What Causes the Northern Lights, and Can They Be Dangerous?

The northern lights, or aurora borealis, happen when energetic particles guided by Earth’s magnetic field collide with gases high in the atmosphere. Those collisions make oxygen and nitrogen emit the shifting light seen in the sky. The display itself is not described by NASA as a direct physical danger to people on the ground. The larger space-weather storm that can produce a bright aurora can, however, disrupt satellites, radio, GPS and power systems, while astronauts and people flying at high altitude near the poles can face additional exposure concerns.

What are the northern lights?

“Northern lights” is the everyday name for aurora borealis, the aurora seen in the Northern Hemisphere. It is a natural light display in the upper atmosphere, not a beam traveling from the Sun directly to the ground. A corresponding display around the South Pole is called aurora australis.

An aurora is one visible result of space weather: changing conditions caused by the Sun’s particles and magnetic fields interacting with Earth. The same solar activity can produce effects that are invisible, such as changes in the near-Earth radiation environment or disturbances to radio and electrical systems. Seeing an aurora does not, by itself, show that a dangerous storm is occurring where you are.

How the aurora forms, step by step

1. The Sun supplies a stream of charged particles

The solar wind is a continuous flow of charged particles from the Sun. At times, the Sun also launches much larger eruptions of plasma called coronal mass ejections, or CMEs. A CME that reaches Earth can compress and disturb the planet’s magnetic environment, creating a geomagnetic storm.

2. Earth’s magnetic field channels particles toward the poles

Earth’s magnetosphere deflects much of the solar wind. During disturbed conditions, some electrons in the magnetosphere gain energy and are accelerated along magnetic-field lines toward the polar regions. This guidance is why auroras normally appear in oval-shaped zones around the magnetic poles rather than evenly across the globe.

3. Electrons collide with upper-atmosphere gases

As the energetic electrons travel downward, they strike atoms and molecules of oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere. The collisions transfer energy to those atmospheric particles, putting them into excited states.

4. Excited particles release light

Oxygen and nitrogen do not remain excited indefinitely. When they return to lower-energy states, they release the extra energy as photons, producing the colored glow. NOAA compares this light-producing process with a neon light: an electrical discharge energizes gas, and the gas emits light as it settles back down.

Typical auroras form about 80 to 500 kilometers above Earth’s surface, according to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. That altitude is far above commercial aircraft cruising levels and vastly above the ground observer.

Why auroras have different colors

The color depends on which atmospheric gas is excited and on the conditions of the collision, including the energy of incoming particles and the altitude at which the interaction occurs. Oxygen and nitrogen together account for the familiar range of auroral colors, which can include greens, reds, blues and purples.

Color is not a simple safety indicator. A bright red or green display does not mean that radiation is reaching people at the surface, and a faint display does not prove that space weather is harmless to technology. Brightness and color describe the light emission, while technological effects depend on the strength and structure of the underlying geomagnetic disturbance and on the systems exposed to it.

Aurora, solar flare, CME and geomagnetic storm: what is the difference?

These terms are related, but they are not interchangeable. Keeping them separate makes the safety question much easier to understand.

Term What it means How it relates to the lights
Solar wind The ongoing flow of charged particles from the Sun. Provides the particle environment that interacts with Earth’s magnetosphere.
Solar flare A sudden burst of energy and electromagnetic radiation from the Sun. Can accompany other solar activity, but a flare is not itself an aurora.
Coronal mass ejection (CME) A large eruption of solar plasma that may travel toward Earth. A CME can trigger a geomagnetic storm when it reaches Earth and can intensify auroral activity.
Geomagnetic storm A disturbance of Earth’s magnetosphere caused by enhanced solar-wind conditions. Can expand the aurora oval toward lower latitudes and can also affect technology.
Aurora borealis The visible atmospheric light produced when energized particles excite gases. It is an effect of the particle–atmosphere interaction, not the name for every solar event that precedes it.

Can the northern lights hurt people on the ground?

For an ordinary ground observer, the visible aurora is not identified as a direct physical hazard. NASA’s explanation on solar storms states: “They do not cause direct harm to anyone on Earth, however, as our planet’s magnetic field and atmosphere protect us from the worst of these storms.” The atmosphere and magnetic field absorb or deflect the most hazardous particle and radiation effects before they reach people at the surface.

That answer concerns direct exposure from the aurora and the solar storm at ground level. It does not mean every consequence of severe space weather is harmless. The risks are different for people in space and for some high-altitude flights.

Who can face additional exposure concerns?

  • Astronauts: outside Earth’s protective atmosphere and magnetic field, astronauts can receive more radiation during significant solar-particle events.
  • High-altitude, high-latitude flights: severe space weather can increase radiation exposure concerns for aircraft crews and passengers on routes near the poles. Aviation authorities and operators assess conditions and may alter routes or procedures.

These are event-dependent concerns, not evidence that looking at the lights from a field, balcony or roadside is dangerous. For a specific active event, follow current guidance from the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, an airline, an employer or local authorities.

What can a severe aurora-producing storm disrupt?

