The recurring Arsia Mons Elongated Cloud (AMEC) is a water-ice cloud created when winds encounter the volcano’s immense slope. Arsia Mons forces moist air upward in an atmospheric wave; the air rises several kilometres, cools rapidly and, according to a new model, freezes water vapour directly into ice particles through homogeneous nucleation rather than condensing on dust. It is not volcanic smoke or an eruption plume.
What the Arsia Mons cloud actually is
The AMEC is a long, narrow cloud that repeatedly appears west of Arsia Mons, one of Mars’s giant shield volcanoes. Spacecraft observations identify it as a cloud of water ice. The feature is associated with the volcano’s influence on airflow, not with lava, ash or an active eruption. The 2021 life-cycle study assembled observations from Mars Express, NASA’s MAVEN and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Viking 2 and India’s Mars Orbiter Mission, establishing a recurring early-morning pattern (Hernández-Bernal et al., 2021).

Its extraordinary appearance can make it look like a plume: the cloud forms over the western flank, stretches downwind for hundreds or thousands of kilometres, then vanishes within hours. But its material and physics are atmospheric. The European Space Agency’s summary of the observations explicitly distinguishes the AMEC from volcanic activity (ESA, 2021).

1. Winds meet the volcano
Air moving across Mars does not simply pass over Arsia Mons. The volcano’s enormous topography deflects and lifts the flow. This is an orographic effect: a mountain forces air upward, much as terrestrial mountains trigger clouds on their windward sides. On Mars, the thin atmosphere, steep volcanic relief and local wind pattern combine to produce a particularly strong wave downwind of the summit.

2. Moist air rises in a wave
In the current modeling account, parcels of moist Martian air are carried upward several kilometres in only a few minutes. Rising air expands under lower pressure and cools. The ESA report describes a modeled temperature fall of about 30°C in 10 minutes as the air ascends (ESA, 2026).
3. Humidity spikes and ice can form
Colder air can hold less water vapour. As the lifted parcel cools, its relative humidity rises sharply. The model indicates that the resulting supersaturation is enough for water molecules to form ice particles directly. Those particles grow into the visible elongated cloud while winds carry the cloud westward.
What “homogeneous nucleation” means
Cloud droplets and ice crystals on Earth commonly begin on aerosols such as dust, salt or soot. These airborne surfaces act as heterogeneous ice nuclei, giving water molecules a place to organize into a solid crystal. Homogeneous nucleation is different: water vapour becomes ice without first attaching to a pre-existing dust grain or other particle.
The new Mars study added this process to a cloud model after conventional microphysics failed to reproduce the AMEC’s unusual size and rapid life cycle. The model then generated an elongated cloud with characteristics resembling the observations. The associated preprint describes homogeneous nucleation as the missing process suggested by the cloud’s behavior (Hernández-Bernal et al., 2026, arXiv abstract).

This is model-supported physics, not a movie of individual molecules freezing. Researchers infer the mechanism because the model reproduces the cloud when homogeneous nucleation is included. ESA also notes that some modeled details do not exactly match observations, so the result should be treated as a strong proposed explanation rather than a particle-scale measurement (ESA, 2026).
Lead author Jorge Hernández-Bernal described the result as requiring “some exotic physics” that is taught in textbooks but is generally considered theoretical in natural clouds. He also said that, for this cloud, formation appears to occur without needing the usual airborne “stuff” on which ice normally grows. Those statements describe the model’s implication, not direct observation of the nucleation event.
Why it appears before sunrise and disappears by afternoon
The AMEC has a repeatable daily cycle. The most detailed life-cycle observations were made during Martian year 34 (MY34), and the times below are local true solar time for the volcano region.
| Stage | What happens | Observed or modeled detail |
|---|---|---|
| Before sunrise | The cloud begins over the western slope of Arsia Mons. | Early-morning development is a recurring feature of the observed cycle. |
| Morning growth | The cloud’s tail extends west as the wave lifts and cools moist air. | Rapid expansion lasts about 2.5 hours. |
| Late morning | New cloud formation stops; the existing cloud separates from the volcano. | In MY34, this transition occurred around 8.3–8.7 local true solar time. |
| After detachment | Ambient winds transport the detached cloud farther west. | The cloud can continue drifting even though fresh formation has ended. |
| Before afternoon | The ice evaporates or sublimates as conditions become less favorable. | The visible feature normally fades before afternoon. |
The morning timing follows the balance between the mountain wave, atmospheric moisture and solar heating. Before and shortly after sunrise, the atmosphere can reach the cold, supersaturated state needed for ice formation. As the day progresses, heating changes the stability and humidity of the air; the uplift no longer creates conditions favorable for new ice, and the existing particles disappear by sublimation.

