How the northern lights form
The northern lights, also called the aurora borealis, are light emitted by gases in the upper atmosphere. The process begins with the Sun, which continuously releases a stream of charged particles and magnetic fields called the solar wind. Earth’s magnetic field creates the magnetosphere, a region around the planet that deflects and responds to that flow.

Energy can enter and build up in the magnetosphere, then be released. Some of it travels along Earth’s magnetic field lines toward the atmosphere, where energetic particles collide with atoms and molecules. Those gases become excited and release energy as light. NASA summarizes the process this way: “When energetic particles from space collide with atoms and molecules in the atmosphere, they can cause the colorful glow that we call auroras.” NASA Science’s aurora explainer describes this as part of the larger Sun–Earth space-weather system.

An aurora is not sunlight reflected off the atmosphere, and a typical display is not a view of the Sun itself. It is light produced by atmospheric gases after they receive energy from incoming particles. Oxygen and nitrogen emissions contribute to the colors; the appearance depends in part on altitude and particle interactions. NASA’s explainer illustrates red emissions high in the atmosphere, green in a middle-altitude band, and pink nearer the surface.

In other words, the Sun supplies energy to a system that includes Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere; the visible glow is produced here, when atmospheric gases release that energy. It is not simply a stream of solar particles shining like a beam from the Sun to an observer. Earth’s magnetic environment shapes how energy and particles are directed, while collisions in the atmosphere create the light people see.
Why auroras usually appear near the poles
Earth’s magnetic field shapes where auroral particles travel. As a result, auroras most often cluster in oval-shaped regions around the magnetic poles, rather than being spread evenly over the planet. Ordinary auroral substorms commonly produce displays in these high-latitude regions; an unusually large storm is not required for a polar aurora.
Solar wind conditions can disturb the magnetosphere. When the orientation of the magnetic field carried by the solar wind allows it to connect with Earth’s field, a process called magnetic reconnection can transfer energy into the magnetosphere. Energy can also be released through the magnetotail and directed toward the atmosphere. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) can drive major storms, but they are not the only source of auroral activity: fast solar-wind streams and ordinary geomagnetic substorms also play a part. NASA’s discussion of pulsating auroras provides context for the more common polar activity.

A substorm is a more localized release of energy and commonly contributes to polar displays. A major geomagnetic storm is a broader disturbance of Earth’s magnetic environment; it can extend auroral activity over a larger area. The difference is one of scale and reach, not a division between auroras that are “real” and those that are not.
Why a geomagnetic storm can make the lights visible farther south
A geomagnetic storm is a large-scale disturbance of Earth’s magnetic environment. During a strong storm, the magnetosphere is disturbed over a wider area and the auroral oval can expand toward the equator. The result is a greater chance of seeing auroral light at lower latitudes than usual. This is a change in the extent and position of auroral activity—not a movement of Earth’s geographic poles.
At mid-latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, the display may appear low in the northern sky, rather than directly overhead. Its visibility depends on the storm and observing conditions, and there is no single latitude below which auroras can never be seen or above which they are guaranteed. A report from one location is evidence of what happened during that event, not a standing visibility map for that place.

The farther-south effect is therefore not a predictable boundary that moves to the same place every time. Storm strength and conditions vary, and the auroral oval’s expansion does not guarantee that every location under it will have a clear, bright view. A faint glow near the horizon may also be much harder to see than a display overhead. Lower-latitude sightings are unusual compared with the regular auroras near the poles, and they depend on the particular event.
| Feature | Ordinary auroral substorm | Large geomagnetic storm |
|---|---|---|
| Scale of disturbance | More limited activity in the magnetosphere | A broader disturbance of Earth’s magnetic environment |
| Typical reach | Most often associated with high-latitude auroral regions | The auroral oval can expand toward the equator |
| What it means for observers | Polar displays can occur without a rare major storm | Lower-latitude sightings become possible, but are not guaranteed |
How solar activity sets the backdrop
The Sun’s activity rises and falls over solar cycles that last about 11 years, although observed cycles have ranged from 8 to 14 years, according to NASA’s aurora and solar-cycle overview. Higher solar activity creates more opportunities for space-weather events, but it does not predict a sighting at a particular location on a particular night.
The May 2024 auroras are a striking example. NASA reported that the storms occurred during the maximum phase of Solar Cycle 25. Active region AR3664 produced powerful flares and several CMEs on May 8 and 9. According to NASA, the first CME cleared a path through the solar wind for later ejections, and the combined energy produced auroras much farther from the poles than usual. Sightings were reported as far south as Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Mexico, Jamaica, and the Bahamas. Those reports describe a rare event, not a forecast for those places on future nights.
Other events show how far the viewing area can vary. During the November 5–6, 2023 geomagnetic storm, auroras were faintly visible as far south as Texas, according to NASA Earth Observatory’s report. Its satellite image was captured over western Canada at 10:23 UTC on November 5, 2023. NASA also shows an aurora photographed from Maryland with a smartphone on October 10, 2024. That image demonstrates a possible mid-latitude sighting under favorable conditions; it does not make such a sighting typical or certain.
These examples should be read as records of specific storms, not as a promise that the same places will see auroras whenever solar activity is high. Even during solar maximum, local visibility still depends on the space-weather event and conditions at the viewing site. There is no universal southern limit for auroras in the Northern Hemisphere supported by these examples.
How to judge whether you might see an aurora
NASA points observers to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center aurora dashboard. The Kp index ranges from 0 to 9; higher values are associated with a greater likelihood of brighter auroras farther from the poles. But Kp is a rough guide to geomagnetic intensity, not a precise forecast of when or where a local display will appear. NASA’s observing guide explains that solar observations can indicate a chance of activity a day or two ahead, while the outlook becomes clearer when the solar-wind disturbance reaches monitoring satellites closer to Earth and its magnetic orientation is measured.

