What Causes Strange Clouds, and How Can You Tell Them Apart?

Most “strange” clouds are familiar cloud genera, supplementary features, optical effects, or aircraft condensation trails. Their unusual appearance usually records how air is moving, cooling, mixing with moisture, or interacting with terrain and ice—not an exotic cause.

Identify one by starting with its shape, then checking altitude, nearby terrain or storms, motion, persistence, and any light effects. A photograph alone can mislead because it may hide scale, direction, height, and surrounding weather.

A reliable way to identify an unusual cloud

The World Meteorological Organization’s International Cloud Atlas is the global standard for cloud definitions, according to NOAA. You do not need to memorize every Latin name to use its logic. Begin with the broad structure, then add context.

  1. Describe the structure. Is it a wispy filament, a broad veil, a separate heap with vertical growth, a smooth lens, a rippling underside, a hole in a deck, a pouch hanging below a cloud, or a narrow line?
  2. Check the setting. Look for a thunderstorm anvil, a mountain ridge or lee slope, a thin high cloud layer, an aircraft route, or a low sun or Moon.
  3. Watch it. Does it drift with the surrounding cloud, remain nearly fixed over terrain, widen downwind, develop falling streaks, or disappear within minutes?
  4. Separate cloud from light. A ring, colored patch, or glow may be an optical effect created by cloud particles or ice crystals rather than a separate cloud type.
  5. Interpret weather cautiously. A feature can reveal turbulence, moisture, or instability without being a warning by itself. Use official forecasts and alerts for safety decisions.

Cloud names often describe a feature attached to another cloud, not a wholly separate species. The same supplementary feature can occur on more than one cloud type, so context matters as much as the outline.

Quick comparison of the formations people most often mistake for one another

What you see Most likely explanation Context that supports it What it does—and does not—tell you
Rounded pouches hanging from a cloud base Mammatus Often beneath a thunderstorm anvil, but possible on other cloud types Indicates a distinctive storm environment; the pouches themselves do not produce severe weather
Smooth almond or stacked “flying-saucer” shapes Lenticular cloud Common near or downwind of a mountain ridge; can also form where air rises over flatter terrain Shows organized rising and sinking air; not evidence of a spacecraft or automatically dangerous weather
Deep waves or a rough-sea underside Asperitas Usually a broad, dark-looking undulating base; the Met Office lists a typical base range of 4,000–10,000 feet Its exact formation remains unsettled; the feature itself does not produce rain
Thin line beginning on an aircraft route Contrail Cold air at flight level, with persistence controlled by surrounding humidity and upper-level wind May vanish, persist, widen, or crosshatch; persistence is not evidence of chemical spraying
Clean circular opening in a thin cloud sheet Hole-punch or fallstreak hole Often includes ice crystals falling through or below the gap; an aircraft can help initiate it Usually a microphysical change in supercooled droplets, not a portal or an approaching storm by itself
Pearly colors in a very high cloud Nacreous cloud Rare, very high altitude, especially noticeable around twilight The NWS glossary gives an approximate altitude of 25–30 km
Thin bluish-white waves at twilight Noctilucent cloud Most visible at twilight in polar latitudes The NWS glossary places them approximately 80–90 km up, far above ordinary tropospheric clouds
Ring, small colored circle, or bright patch near the Sun or Moon Halo, corona, or iridescence Ice crystals or tiny cloud particles interacting with light An optical effect that describes the cloud and illumination, not a separate cloud genus

Mammatus: the pouch-shaped underside

Visual clue

Mammatus consists of rounded, smooth lobes that hang downward from a cloud base. They are most famously seen beneath the projecting anvil of a cumulonimbus thunderstorm, although NOAA notes that mammatus can occur on several cloud types.

How it forms

The Met Office associates typical mammatus with turbulence in a cumulonimbus cloud and descending motion around its anvil. The pouches are therefore a sign of complicated air motion near the cloud boundary, not isolated bubbles floating independently.

Weather meaning

Mammatus can accompany severe or non-severe storms. The National Weather Service specifically cautions that mammatus does not itself produce severe weather. It is not a tornado signature and cannot replace a warning, radar information, or a local forecast. If you see it near an active storm, judge the hazard from official alerts and the storm’s location and movement.

Lenticular clouds: why some clouds look like flying saucers

Visual clue

A lenticular cloud is smooth, round or oval, and lens-shaped. The National Weather Service glossary defines it as “A very smooth, round or oval, lens-shaped cloud that is often seen, singly or stacked in groups, near or in the lee of a mountain ridge.” Several layers can appear stacked like a pile of discs.

How terrain shapes it

Air flowing over a ridge can oscillate in standing-wave patterns on the downwind side. Where a wave lifts air to saturation, a smooth cloud forms; where air sinks and dries, it dissipates. Because the wave can remain anchored while wind flows through it, the cloud may look stationary even as air constantly moves across it. NOAA also notes that lenticular clouds can form when air rises over flatter terrain, so a mountain is strong supporting evidence, not an absolute requirement.

What to infer

The saucer shape reflects organized airflow. It does not indicate an artificial object, and its presence alone does not establish dangerous weather at ground level. Pilots and aviation forecasters may care about the mountain-wave turbulence associated with the same flow, but an observer should use aviation or local weather guidance rather than the shape alone.

Asperitas: the cloud base that resembles a rough sea

Visual clue

Asperitas has a deeply undulating underside, with broad troughs and ridges that look like waves viewed from below. The pattern is more rugged and chaotic than the smooth bands of a typical lenticular cloud.

