Satellite latency has a physical floor: your data must travel up to a satellite, through the provider’s network, and back to the destination. Orbit determines how large that unavoidable delay is. Geostationary (GEO) systems generally add more propagation delay than low-Earth-orbit (LEO) systems, while routing, congestion, Wi‑Fi interference, and bufferbloat can add delay or jitter on top. You can reduce the avoidable portions, but no household setting can eliminate the satellite link’s propagation time.
The practical approach is to measure the same destination repeatedly, compare Wi‑Fi with Ethernet, check the provider’s diagnostics, and judge service options using dated, location-specific figures rather than a single advertised ping.

What latency means on a satellite connection
Latency is the time between sending data and receiving a response. Consumer and provider reports commonly describe it as a round trip. For example, Starlink defines its figure as the time for a packet to travel from its router to the internet and for the response to return. That is different from measuring only the radio trip between a dish and a satellite.
A result also depends on the endpoint. A test to a nearby provider gateway can be much faster than a test to a distant application server. The latter includes the provider’s backhaul, internet peering, and the destination network. Therefore, two tests taken seconds apart can be measuring different paths even when your dish and home network have not changed.

When someone asks, “Why is my satellite internet lagging?” the useful question is which segment is adding the delay: the space link, the provider’s network, the wider internet path, or the local network in the home.
Orbit creates the fundamental delay trade-off
Signals cannot move faster than the speed of light, so distance matters. A satellite in GEO sits far above Earth and can see a broad area, but a packet must travel a much longer path up and down. A satellite in LEO is much closer, reducing the satellite-to-ground portion of the trip, although a LEO constellation needs many more satellites to provide continuous worldwide coverage.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office summarizes the scale of the difference this way: “It can take a signal transmitted from a satellite in GEO approximately 20 times longer to reach the earth than from a satellite in LEO.” Read that as a comparison of the signal’s reach to Earth, not as a promise that a complete internet ping will be exactly 20 times slower. The full path includes additional links and routing. GAO report
| Orbit class | Latency implication | System trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| GEO | A signal transmitted from GEO can take approximately 20 times longer to reach Earth than from LEO. | Wide field of view; the longer distance increases propagation delay. |
| MEO | Closer to Earth than GEO, so its satellite-to-ground path is generally shorter. | Closer-orbit systems need more satellites than GEO for broad coverage. |
| LEO | Shorter satellite-to-ground path than GEO and generally lower space-link delay. | Worldwide coverage requires a large constellation and coordinated handoffs. |
Orbit is therefore the first service-selection question. A low advertised number from a LEO provider does not mean every application will see that number, and a GEO service may still be the available option at a particular address. Availability, gateway location, and the route to the application remain decisive.
Where the rest of the latency comes from
Provider routing and network load
After the signal reaches the satellite system, it still travels through ground stations, provider routers, peering links, and the public internet. Providers may change routes, gateways, or capacity over time. Peak-hour demand can also alter queueing and the path selected for your traffic. A provider’s published latency is consequently a dated measurement of a particular network and geography, not a permanent property of the orbit.

Wi‑Fi interference and bufferbloat
Your home network can add delay even when the satellite portion is operating normally. The FCC identifies avoidable Wi‑Fi interference and bufferbloat—large queues that form when a connection is busy—as causes of latency or jitter that local router and Wi‑Fi improvements can address. The available evidence does not establish one universal number of milliseconds that every household will recover. FCC document

Interference can come from distance, walls, competing networks, or crowded radio channels. Bufferbloat is most visible when another device is uploading or downloading heavily. These effects often appear as spikes rather than a consistently high baseline.
Weather, obstructions, and outages
Rain, snow, physical obstructions, or a provider outage can make a service unstable. They may produce packet loss, retries, or changing routes, which users experience as lag or jitter. The available provider-neutral evidence does not quantify a standard latency penalty for these conditions across services, so treat them as diagnostic possibilities rather than fixed numbers. Check the provider’s own outage and link-health indicators for your location.
How to measure your own latency accurately
A single ping is not enough to identify a pattern. Use the same computer, destination, and connection type for repeated measurements, and record the time and conditions.

