Carbon mineralization converts carbon dioxide into solid carbonate minerals. In the underground approach developed by Carbfix, CO₂ is dissolved in water and injected into reactive basalt. Water–rock reactions release calcium, magnesium and iron; these elements combine with the dissolved carbon and form stable carbonate minerals in the rock.
The same chemistry can be engineered to make concrete, aggregates and other products. Marine enhanced rock weathering follows a different route: reactive rock such as olivine is added to coastal waters so weathering removes CO₂ and can reduce acidity. Those pathways have different sites, infrastructure, monitoring duties and evidence standards.

What carbon mineralization is
The U.S. Department of Energy defines carbon mineralization as the process in which CO₂ precipitates into carbonate minerals when it encounters calcium- or magnesium-rich silicate minerals, other suitable mineral reactants, or enzyme catalysis with the necessary cations. In plain language, carbon that began as a gas becomes part of a solid mineral structure.

Natural systems already perform this reaction. Rainwater absorbs CO₂, reacts with rocks, carries dissolved ions and eventually deposits carbonate minerals. Carbon-removal projects accelerate or control parts of that cycle. The source of the alkaline material may be basalt, ultramafic rock, a brine or an alkaline industrial residue.

“Turned to stone” is an accessible description, not a claim that every atom immediately becomes a visible lump of rock. The carbon is incorporated into minerals such as calcite, dolomite or magnesite, often filling pores and fractures at depth or becoming part of a manufactured aggregate.
How CO₂ becomes a carbonate mineral
1. Dissolving the gas
CO₂ is first brought into contact with water. Under pressure, more gas dissolves. A portion reacts with water to form carbonic acid, bicarbonate and carbonate ions. The exact balance depends on pressure, temperature, pH and the chemistry of the water.
2. Releasing calcium and magnesium
Acidic water moves through a reactive mineral. In basalt, for example, silicate minerals contain calcium, magnesium and iron. Water–rock reactions dissolve part of the silicate structure and release those metals into solution. Ultramafic rocks are also rich in minerals that can supply the needed cations.

3. Precipitating solid carbonates
When dissolved carbonate species meet enough calcium or magnesium, the solution becomes supersaturated and solid minerals form. A simplified example is calcium combining with carbonate to form calcium carbonate. Magnesium can form magnesium carbonates, while iron may participate in iron-bearing carbonate phases. The newly formed minerals remain in the pores and fractures of the host rock.
4. Managing the reaction
Operators must control injection pressure, water chemistry, flow paths and the availability of reactive surface area. Faster mineralization is useful, but excessive precipitation near a well could reduce permeability. A viable design therefore balances reaction speed with continued injectivity and reliable monitoring.

How the Carbfix underground method works
Carbfix’s method couples carbon capture with geological storage. Instead of injecting a concentrated CO₂ stream as a separate gas phase, the captured CO₂ is dissolved in water and sent into reactive basalt.
- Capture and condition the CO₂. The source may be an industrial process or a direct-air-capture system. Impurities, pressure and water quality have to be compatible with the injection system.
- Dissolve the CO₂ in water. Mixing under pressure produces a carbonated solution. Dissolved CO₂ is denser and behaves differently from a buoyant gas plume, although the water still has to be managed safely underground.
- Transport the solution to the injection site. Pipelines, pumps, storage tanks and wells connect the capture plant to suitable geology. The distance and elevation between those components affect energy use and cost.
- Inject into basalt. Wells deliver the solution into permeable zones. The basalt supplies calcium, magnesium and iron through water–rock reactions.
- Track pressure and chemistry. Operators monitor injection rates, pressure, groundwater chemistry and seismic or well-integrity signals to confirm that the fluid follows the approved storage interval.
- Verify mineral formation. Samples, geochemical models and subsurface measurements are used to estimate how much carbon has precipitated and whether the storage formation is behaving as designed.
At Iceland’s Hellisheiði geothermal plant, a Carbfix educational article describes injection wells deeper than 2,000 metres. The article reports about 12,000 tonnes of CO₂ mineralized annually at that site and approximately 70,000 tonnes injected since the process began in 2014. Those are historical figures reported by Carbfix, not verified current operating totals.

Carbfix also reports that more than 95% of injected CO₂ at its pilot had mineralized within two years, attributing the result to a 2016 peer-reviewed Science paper. This is a reported pilot result; performance at another formation, depth or injection design cannot be assumed to match it.
The same educational article described an early pairing with a direct-air-capture system that removed about 50 tonnes of CO₂ per year. That figure describes a historical demonstration, not the capacity of every current direct-air-capture facility.
Why basalt is useful—and why location matters
Basalt is widespread and contains the calcium, magnesium and iron needed for carbonate formation. Its fractures and pore spaces can provide pathways for injected water. However, “basalt exists here” is not enough to establish a storage project.

