What can you do with a Samsung Galaxy phone connected to a Chromebook?

Connecting a Samsung Galaxy phone to a Chromebook turns the two devices into a small cross-device workspace. You can read and reply to SMS messages, see chat notifications, check the phone’s battery and cellular signal, use quick controls such as hotspot and silent mode, view Android Chrome tabs, move recent photos and screenshots to the Chromebook, share the phone’s mobile connection, and use the phone to unlock the Chromebook.

These are Android features documented by Google, not a blanket guarantee for every Galaxy model or One UI release. Basic connected-phone functions have broad Android version requirements, while app streaming is limited to specific phone families in Google’s current guidance and does not list Samsung Galaxy devices. Treat each feature separately and verify what your model exposes in Chromebook settings.

What the Galaxy–Chromebook connection actually provides

ChromeOS uses two related systems. The general connected-phone setup links an Android phone to the same Google Account as the Chromebook. Phone Hub then adds a panel on the Chromebook with phone status, recent activity and controls. Smart Lock is a separate convenience that can use the nearby phone’s presence to unlock the Chromebook.

Task What you can do Important qualification
Phone status See cellular signal and battery level in Phone Hub. Availability depends on the connected-device setup and ChromeOS version.
Quick controls Enable the phone’s hotspot, silence the phone, or use the locate-phone command. The phone must be connected and reachable for commands to work.
Messages Send and receive SMS from the Chromebook and sync chat notifications. Messaging behavior follows the Android phone’s messaging and notification permissions.
Browser handoff View Chrome tabs that are open on the Android phone. The tabs shown are Android Chrome tabs, not tabs from every browser.
Photos Open or download recent photos and screenshots from the phone’s Gallery. Phone Hub focuses on recent items rather than presenting the entire phone storage.
Mobile data Connect the Chromebook to the phone’s network, including through a hotspot command. Carrier plan, signal and hotspot policies still apply.
Unlocking Use Smart Lock with the nearby phone instead of typing the Chromebook password every time. Both devices, Bluetooth, internet access and the phone’s screen lock must meet Google’s conditions.
App streaming Stream selected Android phone apps in a Chromebook window. Google documents this only for supported phone families; Galaxy compatibility is not established by that guidance.

Messages and notifications on the Chromebook

Once connected, the Chromebook can sync chat notifications from the phone and let you send and receive text messages without picking up the Galaxy. This is useful when you are writing on a physical keyboard or working with Chromebook notifications already open.

The Chromebook is acting as an interface to the phone’s messaging service, not as an independent cellular device. The phone remains the device with the mobile number and network connection. If notifications are disabled on the phone, the relevant app is restricted in the background, or an administrator blocks connected-phone features, messages may not appear or may require action on the phone.

Phone Hub: status, controls and recent activity

Check battery and signal

Phone Hub can show the Galaxy’s battery status and cellular signal on the Chromebook. This gives you a quick check before leaving your desk or starting a call, without opening the phone.

Use quick commands

Google lists commands for enabling a hotspot, silencing the phone and locating it. The exact control is exposed in the Phone Hub panel when the phone is paired. A command can fail if the phone is powered off, out of Bluetooth range, disconnected, or blocked by a work or school policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

See Android Chrome tabs

Phone Hub can display tabs currently open in Chrome on the Android phone. Selecting a tab lets you continue reading on the Chromebook’s larger screen. This handoff is limited to Chrome tabs that the phone reports; it does not mirror the entire phone display.

Get recent photos and screenshots

Phone Hub can show recent photos and screenshots from the phone’s Gallery, with an option to access or download them on the Chromebook. Google’s connected-phone feature list also describes photo syncing. For a large archive or folders outside the recent view, use a separate file-transfer method; Phone Hub is designed for quick access to recent captures.

Using the Galaxy’s mobile connection

A connected Chromebook can use the phone’s network. Phone Hub’s hotspot command is the quickest route when supported: enable the hotspot from the panel, then select the resulting Wi-Fi network on the Chromebook. The phone must have mobile data and a carrier plan that permits tethering. Data limits, throttling and carrier charges are separate from ChromeOS and are not changed by pairing.

If the Chromebook is already online through Wi-Fi, the connection still has value when you leave that network. Keep the two devices close enough for their Bluetooth and Wi-Fi handoff to remain reliable, and turn the hotspot off when finished to reduce battery and data use.

Unlocking the Chromebook with Smart Lock

Smart Lock can use a nearby connected Android phone to unlock the Chromebook. Google’s requirements are specific: both devices need internet access and the same Google Account; the phone must be nearby, unlocked, have Bluetooth enabled and have a screen lock configured. Google says Smart Lock is enabled by default after a phone connection, but you can disable it in connected-device settings.

