected equipment too. If you recently disconnected an external speaker, the TV may still be routing audio to it.

- The test reproduces the dropout: Follow the TV’s diagnosis and service advice; the TV’s own audio path may need attention.
- The test sounds normal: Check the program signal, the affected source, and connected audio equipment more closely.
- Only one channel is affected: Ask the broadcaster or TV service provider about reception or signal trouble.
- Only one external source is affected: Restart that device and check its settings and connection before concluding that the TV is at fault.
LG describes the sound test as a way to help distinguish TV-speaker trouble from broadcast reception or a connected peripheral. Its sound-test guidance and audio troubleshooting guidance are specific to LG sets; other manufacturers may offer different tools or steps.
Inspect wired audio connections
If the affected path uses HDMI, check that the cable is firmly seated at both the TV and the source device or soundbar. Disconnect and reconnect both ends. If the problem remains on that path, try a known-good HDMI cable that is compatible with the equipment. LG also recommends power-cycling the TV and connected device during troubleshooting.

For optical audio, make sure the cable is secure and the TV is configured to send sound to the connected wired speaker. Consult both devices’ manuals for their exact settings. Testing another cable can help isolate a cable problem, but it will not fix an issue caused by a channel signal, an output setting, Bluetooth, an external device, or TV hardware.
Troubleshoot Bluetooth and wireless audio separately
Check that the speaker or soundbar is paired and selected as the TV’s audio output. If the connection seems unreliable, unpair and pair the device again, then compare Bluetooth with another available audio path or device. Reducing distance and obstacles between the TV and speaker, and moving devices away from potential wireless interference, may help isolate a connection problem.

For Bluetooth dropouts involving an LG soundbar, LG advises keeping the soundbar at least 3 feet (1 m) from the Wi-Fi router and removing obstacles between it and the connected device. This is model-specific manufacturer guidance, not a universal guarantee. A wireless subwoofer dropping out is a separate issue from the TV’s Bluetooth link to a soundbar; follow the audio system maker’s instructions for that exact model rather than applying a reset procedure intended for another device. See LG’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance and wireless subwoofer guidance.

- One channel or program is affected: Contact the broadcaster or TV service provider about reception or signal issues.
- One box or other connected device is affected: Check its settings and connection, restart it, and consult its maker or service provider if the problem follows that device.
- Only a wired path is affected: Reseat the connection at both ends, then try a compatible known-good cable if needed.
- Only Bluetooth or a wireless subwoofer is affected: Test that wireless path independently and use the audio device maker’s model-specific instructions.
- The TV sound test reproduces the issue, or dropouts persist across sources: Contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified technician for diagnosis.
A sound test or source comparison can help identify which part of the system to investigate, but it cannot by itself confirm a failed component. Avoid replacing TV parts without a diagnosis.