What is known about its formation

The Met Office describes the formation process as uncertain. One hypothesis links asperitas to convective storms; another proposes that mammatus descends into air in which wind direction changes with height. These are proposed mechanisms, not settled explanations. The source gives a typical cloud-base range of 4,000–10,000 feet, but that range is a description rather than an exact universal boundary.

The World Meteorological Organization accepted asperitas as a classification at its 17th Congress in 2015. The cloud type that hosts the feature had not yet been defined in the source reviewed, so it is more precise to call asperitas a supplementary feature than to claim it is always a standalone genus.

Rain and safety

Asperitas itself does not produce rain. Nearby unstable clouds or the larger weather system can still bring precipitation, gusts, or lightning. Treat the rippling appearance as a clue about the cloud environment, not as a forecast of a specific hazard.

Contrails: why one airplane line vanishes and another spreads

Visual clue

A contrail begins as a narrow line along an aircraft’s path. It may disappear quickly, remain as a sharp streak, widen into a diffuse band, or intersect other trails in a crosshatched pattern.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The condensation process

Jet exhaust contains water vapor. In the very cold air at flight altitude, that vapor condenses and freezes into a visible cloud. The National Weather Service and NOAA describe contrails as clouds made from condensed exhaust water vapor.

Why persistence differs

The surrounding atmosphere’s humidity is the key control. In drier air, a trail can evaporate soon after it forms. In a sufficiently moist layer, it can persist and expand as upper-level winds carry and shear it. Two aircraft on similar routes can therefore leave very different-looking trails if they cross different moisture layers. A persistent trail by itself is not evidence of chemical spraying; that conclusion is not supported by the condensation process described by the National Weather Service.

Contrails can reveal otherwise invisible moisture layers. Their spread also shows that wind speed and direction vary with altitude, but the trail’s width is not a reliable measure of a ground-level weather change.

Hole-punch clouds and fallstreak holes

Visual clue

A hole-punch cloud is a rounded opening in a thin, otherwise continuous cloud deck. Ice crystals may appear as streaks falling from the center or below the gap, which is why the feature is also called a fallstreak hole.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How a hole develops

The National Weather Service describes a common explanation involving supercooled liquid droplets—water that remains liquid below freezing. When some droplets freeze, ice crystals grow efficiently by drawing water vapor from nearby liquid droplets. The crystals become heavy enough to fall, leaving a circular region with fewer cloud droplets. An aircraft passing through the layer can disturb it and help initiate freezing, but not every hole requires an aircraft.

How to avoid a false identification

Look for falling ice streaks and for a thin, uniform cloud deck around the opening. A ragged break in a thicker cloud, a gap caused by terrain, or a camera exposure artifact is not necessarily a fallstreak hole.

Nacreous and noctilucent clouds: two very high phenomena

Nacreous clouds

Nacreous clouds are rare, very high clouds that can show pearly or iridescent colors, especially after sunset and before sunrise. The NWS glossary gives an approximate altitude of 25–30 km. Their unusual colors and height distinguish them from ordinary iridescence seen in lower, thin clouds.

Noctilucent clouds

Noctilucent clouds are thin, wavy, bluish-white clouds most visible during twilight in polar latitudes. The NWS glossary places them at approximately 80–90 km. They occupy a vastly higher region than tropospheric cloud genera, so a similar-looking photograph should not be classified from color alone; time of day, latitude, and viewing direction matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Halos, coronas, and iridescence are light effects

Halo

A halo is a large ring around the Sun or Moon, commonly associated with refraction through ice crystals in cirrostratus. The ring is produced by the geometry of the crystals and the incoming light.

Corona

A corona is usually a smaller colored ring. It results from diffraction by cloud particles and is often visible when a thin altocumulus patch crosses the Sun or Moon.

Iridescence

Iridescent patches are localized rainbow-like colors near the Sun in thin cloud. They can be striking, but the colors describe how light interacts with the particles, not a new cloud category. Never stare at the Sun while trying to observe one; use safe indirect viewing.

Common identification mistakes and better checks

  • Naming from a single shape. A smooth oval could be lenticular, but without terrain, scale, and motion the identification is only “likely.”
  • Calling every pouch mammatus. Confirm that the lobes hang from a cloud base and inspect the surrounding storm or layer.
  • Treating asperitas as a settled process. Its appearance is well described; its mechanism remains a set of hypotheses.
  • Reading danger into appearance. Mammatus does not predict a tornado, and asperitas does not itself produce rain. Check official warnings.
  • Assuming every line is a contrail. A linear cloud can also be a natural band or a perspective effect. An aircraft path and the trail’s evolution are useful supporting evidence.
  • Confusing light with cloud structure. A halo or corona should be recorded as an optical effect associated with a cloud layer.
  • Ignoring time. A photograph freezes the process. Watching for several minutes often reveals whether a feature is anchored, drifting, spreading, or falling apart.

How to use a cloud observation safely

Clouds are valuable environmental clues: they can show moisture layers, terrain-induced waves, ice processes, or nearby convection. They are not a substitute for an official forecast. For lightning, tornadoes, damaging wind, aviation turbulence, or rapidly worsening conditions, consult your local meteorological service and follow issued alerts. Record the time, direction, approximate elevation angle, nearby terrain, and whether the feature changes; those details make a later identification far more reliable than a striking shape alone.