The energetic disturbance behind an aurora can induce electrical currents and alter the near-Earth space environment. NOAA lists possible disruption or degradation involving several kinds of infrastructure:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

  • Electric grids: geomagnetically induced currents can stress transmission networks. In an extreme geomagnetic storm, high-voltage transformers can be damaged.
  • Satellites: increased radiation and atmospheric changes can interfere with satellite operations, communications or tracking.
  • Radio communications: ionospheric changes can degrade some high-frequency radio links.
  • GPS and other GNSS: disturbed ionospheric conditions can reduce positioning accuracy or interrupt service.

None of these outcomes is automatic whenever an aurora appears. Effects vary with storm strength, the orientation and duration of the disturbance, the latitude and design of infrastructure, and the safeguards used by operators. A visible display is therefore a useful sign that charged particles are interacting with the magnetosphere, but it is not a damage report.

What determines whether you can see the northern lights?

Four practical conditions have to line up: geomagnetic activity, location, darkness and sky clarity.

Geomagnetic activity and the Kp index

NOAA’s Kp index runs from 0 to 9 and indicates the level of geomagnetic activity relevant to aurora visibility. Higher values generally mean a brighter or more expanded auroral oval, allowing the display to become visible farther from the magnetic poles. Kp is a planning aid, not a guarantee. A favorable number does not overcome thick cloud, daylight or a blocked horizon, and a lower number can still produce a worthwhile display close to the auroral zone.

Latitude and horizon

Locations nearer the auroral oval have more opportunities. During a strong geomagnetic storm, the oval can expand toward lower latitudes. A broad, unobstructed view toward the pole is helpful, especially when the display is low on the horizon.

Darkness and clouds

Get away from city lights when possible and check the local cloud forecast. Even strong auroral activity can be invisible through opaque cloud or washed out by bright artificial lighting. Moonlight is not the same as cloud cover: it can reduce contrast, but a clear sky may still show a bright display.

Human vision versus a camera

Dim aurora may appear grayish or nearly invisible to the unaided eye while a camera records stronger color. NASA expert Emily Furfaro explained in a March 26, 2025 interview that smartphone cameras can be more sensitive than human vision in low light. A camera image is evidence that light reached the sensor, not a promise that the display will look equally vivid in person.

A practical, safe viewing plan

  1. Check a current forecast. Use the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center’s live aurora and alert information rather than relying on an old screenshot or a general claim that a storm is “coming.” Forecasts can change as solar-wind conditions are measured.
  2. Choose a dark, open location. Prefer a safe place away from city glare with a clear view toward the pole. Do not stop on a highway shoulder, trespass or stand near cliffs, thin ice, deep water or other hazards just to improve the view.
  3. Confirm local weather and darkness. A clear sky and sufficient darkness are essential. Allow your eyes time to adapt after leaving bright lights.
  4. Dress and plan for the site. Bring clothing and supplies appropriate for the local temperature, tell someone where you are going and account for the return journey. The relevant hazard here is ordinary outdoor safety, not the auroral light.
  5. Watch for changes without assuming a guarantee. Activity can surge, fade or shift. Keep the horizon open and look for diffuse arcs, moving curtains or rays rather than expecting a constant bright band.
  6. Use a camera carefully. A phone’s night mode or manual exposure may reveal faint structure. Stabilize the device if possible, but do not let photography distract you from traffic, uneven ground or other immediate hazards.
  7. Follow official instructions during a severe event. If authorities, an airline or an employer issues operational guidance, follow it. The purpose is to manage space-weather effects on aviation, communications or infrastructure, not to avoid the light itself.

Common misconceptions to avoid

  • “Aurora particles pass through the magnetic field and hit people below.” The relevant particles are guided into the upper atmosphere, where they collide with gases. Earth’s atmosphere and magnetic field protect people at the surface from the worst solar-storm effects.
  • “Every spectacular display means a dangerous storm.” A display can be visually impressive without causing damaging effects to local infrastructure. Risk depends on the wider event and the systems involved.
  • “A high Kp guarantees a view.” Kp describes geomagnetic activity. It does not remove cloud, daylight, light pollution or an obstructed horizon.
  • “Solar flare, CME, geomagnetic storm and aurora are synonyms.” They describe different solar events, Earth responses and visible effects in the chain.

When should you take space-weather information seriously?

Pay attention to official alerts when a major geomagnetic storm is forecast or underway, especially if you operate radio equipment, depend on precise satellite navigation, work with power infrastructure, manage satellites or are responsible for high-latitude aviation. Operators may have procedures to reduce exposure, protect equipment or verify navigation and communications by other means.

For a casual viewer on the ground, the sensible response is to check the latest forecast, choose a physically safe viewing site and remain aware of ordinary travel and weather risks. No evergreen description can establish whether a storm is happening at this moment; current conditions must come from a live space-weather service.

Bottom line

The northern lights are produced when solar-wind or CME-related particles are accelerated by Earth’s magnetic environment and collide with oxygen and nitrogen roughly 80–500 kilometers overhead. The resulting light is safe to view from the ground. Severe space weather can still disrupt power, satellites, radio and GPS, and it can create additional radiation concerns for astronauts and some high-altitude polar flights. Treat the display as a beautiful sign of a complex space-weather event, not as a harmful beam, and use current forecasts plus ordinary outdoor-safety judgment when you go looking for it.