- Choose a repeatable endpoint. Use a nearby provider gateway or another stable host that responds to ping. For application troubleshooting, also test the application’s own server or region when the service identifies one. Do not compare a nearby gateway result with a distant website result as if they were equivalent.
- Run a series, not one packet. On Windows, run
ping -n 20 example.com. On macOS or Linux, runping -c 20 example.com, replacing the example host with your chosen endpoint. Save the minimum, typical, maximum, and any packet loss shown by the command. - Repeat at different times. Test during a quiet period and during the hours when your household normally uses the connection. Record the date, time, weather conditions if relevant, and whether another device was transferring data.
- Compare Wi‑Fi and Ethernet. Connect the same computer directly to the router with a Cat 6 Ethernet cable, provided the router and computer have compatible ports or you have the required adapter. Run the identical test again. A wired comparison isolates the local Wi‑Fi segment; it cannot change satellite propagation or provider routing.
- Check the provider’s diagnostics. Look for link interruptions, obstruction warnings, gateway changes, or outage notices in the provider’s app or customer portal. Match those events with your timestamps.
- Keep the results for support. If wired tests remain high or show loss, send the provider repeated results with endpoint, timestamps, connection type, and any diagnostic events. This is more useful than reporting that one game or website felt slow.
Ways to reduce avoidable satellite-internet latency
Use Ethernet to remove Wi‑Fi uncertainty
For gaming, video calls, or any latency-sensitive test, begin with a wired connection. If the wired baseline is consistently lower or has fewer spikes, improve the wireless portion rather than replacing satellite equipment. Move the router to a more central, open position, reduce obstructions, and select a less congested Wi‑Fi channel when your router supports that choice. These steps address the local radio link only.
Control bufferbloat during busy transfers
Repeat the same latency test while another device uploads or downloads. A sharp increase under load points to queueing in the home network or upstream equipment. Pause large transfers during interactive use, schedule backups outside busy periods, or use a router’s traffic-management feature if it exposes a well-documented queue-management setting. Do not assume that buying a faster Wi‑Fi standard alone removes queues; the measurement under load is what identifies the problem.
Separate local fixes from satellite limits
If Wi‑Fi and Ethernet produce nearly identical results to the same endpoint, the remaining delay is more likely in the satellite link, provider network, or destination path. A cable, new access point, or gaming router cannot shorten the physical route to orbit. Likewise, changing DNS may alter name lookup time without lowering the established connection’s round-trip latency.
Treat VPNs and equipment replacement as conditional
A VPN can sometimes select a different route, but it can also add an encryption hop and make latency worse. Dish replacement, alignment work, or a new modem is justified when the provider’s diagnostics identify a hardware or link fault, not as a universal response to a high ping. Compare before-and-after measurements to the same endpoint before deciding whether a change helped.
How to interpret published latency figures
Published numbers need a date, geography, statistic, and scope. Starlink’s public specification page lists 25–60 ms latency on land and 100+ ms in certain remote locations. The retrieved page does not state a publication date, and the figures are provider specifications rather than an independent, universal measurement. Starlink specifications

| Figure | What it actually describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 25.7 ms | Starlink-reported median peak-hour latency across U.S. customers, June 2025. | A guaranteed ping for every customer, location, time, or application. |

When comparing services, ask whether a number is a median, average, percentile, or range; whether it was measured at peak hours; which country or gateway was included; and whether the endpoint was a provider router or a distant application. Unlike-for-like figures are required before ranking providers.

Evaluate each genuine option on the following points:
- Orbit and propagation class: GEO generally carries more inherent delay than LEO; MEO and LEO reduce the satellite-to-ground distance but require more satellites.
- Exact-location availability: Confirm that the service can be installed at your address and identify any remote-area qualification.
- Dated latency evidence: Prefer measurements that state geography, time period, statistic, and whether they were taken at peak hours.
- Variability and outages: Look for interruption records or provider diagnostics, not just a best-case ping.
- Routing and destination: Ask where traffic enters the internet and test the servers your household actually uses.
- Price, data policy, and equipment: Include recurring charges, data limits or prioritization, installation requirements, and whether your router supports Ethernet testing.
The GAO’s orbit comparison and the provider figures above establish why propagation differs, but they do not form a complete, comparable multi-provider benchmark. Avoid declaring a universal winner from unlike or undated numbers. GAO report
Why your satellite internet may still feel laggy after troubleshooting
Every test is high, wired and wireless
This pattern suggests that the dominant delay is outside the Wi‑Fi link: satellite propagation, provider routing, congestion, or the destination path. Keep timestamped results and ask the provider to review the connection and gateway for those periods.
Only Wi‑Fi is high or erratic
Focus on signal strength, interference, router placement, and channel use. Retest near the router and over Ethernet. If the wired result is stable, the satellite service is not the first component to replace.

Latency rises only while the connection is busy
That symptom is consistent with bufferbloat or another queueing problem. Identify which upload or download triggers the rise, then reduce simultaneous transfers or configure supported traffic management.
Latency changes with the destination
Different destinations use different routes and servers. Compare each destination over multiple runs rather than averaging unlike endpoints into one number. A distant application can be slow even when the provider gateway is responding normally.
Short interruptions accompany the spikes
Check provider diagnostics for obstructions, weather-related link events, or outages and include those timestamps in a support request. The available evidence does not support assigning a standard millisecond penalty to any one of these conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat you can and cannot reduce
You can often reduce Wi‑Fi interference, home-network queueing, and avoidable routing choices. You can also choose a service whose orbit and network better match your location and applications. You cannot tune a router, cable, VPN, or DNS setting to remove the propagation time imposed by a satellite’s distance from Earth. The most reliable improvement plan is therefore measurement first, local-network cleanup second, and a provider or service change only when repeated wired evidence shows that the remaining problem lies beyond your home.
