Shader stutter is usually a timing problem: a game needs a graphics shader or complete pipeline configuration for the first time, but that work has not been prepared for your current device. The game or graphics driver compiles or assembles it while a frame is due, so one frame takes far longer than the surrounding frames. The result is a brief hitch when you enter a new area, see an effect, or trigger a previously unseen material.
Clearing a shader cache can help only when its stored data is stale, incompatible, or unusable after a driver, GPU, or game change. It is not a universal stutter cure. Deleting valid cached data removes work that could have been reused, so the next launch or first encounter may take longer while the cache is rebuilt.

What shader stutter actually is
A shader is a small program that tells the graphics system how to calculate an image: how a surface responds to light, how a particle is blended, how a shadow is filtered, or how a post-processing effect is applied. Modern games do not ship with one shader for every situation. They use many variants, selected by material features, lighting choices, quality settings, render targets, and hardware capabilities.

When a required variant is not ready for the current run, the game has two broad choices. It can prepare the work before rendering needs it, or it can compile and configure it just in time. The second approach is where the visible hitch comes from. Microsoft’s Direct3D documentation says that compiling shaders on the player’s device at launch or just in time during gameplay causes longer load times and in-game shader-compilation stutter.

The hitch is a frame-time spike, not necessarily a sustained performance problem. Once the required code and pipeline state are prepared and stored, later frames using the same combination can render normally. That is why a game may stutter the first time an effect appears and then run smoothly when the effect is shown again.
Why first-use compilation can stop a frame
Shader variants multiply quickly
A single visual effect can depend on many switches: normal maps, skin or foliage features, shadow method, fog, reflections, transparency, anti-aliasing, HDR output, and quality level. Each combination can produce a different shader variant. A game that tried to compile every possible combination during installation would spend more time preparing unused permutations and would need to predict every setting a player might select.
The pipeline is more than an isolated shader
In Direct3D 12, the prepared object is often a pipeline state object, or PSO. A PSO packages shader bytecode with other rendering settings, such as the arrangement of vertex data, blending, rasterization, and render-target formats. Microsoft describes PSOs as objects commonly created during initialization so dependent settings can be preprocessed and switched efficiently while rendering.

Consequently, a first-use hitch may involve creating a complete pipeline configuration rather than compiling one small program. The game may also need to validate that the configuration is suitable for the installed GPU and driver. A fast graphics card cannot eliminate this CPU-side preparation if it is scheduled on the critical path of a frame.
Just-in-time work competes with the game
Compilation and PSO creation consume CPU time, memory, and sometimes driver resources. If the work happens while the game is streaming a level, submitting draw calls, or loading assets, several tasks compete at once. The renderer may miss its frame deadline, producing a visible pause even though average frame rate is high.
What a shader cache stores
A cache preserves compiled or prepared results so a later run can reuse them instead of repeating the same work. The exact owner and format vary. A game may maintain its own PSO library, the operating system may provide a shader cache, and the graphics driver may retain hardware-specific compiled state. These layers can coexist, and clearing one does not necessarily clear the others.

| Cache or store | What it may contain | Best reason to keep it | Compatibility concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Game-managed cache | Compiled shaders, PSO records, or a library generated for that title | Lets the game reuse preparation between launches and level loads | May be tied to the game version, graphics settings, or its own content format |
| Direct3D 12 application or disk cache | Cached pipeline-state data supplied or requested by the application | Disk storage is intended to accelerate future runs; Microsoft says compilation using cached data should be faster than compilation without it | Data is specific to the hardware, driver, and machine |
| Operating-system or driver-managed cache | Driver-specific compiled results and other reusable graphics state | Can avoid repeating work across launches or applications when the driver supports it | Controls and invalidation rules depend on the operating system and driver vendor |
Because these stores are implementation-specific, there is no single cache folder or deletion command that is correct for every game, graphics API, operating system, and GPU. A title’s in-game “clear shader cache” command is different from an operating-system or driver cache control.
When clearing the cache can help
After a driver or GPU change
Cached pipeline data is not universally portable. Microsoft documents driver-version mismatch and adapter-not-found errors as possible outcomes when cached PSO data was produced with a different driver or another GPU. Installing a new driver, replacing a graphics card, changing an adapter, or restoring a system image can therefore leave old records that cannot be used safely.
When a game has changed its rendering data
A major game patch can alter shader bytecode, pipeline formats, or the list of supported variants. If the game fails to invalidate its old records correctly, it may repeatedly reject them, rebuild them, or encounter errors. Clearing the game’s own cache can remove that mismatch and force records to be generated from the new content.

When the stored data is suspected to be damaged
Repeated compilation failures, errors that mention a cached pipeline, or a stutter pattern that began immediately after an interrupted update are reasonable reasons to test a cache reset. The evidence does not establish that every stutter is caused by corruption, so treat clearing as a targeted diagnostic rather than routine maintenance.
Why deleting the cache can make stutter worse temporarily
The cache exists to preserve work. Removing it discards valid compiled results as well as any invalid ones. On the next launch, the game or driver must prepare those results again. You may see a longer first launch, a “building shaders” step, or renewed hitches the first time you visit familiar areas. This consequence follows from the documented purpose of disk caching and is not a guarantee that every title will show the same behavior.

