Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have three different jobs in sodium-ion electrodes: they can form an electronically conductive network, provide a porous and mechanically connected scaffold for another active material, or store sodium themselves when engineered as hard-carbon nanofibers. Some electrodes combine two or all three roles.
That distinction matters because “carbon nanofiber” is a family of structures, not a single electrode recipe. Hard carbon, heteroatom-doped fibers, activated porous fibers, and CNF composites with carbon nanotubes, graphene, or metal compounds can have very different storage mechanisms and test results.

Why the CNF label is not enough
A sodium-ion electrode is defined by more than the presence of fibrous carbon. To understand what a CNF is doing, identify whether it is the sodium-storage host or an inactive support, how its pores and surface were engineered, whether it is doped or combined with another carbon, and whether a binder is present.

Role 1: building a conductive network
Why one-dimensional fibers help
CNFs provide elongated, electrically conductive pathways. When mixed through a poorly conducting active material, the fibers can connect particles to the current collector and reduce the number of isolated regions that electrons must cross. Their length-to-diameter ratio allows a relatively small amount of carbon to create a connected network, although the useful amount depends on dispersion and electrode density.
The 2017 review by Li and co-authors describes CNFs as conductive additives and porous substrates for lithium- and sodium-ion electrodes. In that role, the fiber is not necessarily the main sodium host. It is an infrastructure material that can improve contact between the active phase and the current collector.
What “better transport” means
A CNF network may shorten electronic pathways and create additional interfaces through which sodium ions can reach active particles. If the supported material expands, contracts, or develops cracks during cycling, a mechanically connected fiber network can help preserve electrical contact. These are design mechanisms, not guaranteed gains for every CNF composite: poor wetting, agglomeration, excessive carbon content, or an unsuitable pore structure can erase the benefit.

Trade-offs in additive use
- Conductivity versus active-material fraction: CNF occupies mass and volume that could otherwise hold sodium-active material.
- Connectivity versus packing density: A highly porous network may transport ions well but reduce volumetric energy density.
- Mechanical support versus processing complexity: Fibers must be dispersed and anchored well enough to avoid clumps or weak interfaces.
- Surface area versus irreversible reactions: More exposed carbon can increase electrolyte contact and first-cycle sodium consumption.
Consequently, a statement that CNFs “improve conductivity” describes their intended function, not a universal percentage improvement.

Role 2: acting as a porous and mechanical scaffold
Supporting non-carbon active materials
CNFs can be used as a three-dimensional or interwoven substrate for materials that store sodium but have poor conductivity or suffer structural damage. The fibers provide attachment points and continuous electron pathways while leaving channels for electrolyte penetration. A porous scaffold can also distribute stress across many junctions instead of concentrating it at a single particle contact.
This architecture is useful when the active compound undergoes large volume changes, dissolves partially, or has intrinsically slow charge transfer. The CNF does not eliminate those problems; it can make the resulting composite more tolerant of them. The actual outcome depends on fiber diameter, porosity, surface chemistry, active-material loading, and how completely the active phase covers the scaffold.
Scaffold, additive, and active host can coexist
An electrode may contain CNFs that conduct and support another phase while also contributing some sodium storage. Treating the carbon as entirely “inactive” can therefore misstate capacity calculations, while treating every CNF as the main active material can overstate its contribution. A sound report identifies the mass basis and assigns capacity to the complete electrode or to a named component.
Role 3: storing sodium as an active anode
From ordinary fibers to hard-carbon nanofibers
Engineered CNFs can be active negative-electrode materials. Hard carbon has a disordered structure with regions that can host sodium at defects, between carbon layers, and in nanoscale pores. Converting a precursor into a hard-carbon nanofiber changes its diameter, surface, pore distribution, and degree of graphitic ordering; those features determine how sodium is stored.

The 2017 review records direct sodium-storage activity for CNFs when template or activation methods create suitable storage sites. This is different from adding a conventional conductive carbon to an otherwise active electrode: the fiber itself is being evaluated as an anode.
The 2025 hard-carbon nanofiber interpretation
Silva and co-authors reported additive- and binder-free hard-carbon nanofibers for sodium-ion batteries in Nano Energy in 2025. Using operando Raman spectroscopy, galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), and ex-situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, they interpreted sodium storage in their material as a multistage process involving adsorption, intercalation, and pore filling.
That sequence belongs to the reported hard-carbon nanofiber material; it should not be presented as a universal mechanism for every CNF. The authors’ abstract reports 363 mAh g−1 reversible capacity and 78% initial Coulombic efficiency for the HC14 nanofiber electrode. Their comparison HC14 ink electrode delivered 98 mAh g−1 and 36% initial Coulombic efficiency. These values are tied to the authors’ electrode preparation and testing protocol, and they are not a head-to-head ranking against every other hard-carbon or CNF design.
Why binder-free construction is significant
In a binder-free electrode, the active fiber network itself provides mechanical cohesion and electrical connection to the current collector. Removing polymer binder and some conductive additive can increase the fraction of electrochemically useful material and eliminate interfaces that add resistance. It also makes the architecture more dependent on fiber adhesion, handling strength, wetting, and current-collector contact. Binder-free does not automatically mean higher practical energy density or easier manufacturing.

