Sony describes Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, as a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in a race for survival during a horrifying night. The Associated Press reports that he takes another snowy-night delivery job and heads toward Raccoon City. His civilian job and lack of preparation make him the audience’s point of view on the crisis, rather than a trained responder arriving with a plan.

That vulnerability is part of the setup. As the Associated Press review quotes Bryan: “I only use guns in video games,” he says. “It’s confusing in real life!” The line captures the gap between familiar game action and the danger faced by an inexperienced person in the film.
Is the new Resident Evil movie a remake of Resident Evil 2?
No. Cregger says the film takes place in the world of Resident Evil 2, amid trouble in Raccoon City, but follows a different person on a separate mission rather than retelling the game’s story. In the PlayStation Blog interview, he said: “So the world of [Resident Evil] 2 is kind of where this takes place, even though I’d make a couple of little shifts for dramatic license.”
The useful distinction is shared setting, different story: the game provides context for the location and survival-horror approach, while Bryan is the film’s original protagonist. Cregger’s mention of dramatic shifts is also a reason not to assume the movie precisely synchronizes with every game event or date.
How does survival horror shape the outbreak story?
Cregger says he wanted to bring deliberate movement and resource conservation from the games into the film: “I really like the survival horror mechanics of moving slow and with deliberation. That was something that was really important to me to bring into the movie.” Reporting describes Bryan checking ammunition and struggling with weapons as an untrained civilian. The result is an outbreak experienced as a problem of vulnerability and limited resources, not simply as a backdrop for an action hero.