How large and fast is the AMEC?
The dimensions vary from recurrence to recurrence, so published figures are measurements from particular observations rather than fixed limits for every Martian year.
| Quantity | Published value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum westward length | 1,800 km | Maximum extent reported in the 2021 life-cycle study. |
| Typical maximum width | About 150 km | ESA’s summary value; the study generally reports widths below 200 km. |
| Expansion speed | About 170 m/s | Measured during detailed MY34 observations near the rapid-growth phase. |
| Cloud altitude | About 45 km | Altitude reported for the detailed MY34 life-cycle observations. |
| Rapid-growth duration | About 2.5 hours | Observed westward expansion interval in the described daily cycle. |
An 1,800-kilometre cloud is longer than the distance between many terrestrial cities, yet the feature is relatively narrow and short-lived. The apparent paradox is resolved by the wind-driven process: formation occurs rapidly near Arsia Mons, while the detached ice cloud is advected westward and then fades.
When does it recur?
The AMEC returns during southern spring and summer. The 2021 study places annual activity approximately between solar longitudes Ls 220° and 320°, a period surrounding southern solstice (Hernández-Bernal et al., 2021). Solar longitude is Mars’s seasonal coordinate, so these values describe the planet’s position in its orbit rather than fixed Earth-calendar dates.

Activity also changes from year to year. The study recorded less activity in MY33 and a delayed onset in MY34, with the delay likely influenced by the global dust storm. A global storm can alter heating, opacity, circulation and the availability of water vapour, all of which affect cloud formation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it water ice or dust?
The AMEC is water ice. Dust may exist elsewhere in the Martian atmosphere, but the elongated cloud itself is identified as an ice cloud. It should not be labeled smoke, ash or a volcanic plume.
Arsia Mons is also associated with a different recurring feature: a spiral dust cloud documented by NASA’s Mars Global Surveyor images. That phenomenon is described as dust lifted from sun-warmed slopes and converging above the caldera, with examples near the beginning of southern winter (NASA Science Photojournal, 2005). The two clouds share a location but not a material, season or mechanism.

| Daily behavior | Begins before sunrise, expands west for about 2.5 hours, detaches and fades before afternoon | Forms as sunlight warms slope air and drives dust upward |
| Formation explanation | Orographic uplift and atmospheric wave; homogeneous nucleation is the new model-supported step | Dust lifting and convergence over the caldera |
| Relation to eruptions | Not linked to volcanic activity | Also an atmospheric dust phenomenon, not an eruption plume |
Checking the season and material is the quickest way to avoid confusing the two. An early-morning, westward-stretching ice cloud in southern spring or summer is the AMEC; a sun-warmed, dusty spiral near southern winter refers to the separate feature.

What observations support the explanation?
The observational case rests on repeated images and measurements across missions rather than on a single photograph. The 2021 study’s life-cycle analysis used 63 Mars Express Visual Monitoring Camera observations along with data from other spacecraft. Mars Express was especially useful because it could revisit the cloud on hour-long timescales, allowing researchers to follow its growth, detachment and disappearance.
The observations establish several robust facts: the cloud forms west of Arsia Mons, appears in the early morning, expands rapidly, reaches exceptional lengths, detaches later in the morning and vanishes before afternoon. They do not by themselves reveal the molecular pathway by which each ice particle begins. That is why the homogeneous-nucleation claim comes from atmospheric modeling constrained by the observed life cycle.
The model also incorporates the possibility that some atmospheric water is supplied by frost at the summit. The ESA account presents summit frost as a possible contribution, not as a demonstrated measurement of the cloud’s water source. Water already present in the atmosphere is sufficient to be part of the modeled explanation.

Three linked processes produce the striking shape:
- Localized initiation: Arsia Mons concentrates the uplift near the volcano’s western side, so the cloud starts in a relatively small region.
- Fast downwind transport: Once ice forms, high-altitude winds carry it west. The MY34 study measured expansion near 170 m/s at approximately 45 km altitude.
- A narrow environmental window: The wave creates supersaturation only while the morning temperature, pressure, humidity and circulation align. When that window closes, fresh ice formation stops; sunlight and changing air conditions then cause sublimation.
The result is not a permanent atmospheric stream. It is a daily pulse: rapid production near Arsia Mons followed by transport and loss of ice farther west.
What remains uncertain
The broad identity of the AMEC as a recurring water-ice cloud is well supported by spacecraft observations. The exact microphysics is less settled. Homogeneous nucleation is the newly proposed mechanism because it allows the model to reproduce the cloud’s unusual characteristics, but the model does not match every observed detail exactly. Further observations and improved simulations will be needed to determine how often dust-free freezing occurs and how much summit frost contributes.
It is therefore accurate to say that Arsia Mons causes the cloud through topographic uplift and that current modeling points to homogeneous nucleation during the resulting rapid cooling. It is not accurate to say that a spacecraft has directly watched individual water molecules freeze or that an eruption produces the cloud.
The direct answer
The recurring Arsia Mons cloud forms because winds flowing over the volcano lift moist air in a powerful atmospheric wave. The air rises quickly, cools by roughly 30°C in 10 minutes in the new modeling account, and becomes supersaturated. Water vapour then freezes into ice particles—apparently through homogeneous nucleation without a dust nucleus—creating a long westward cloud. Seasonal circulation makes the phenomenon recur in southern spring and summer, while the daily temperature and humidity cycle explains its pre-dawn growth, late-morning detachment and disappearance before afternoon.