- Permeability and porosity: The formation must accept the designed water flow without excessive pressure.
- Depth and temperature: The selected interval must support the process while remaining within well, reservoir and groundwater regulations.
- Confinement: Overlying layers and well construction must protect usable groundwater and keep the injection zone controlled.
- Water supply: Dissolving and injecting CO₂ requires a dependable water source; treatment may be needed to prevent scaling or unwanted reactions.
- Reactive capacity: The rock must contain enough accessible minerals to bind the intended quantity of carbon.
- Infrastructure: Capture equipment, compression or pumping, pipelines, wells, monitoring instruments and electricity all have to be available.
The Department of Energy notes that brines, basaltic and ultramafic rocks, and some alkaline industrial residues can support mineralization. A site assessment must determine the local mineralogy, groundwater setting, stress conditions and permitting requirements. The Iceland demonstration therefore shows a pathway, not a universal guarantee that every basalt deposit is suitable.
Is carbon mineralization permanent?
Carbonate minerals are generally far less mobile than dissolved CO₂ or a gas plume. Once carbon is incorporated into a solid phase, it is not expected to migrate rapidly through the formation. That is the central permanence advantage of mineral storage.
“Permanent” still depends on the whole system. Before precipitation, dissolved CO₂ must travel through wells and rock. Poorly designed wells, unexpected fractures, pressure changes or inadequate monitoring could create pathways that move carbon or affect groundwater. Mineral carbonates can also dissolve under sufficiently acidic conditions, although the relevant rate depends on mineral type and local chemistry.
Credible accounting must therefore include capture emissions, electricity, water handling, transport, well construction and monitoring—not only the tonnes that eventually appear as carbonate. A project should report the net removal after those emissions and document how it verifies mineral formation over time.
Mineralized building materials: storing carbon in products
Mineralization does not have to happen underground. Engineered processes can react CO₂ with alkaline feedstocks to make precipitated calcium carbonate, precast or multifunctional concrete, synthetic aggregates, bicarbonates and related construction materials.

These products offer a saleable output instead of a subsurface storage formation. The product may lock carbon into a building component or aggregate for as long as that material remains stable. Manufacturing can also replace some conventional mined inputs, but the climate result depends on the source of the alkaline material, process energy, product lifetime and what material the product displaces.
The Department of Energy identifies cost and market entry as continuing barriers. A material must meet strength, durability, safety and building-code requirements, secure buyers and compete with established products. A product that contains mineralized carbon is not automatically a net removal if its production causes equal or greater emissions elsewhere.

Marine enhanced rock weathering is a different pathway
Project Vesta’s marine enhanced rock weathering concept adds olivine sand to coastal systems. As the mineral weathers, it consumes acidity and is intended to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere while reducing ocean acidity. The process does not pump dissolved CO₂ into deep basalt, and it does not create the same underground carbonate-storage formation.
Marine deployment introduces questions that do not arise in the same way for a sealed injection well: where particles travel, how quickly they dissolve, how trace elements behave, and how plankton, shellfish, sediments and food webs respond. Monitoring must cover both carbon chemistry and ecological effects across the treated area.
Project Vesta publishes an estimate of $35 per tonne and an estimate that using 0.1%–0.25% of shelf seas could capture 1 gigatonne of CO₂. These are undated company estimates, not independently validated results established here. They should not be compared directly with Carbfix’s historical tonnes injected or with a construction product’s market price.

What determines cost and scale
There is no single price for carbon mineralization. Costs vary with the CO₂ source, capture method, distance to rock, water treatment, drilling depth, electricity, monitoring duration and the value of any product made.
- Capture: Dilute CO₂ from air generally requires different equipment and energy than a concentrated industrial stream.
- Water and pumping: Dissolution and injection need pumps, water treatment and pressure management.
- Drilling: Deep wells are capital-intensive, and additional wells may be needed for injection, observation and pressure control.
- Reservoir characterization: Seismic surveys, cores, tracer tests and geochemical modeling reduce uncertainty but add development expense.
- Verification: Long-term sampling and instrumentation are necessary to substantiate removal claims.
- Product markets: Engineered materials must pass standards and find buyers; storage-only projects instead depend on contracts or policy mechanisms for verified removals.
The European Commission’s CORDIS summary describes CarbFix2 as a project to optimize subsurface injection of CO₂ dissolved in water and make the method economically viable across a wider storage chain. That statement establishes the project’s purpose, not proof that the approach has reached commercial scale everywhere.
How to judge a mineralization claim
- Identify the pathway. Ask whether the claim concerns underground injection, a manufactured product or marine weathering.
- Check the denominator. “Tonnes injected,” “tonnes mineralized,” “tonnes removed” and “tonnes of product” are different measurements.
- Locate the date and attribution. Historical site figures and company estimates should be labeled as such.
- Examine net emissions. Include capture, electricity, mining or grinding, transport, water and monitoring.
- Look for site-specific evidence. Mineralogy, injectivity, groundwater protection and monitoring results cannot be transferred automatically from Iceland to another region.
- Separate modeled potential from demonstrated removal. A theoretical capacity or a company projection is not the same as independently verified atmospheric CO₂ removal.
Bottom line for readers
Carbon mineralization is a chemical route for converting CO₂ into solid carbonate minerals. Carbfix accelerates that natural process by dissolving captured CO₂ in water and injecting it into reactive basalt, where water–rock reactions supply the metals needed to form carbonates. The approach can provide durable geological storage when the geology, wells, water supply and monitoring system are appropriate.