Role 4: forming hybrid carbon and composite architectures
Combining CNFs with nanotubes
A 2020 study used bacterial-cellulose-derived, N,O-doped hard-carbon CNFs together with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in the negative electrode of a sodium-ion hybrid capacitor. The authors attributed improved kinetics to the CNT combination and heteroatom doping, which they said increased active sites and reduced charge-transfer resistance. In this design, the CNFs supplied sodium-storage carbon while the CNTs reinforced conductive and structural connections.
Combining CNFs with graphene and MoS2
A 2019 Nature Communications paper described a conductive carbon-nanofiber-interpenetrated graphene architecture. Its MoS2@CNFIG hybrid was used as a binder-free anode. This is evidence for a CNF-containing composite architecture, not proof that CNFs alone account for the anode’s sodium storage. MoS2, graphene, fiber connectivity, pore structure, and the binder-free assembly all contribute to the device behavior.
Why hybrid labels need a component-by-component reading
In a hybrid electrode, a high capacity or long cycle life cannot be assigned to CNF without a control experiment that isolates the fiber’s contribution. Useful comparisons include the same active compound without CNF, the same CNF without the active compound, and versions with comparable loading and electrode thickness. Without those controls, “CNF-based” identifies an architecture rather than a single cause.
What published performance numbers actually describe
CNF papers often use different cell types and metrics. The following figures are therefore examples of particular experiments, not specifications for a generic sodium-ion battery electrode.
Best Value
| Source and material | Reported figure | Test context and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xu, Liu, Zhang, Tao, Shen, and Zhang, RSC Advances (2020) | 59.2 Wh kg−1 at 276 W kg−1 | Sodium-ion hybrid capacitor using bacterial-cellulose-derived CNF electrodes; not a conventional sodium-ion battery specification. |
| Same 2020 hybrid-capacitor study | 38.7 Wh kg−1 at 5,500 W kg−1 | High-power condition for that particular device and electrode design. |
| Same 2020 hybrid-capacitor study | 48.6% capacity retention after 5,000 cycles | Measured at 0.5 A g−1 over a 1.5–4.0 V window; the percentage is not an unqualified long-life claim. |
| Silva et al., Nano Energy (2025), HC14 hard-carbon nanofiber electrode | 363 mAh g−1 reversible capacity; 78% initial Coulombic efficiency | Article-specific sodium-ion battery electrode and protocol; reported for an additive- and binder-free CNF material. |
| Silva et al., HC14 ink comparison | 98 mAh g−1 reversible capacity; 36% initial Coulombic efficiency | Comparison reported in the same abstract; protocols must be checked before comparing beyond that study. |
The 2020 paper’s authors summarized their device by writing: “In summary, a hybrid dual carbon sodium ion capacitor was assembled by bacterial cellulose derived carbon nanofibers as both the anode and the cathode.” The statement applies to that hybrid capacitor, not to sodium-ion batteries in general.
How to evaluate a CNF electrode claim
- Identify the job of the fiber. Is it the sodium-storage host, a conductive additive, a porous scaffold, or several of these?
- Name the carbon structure. Check whether the material is hard carbon, doped carbon, activated porous carbon, graphitized fiber, or a CNF/CNT, CNF/graphene, or CNF/metal-compound composite.
- Check the electrode construction. Record binder use, conductive additives, current collector, fiber loading, active-material loading, thickness, and areal mass.
- Separate half-cell and full-device data. A half-cell capacity and a hybrid-capacitor energy density answer different questions.
- Read the test conditions beside every number. Note electrolyte, voltage range, current or C-rate, temperature if given, cycle count, and whether capacity is normalized to active material or the whole electrode.
- Look for controls. A comparison with an ink electrode, a non-doped fiber, or a composite without CNF helps establish what the fiber changes.
- Ask what is still unknown. Laboratory results do not establish commercial-scale manufacturing, cost, pack-level performance, or long-term safety.
Common mistakes when describing CNFs
- Calling every CNF an inert additive: hard-carbon nanofibers can be the active anode.
- Calling every CNF an anode: many studies use fibers mainly to conduct or support another active phase.
- Generalizing a composite result: performance from a MoS2-graphene-CNF anode cannot be assigned to CNF alone.
- Comparing unlike metrics: Wh kg−1 from a hybrid capacitor is not interchangeable with mAh g−1 from a battery half-cell.
- Dropping the conditions: voltage window, current, loading, and cycle count are part of the result.
- Assuming porous means better: additional surface and pore volume can increase reaction sites but also increase irreversible sodium consumption and lower packing density.
What the evidence does not establish
The cited literature demonstrates research architectures and laboratory measurements, not a universal commercial CNF formulation. It does not establish a single market-ready fiber, manufacturing route at scale, comparative cost, or pack-level sodium-ion battery performance. Those questions require process, supply-chain, full-cell, safety, and economic data beyond the electrode studies described here.
Bottom line
Carbon nanofibers are best understood as an electrode-design platform. They can wire together an active material, hold it in a porous mechanically connected framework, store sodium as engineered hard carbon, or perform several of those functions in one composite. The only reliable way to interpret a claimed benefit is to name the specific CNF structure, the rest of the electrode architecture, and the exact test conditions that produced it.
