A compatible Amazon Fire tablet can provide hands-free voice requests, visual answers in Show Mode, selected smart-home controls and touch-based Alexa commands. A different Android or iPad tablet can run the Alexa app for device management, reminders, Drop In, music and other functions, but the app does not automatically provide the same wake-word or Show Mode experience.
Amazon’s own wording is concise: “Ask questions, shop, search, play music, and more on your compatible Fire tablet.” The important qualification is compatible. Model generation, Fire OS version, power state, screen state, account profile and privacy settings all affect what works.

Two different ways to use Alexa on a tablet
Alexa built into a compatible Fire tablet
On supported Fire tablets, Alexa is integrated into Fire OS. You can speak a wake word, ask for information, search, shop, play music and make other requests. Some models can continue listening for the wake word with the screen on, and some can do so while plugged in with the screen off. Amazon cautions that a tablet may not detect the wake word when the screen is off and the tablet is running on battery.

Supported models can also switch into Show Mode. This changes the tablet into a more visual, full-screen Alexa display, with responses designed to be read or viewed from a distance. Show Mode is not available on every Fire tablet, even within the same product family.

The Alexa app on another tablet
On an Android tablet or iPad, the Alexa app provides an in-app assistant and tools for managing Alexa devices. Amazon lists device management, Drop In, reminders, alarms and timers, smart-home and music controls, and Skills among the app’s functions. These features require you to open or otherwise interact with the app; installing the app does not prove that the tablet supports system-wide wake-word detection, hands-free listening with the screen off or Show Mode.

What Alexa can do on a compatible Fire tablet
Answer questions and carry out requests
You can ask for information, search for content, shop through your Amazon account, play music and issue other Alexa requests. The exact result depends on the Alexa service, your account, installed apps and the device or service being controlled. A Fire tablet is not guaranteed to support every Alexa function available on an Echo device or in another region.
When Alexa responds in ordinary tablet mode, the interaction can be primarily voice based. In Show Mode, the same type of request can produce a larger visual response, such as text, cards or other full-screen content.

Hands-free Alexa must be enabled, and support varies by model. On some Fire tablets it works while the display is on and while the tablet is connected to power. A tablet may fail to hear the wake word when the screen is off and the charger is disconnected. If hands-free mode is disabled, saying the wake word does nothing; you can still invoke Alexa outside Show Mode by pressing and holding the Home button.

Turn the tablet into a visual Alexa display with Show Mode
Show Mode is an immersive interface rather than a separate Alexa account. It presents visual responses full screen and can be entered or exited from Quick Actions or with a spoken command on supported tablets. Compatibility is limited to Amazon’s current model-and-software list, so the name “Fire HD 10” alone is not enough to establish support.
Control selected smart-home devices
The Fire tablet Device Dashboard can expose compatible lights, plugs, switches, thermostats and cameras. The tablet, Alexa app and smart-home products must be set up compatibly, generally under the same Amazon account and on the same Wi-Fi network. The dashboard is a defined set of categories, not a promise that every type of connected device will appear.
Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance also identifies limits around account profiles and parental controls. Routines and camera access are not supported from a secondary device profile or when parental controls are enabled.

Use Alexa without speaking through Tap to Alexa
Tap to Alexa places on-screen tiles and typed requests on the tablet. It is useful when the room is noisy, when speaking is inconvenient or when you want to review a command before sending it. Amazon says Tap to Alexa is compatible with Switch Access on Fire tablets and supports Bluetooth switches, providing an accessibility option beyond voice input.

Show Mode compatibility: check the exact generation and software
Amazon’s current Show Mode support page lists the following compatible combinations. The software number is a minimum version; an older Fire OS installation can prevent Show Mode even when the hardware generation appears in the list.

The same support page lists these models as not compatible with Show Mode: Fire 7 (7th, 9th and 12th generations), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation) and Fire HD 10 (13th generation). Amazon can revise compatibility documentation, so check the exact model and installed software before buying a tablet specifically for Show Mode.
How to enable, invoke or disable hands-free Alexa
Enable hands-free mode
- Open Settings on the Fire tablet.
- Select Alexa.
- Turn on Hands-Free Mode.
- Keep the tablet in a condition supported by your model: for example, with the screen on or connected to power if that is required.
Amazon also exposes the control in Quick Actions. If the tablet’s software provides the hardware shortcut, holding Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds toggles hands-free Alexa.

