What Causes a Diesel Engine to Seize After Years of Inactivity?

A diesel engine that will not turn after years in storage may have corroded internal parts because its protective oil film drained away. It may instead be hydraulically locked by water or another liquid in a cylinder, or blocked by damaged components. Those problems can feel similar, so a no-turn symptom alone does not identify the cause. Do not use the starter to force the engine; check it safely by hand and follow the procedure for the exact engine.

Why can a diesel seize after sitting for years?

Oil drains away and corrosion develops

During prolonged inactivity, oil can run off cylinder walls, piston rings, bearings, the crankshaft and other lubricated surfaces. A U.S. Army return-to-service procedure warns that this loss of lubrication can allow corrosion to start, especially in high humidity. Corrosion or resulting binding may prevent a piston or another component from moving freely. U.S. Army return-to-service procedure

Liquid in a cylinder causes hydraulic lock

Water or another liquid inside a cylinder can physically stop the piston from moving, creating a hydraulic lock that may be mistaken for a seized engine. Water may enter through an uncovered exhaust opening or through damage such as a leaking head gasket or cracked head or block. Service-manual search result on water in a cylinder

Damaged parts can block rotation

Broken rings or other internal damage can also keep an engine from turning. A service-manual search result lists these possibilities, but it is not a complete diagnostic procedure. Allis-Chalmers service-manual search result

How to check a stored engine before starting it

  1. Identify the engine. Find its exact model and consult its service manual. Storage and restart procedures differ between engine families.

  2. Inspect openings and covers. Look for signs of water or debris entering through the intake, exhaust or other openings. Detroit Diesel’s Series 60 storage instructions specifically caution users not to overlook the exhaust outlet when removing storage covers. Detroit Diesel Series 60 procedure

  3. Turn it by hand before applying starter power. Follow the engine manual’s prescribed method and direction. The Army procedure calls for hand rotation to check for hydraulic lock or excessive resistance before starting. If the engine does not turn normally, stop; do not force it with the starter. 4. Follow the model-specific lubrication and service steps. The Army procedure includes oil and filter changes, checks of belts and fuel filters, hand rotation, oiling valve gear, fuel priming and pressure lubrication to reduce dry-start damage. Detroit Diesel’s Series 60 instructions call for the correct oil level and pressure lubrication of bearings and rocker shafts, along with preparation of the cooling system, battery, air cleaner and turbocharger. 6. Get an inspection if it remains locked or shows signs of damage. Liquid in a cylinder, contaminated oil, visible corrosion or mechanical damage warrants inspection by a diesel technician before any start attempt.

What a no-turn symptom can—and cannot—tell you

An engine that will not rotate may be corroded, hydraulically locked or obstructed by mechanical damage. The symptom does not distinguish among them. The cause in a particular engine cannot be established without its model information and an inspection; the right next step is to stop forcing it and use the maker’s diagnostic and return-to-service procedure.