That means the forecast signal and the viewing conditions answer different questions. Kp can indicate the general level of geomagnetic activity and the potential for a wider, brighter aurora; it does not tell you that a particular town will see one at a particular hour. Local cloud cover, darkness, the direction of your view, and the storm itself still matter. A high Kp value is not a guarantee, and a promising early outlook can become clearer as the disturbance approaches Earth.
Use geomagnetic information alongside local conditions. Clouds can hide an active display, and bright surroundings make faint light harder to see. At mid-latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere, choose a safe, dark location with an unobstructed view north; the aurora may be near the horizon. Check local cloud cover and plan how you will reach and leave the observing spot, including parking. A display can wax and wane or last only briefly, so be prepared to wait. Strong auroras can sometimes be visible from cities, but darker skies improve the view.
- Check the space-weather outlook, but treat Kp as an intensity clue rather than a local appointment time.
- Look for a clear forecast and a dark observing location.
- At northern mid-latitudes, keep the northern horizon in view.
- Allow time for a display to change or appear; a forecast cannot guarantee a sighting.
Optional gear for observing and photographing
You do not need special equipment to watch an aurora. For photography or a more comfortable setup, NASA recommends a tripod to stabilize shots, a red headlight to help preserve night vision, and warm clothing and blankets in winter. Bring extra camera batteries or a phone battery pack if you plan to take pictures; cold batteries lose power quickly, so NASA advises keeping spare batteries warm in a pocket. These are preparation suggestions, not requirements for seeing the lights.
A camera or phone can record a display, but an image should not be treated as proof that the naked eye sees exactly the same color or brightness. Photographs and visual impressions are different records of the same event.
For a simple outing, the most useful preparation is often not specialized gear but a good viewing spot and enough time to observe. A tripod is relevant if you want to stabilize photographs, and a red headlight can help you see while preserving night vision as you set up. In cold weather, warm layers and blankets make waiting more comfortable. Spare batteries are particularly useful for photography because cold conditions can reduce their power; keeping them warm in a pocket can help. These accessories support the experience, but none causes an aurora or guarantees a better display.

Are northern lights caused only by solar flares or coronal mass ejections?
No. CMEs can drive major storms, but fast solar-wind streams and ordinary geomagnetic substorms also contribute to auroral activity. Auroras near the poles do not require an exceptional storm.
Does a high Kp number mean I will see an aurora?
No. Kp runs from 0 to 9, and higher values are associated with a greater chance of brighter auroras farther from the poles. It is a rough intensity guide, not a precise local forecast. Clouds, darkness, the horizon, and storm conditions also affect visibility.
How far south can the northern lights be seen?
There is no single universal latitude limit. NASA reported faint visibility as far south as Texas during the November 5–6, 2023 storm, and sightings as far south as Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Mexico, Jamaica, and the Bahamas during the May 2024 storms. Those are examples of unusual events, not a guarantee for those places.
What should I bring to watch or photograph an aurora?
You do not need special equipment to watch. For photography or comfort, NASA recommends a tripod, a red headlight, warm clothing and blankets in winter, and spare camera batteries or a phone battery pack. Cold batteries lose power quickly, so keep spares warm in a pocket.