Outside Show Mode, press and hold the Home button to invoke Alexa. This avoids wake-word listening while preserving a deliberate, button-initiated interaction. Tap to Alexa provides a third option on supported models: use the screen and keyboard instead of voice.

Stop wake-word responses immediately
- Open Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode and switch it off, or use the hands-free control in Quick Actions.
- If supported, hold Volume Up and Volume Down together for three seconds.
- Confirm that the wake word no longer activates Alexa before placing the tablet in a private area.
What the recording indicators mean
Amazon says Fire tablets use on-device keyword spotting to detect the wake word. The tablet does not stream all surrounding audio merely because the microphone is available for keyword detection. Once the wake word is detected, the tablet streams audio to Amazon’s cloud for processing, including a fraction of a second of audio immediately before the wake word.
A blue line appears while audio is streaming, and a short tone marks the beginning and end of the stream. These indicators tell you when the tablet has moved from local wake-word detection to cloud processing. They do not mean that every sound in the room is continuously uploaded.

Use Alexa Privacy controls
Voice recordings, transcripts and typed Alexa requests can be reviewed and deleted through Alexa Privacy controls in the Alexa app or through Amazon’s Alexa privacy settings. The controls apply to data associated with your Amazon account, so use the account that is signed in on the tablet.

Issue a voice deletion request
On a Fire tablet, you can say Delete what I just said to remove the most recent request, or Delete everything I said today to request deletion of that day’s Alexa history. These commands affect Amazon-held Alexa data covered by the account controls.

Amazon cautions that information collected by third parties or stored outside Amazon’s cloud may not be deleted through Alexa Privacy controls. Deleting an Alexa transcript therefore is not a guarantee that another service’s copy, log or recording disappears.
Profiles, parental controls and the lock screen
Use the main profile
Amazon states that you must sign in with the main profile to use Alexa features on a Fire tablet. Secondary profiles, including child profiles, cannot access Alexa features. If Alexa works for the owner but disappears after switching profiles, that is an account-profile restriction rather than a microphone fault.
Understand restrictions from parental controls
Parental controls can affect more than voice requests. Amazon’s Device Dashboard guidance says routines and camera access are not supported from a secondary device profile or when parental controls are enabled. A family tablet can therefore show some smart-home controls while withholding others.
Expect passcode prompts on a locked tablet
With a passcode-locked Fire tablet, only certain Alexa functions are available through the wake word without unlocking. Other requests require the passcode. A trusted Wi-Fi network can change some prompts, but Amazon says you may still need the passcode to exit Show Mode. Treat a locked tablet as a limited control surface, not as an unlocked smart-home panel.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
Alexa does not respond to the wake word
- Check Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode.
- Test with the screen on and, if necessary, connect the tablet to power; some models do not listen with the screen off while unplugged.
- Confirm that you are using the main profile rather than a secondary or child profile.
- Look for the blue streaming indicator and tones after speaking. If they never appear, the wake-word condition was not met.
Show Mode is missing
- Identify the tablet’s exact generation, not only its product name.
- Check the Fire OS version against Amazon’s minimum version list.
- If the model is Fire 7 (7th, 9th or 12th generation), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation) or Fire HD 10 (13th generation), Amazon lists it as incompatible.
A smart-home device does not appear
- Verify that the tablet, Alexa app and device use compatible setup under the same account and Wi-Fi network.
- Check whether the product is one of the Device Dashboard categories: light, plug, switch, thermostat or camera.
- Test from the main profile and review parental-control settings, because routines and camera access have additional restrictions.
Is a new tablet required?
No. If your existing Fire tablet is on Amazon’s compatible list and meets the software requirement, it can provide the relevant Alexa feature without replacement. Conversely, purchasing a newer-looking Fire tablet does not guarantee Show Mode: Amazon’s list excludes several newer-generation models. First identify the exact generation, update software where supported, and decide whether you need voice interaction, visual Show Mode, typed Tap to Alexa or only the mobile app’s management tools.
Alexa on a tablet is therefore best understood as a set of conditional capabilities rather than one universal feature. Fire tablet integration can add hands-free requests, visual responses and selected smart-home controls; the Alexa app broadens management functions on other tablets. Privacy indicators, deletion controls, profile rules and lock-screen behavior determine how safely and predictably those capabilities operate.