A game might compile only the variants encountered during play, so the first trip through a new map can still hitch even after the initial launch appears normal. If the cache is recreated successfully, subsequent runs should have more reusable data than the immediately post-clear run.
Best Value
Clearing versus leaving the cache alone
| Situation | Likely interpretation | Practical choice | Expected trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stutter appears only the first time an effect or area is shown, then fades | Normal first-use preparation is plausible | Leave the cache intact and allow the game to encounter content once | One-time hitches may remain; deleting data would restart the process |
| Stutter began after a driver, adapter, or major game update | Old records may no longer match the environment | Use the game’s documented reset option or the exact official cache procedure for your platform | Expect rebuilding time and possible first-use hitches |
| Errors identify an invalid, missing, or incompatible cached pipeline | The cache may be unusable | Reset the affected cache after closing the game, following vendor instructions | Previously prepared data must be generated again |
| Stutter occurs everywhere, including menus, or persists after repeated runs | A broader CPU, streaming, shader scheduling, or frame-pacing issue may be involved | Investigate settings, background load, storage, and game patches rather than repeatedly deleting caches | Cache deletion alone is unlikely to address the underlying cause |
A safe troubleshooting workflow
- Record the pattern. Note whether the hitch occurs at startup, when entering a new area, when an effect first appears, or on every frame. A first-encounter-only pattern points toward preparation; constant hitching does not prove a shader cause.
- Check what changed. Identify recent game patches, driver updates, graphics-card changes, operating-system updates, restored backups, or altered graphics settings. Compatibility changes make a reset more defensible.
- Identify the cache owner. Look first for an in-game graphics or troubleshooting option. If none exists, consult the current official instructions for the exact operating system, GPU vendor, driver, and game. Do not assume a Direct3D 12 cache path applies to a Vulkan or another graphics-API title.
- Close the game completely. A cache file that is open or being written can be recreated incorrectly if deleted during play. Exit to the desktop and confirm that the game and launcher have finished updating.
- Reset only the documented cache. Prefer a game-provided command or the vendor’s current procedure. Avoid deleting unrelated folders, save data, configuration files, or every graphics cache at once; that makes it harder to identify what changed.
- Allow the rebuild to finish. Start the game, wait through any shader-preparation phase, and play long enough to revisit the scene that previously stuttered. The first run is not a fair comparison with a warmed cache.
- Compare several launches. If the hitch diminishes after the cache is rebuilt, stale data was a plausible contributor. If it returns identically every session, the game may be compiling on demand by design, or another bottleneck may be responsible.
- Stop repeating resets. Clearing the same cache after every launch guarantees repeated preparation and can make the experience less consistent. Keep the rebuilt data unless a new compatibility change or documented error justifies another reset.
What developers and platforms do to reduce shader hitches
Precompilation before delivery
Microsoft’s Advanced Shader Delivery is a Windows 11 Direct3D 12 feature intended to reduce on-device compilation for supported games. It requires compatible operating-system, GPU, driver, and storefront integration support. It is not a universal switch that every player can enable, and its availability depends on the game and platform.
Disk-cached PSO libraries
A game can create PSOs during initialization and store reusable data on disk. This shifts work toward loading and allows later runs to avoid repeated preparation. The cost is a larger preparation phase and the need to invalidate data when the hardware, driver, game version, or pipeline format changes.
Fallback or “uber” shaders
Microsoft’s Direct3D 12 sample describes using a general-purpose uber shader while a more specialized PSO compiles. This approach keeps rendering moving instead of blocking on every specialized variant, but the sample notes that GPU performance can be somewhat lower temporarily. It is an engineering technique, not an end-user cache setting.
How to tell shader stutter from other stutter
No single symptom proves that shaders are responsible. Use the timing and evidence together:
- Likely shader or PSO preparation: a hitch occurs once when a new material, effect, or area appears; later encounters are smoother; the game may show a shader-building message.
- Possible asset streaming: the hitch coincides with entering a new zone and disk activity, regardless of which visual effect is on screen.
- Possible CPU or simulation load: stutter follows crowds, physics, or script-heavy scenes and remains after the same shaders have already been used.
- Possible frame-pacing or display issue: regular cadence problems occur even in static scenes or menus, with no clear first-use trigger.
- Possible memory pressure: hitching worsens after long sessions, resolution or texture changes, or multitasking, rather than after a particular effect.
These categories can overlap. A new area may stream textures, create PSOs, and run extra simulation at the same time. Clearing a shader cache cannot repair a storage bottleneck, a CPU limit, or an incorrect frame-pacing configuration.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- Shader stutter commonly occurs when compilation or pipeline preparation is scheduled at the moment a frame needs the result.
- A Direct3D 12 PSO can include shader bytecode and many other pipeline settings, so “shader compilation” may describe a larger preparation task.
- Cached results can make later compilation faster and avoid repeated work, but they are tied to the machine, hardware, driver, and application assumptions.
- Clearing is most defensible after a compatibility change or a documented cache error, not as an automatic response to every hitch.
- After a reset, expect the possibility of longer preparation and renewed first-use stutter while the cache is rebuilt.
- Exact deletion steps are platform- and vendor-specific; use the current instructions for the particular game, graphics API, operating system, and GPU.