Smart Lock is a convenience, not a replacement for the Chromebook’s account security. If the phone is locked, too far away, offline or has Bluetooth disabled, the Chromebook will require its normal sign-in method. A work or school administrator can also block Smart Lock.

How to connect a Galaxy phone

Check the version and account requirements

  • For Google’s general connected-phone setup, use the same Google Account on the phone and Chromebook.
  • Google lists ChromeOS 71 or later and Android 6 or later for the general connection.
  • For Phone Hub specifically, Google lists a Chromebook on M89 or later and an Android phone on Android 5.1 or later.
  • Turn on Bluetooth on the Galaxy and keep both devices nearby during pairing.
  • If either device belongs to an employer or school, check whether management policies restrict connected-phone features.

These are platform floors, not a promise that every Galaxy model exposes every function. Samsung’s Android and One UI updates can change menus and permissions, so use the labels shown on your devices.

Pair from Chromebook settings

  1. On the Chromebook, open the system controls by selecting the time area, then open Settings.
  2. Open Connected devices and choose the phone or Phone control offered for adding an Android device.
  3. Select the Galaxy, confirm that the Google Account is the intended one, and follow the on-screen pairing prompts.
  4. Accept the requested connection and notification permissions on the phone. Keep Bluetooth on while the initial setup completes.
  5. Return to Settings > Connected devices to review Phone Hub and Smart Lock options. Individual Phone Hub features can be switched on or off there.

After pairing, open Phone Hub from the Chromebook shelf or system area to see status, controls, tabs and recent photos. If a feature is missing, check its toggle in Connected devices before assuming the Galaxy is incompatible.

App streaming: the feature that needs the most caution

App streaming opens selected phone apps in a Chromebook window instead of merely showing a notification. It is not the same as screen mirroring: the Chromebook requests a stream for an individual supported app, while the app continues to run on the phone.

Google’s current Phone Hub guidance names Pixel 4a or later running Android 13 or later, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and select Xiaomi devices on Android 13 or later. Samsung Galaxy phones are not among those examples. Therefore, do not promise app streaming for a Galaxy, and do not claim that every Galaxy is excluded. The cited Google guidance simply does not establish Galaxy support for a particular model or One UI version.

Requirements when app streaming is offered

  • Grant the phone permissions for notifications, photos and media, and apps when prompted.
  • Keep the phone and Chromebook close together.
  • They normally need to share a Wi-Fi network. Some public or private networks do not allow the local connections streaming needs.
  • Google mentions Instant Tethering as a way to place both devices on the same local network when the current Wi-Fi environment prevents streaming.
  • Some entertainment apps can behave unexpectedly because of digital-rights-management policies.

App streaming also has stricter network requirements than the basic Phone Hub features. Google says the described Phone Hub functions can still be used when the Chromebook is offline, but streaming requires the phone and Chromebook to establish their own connection. If the app-streaming control does not appear on your Galaxy, treat that as an availability limitation rather than a setup error.

What works offline and what does not

Google states that the described Phone Hub features can still be used when the Chromebook is offline. This covers the panel’s documented status and quick-access functions as long as the phone remains connected locally. Internet-dependent actions can still fail: SMS delivery needs the phone’s service, a hotspot needs mobile data, and an Android Chrome tab or photo may not refresh if the phone cannot provide it.

App streaming is the exception with explicit network requirements. A Chromebook that has no internet connection may still connect locally in some circumstances, but Google requires the devices to be close and normally on the same Wi-Fi network for streaming. Do not assume that ordinary offline Phone Hub behavior means streaming will work offline.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The Galaxy does not appear during setup

  • Confirm the same Google Account is active on both devices.
  • Turn Bluetooth off and on again on the phone, then keep the devices close.
  • Check the ChromeOS and Android minimum versions listed above.
  • Open Chromebook Settings > Connected devices and remove an old phone entry before trying again.
  • On a managed Chromebook or phone, ask the administrator whether connected-phone features are disabled.

Phone Hub appears but a control is missing

Open Connected devices and inspect each Phone Hub toggle. Google allows individual features to be enabled or disabled. A missing control can also reflect the phone’s current state: a hotspot command requires a phone capable of tethering, and status or locate commands require the phone to be reachable.

Messages or notifications do not sync

Check notification permission for the messaging app on the Galaxy, keep the phone connected, and verify that the app is not restricted by battery-saving settings. The Chromebook is relaying the phone’s notifications; changing the notification policy on the phone can therefore remove the Chromebook alert.

Photos or screenshots are not visible

Take a new screenshot or photo, wait for the phone to finish saving it to Gallery, and reopen Phone Hub. The panel is intended for recent items. For older images or files outside the recent view, use another transfer method rather than expecting the entire Gallery library to load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

App streaming fails or is unavailable

First determine whether Google lists your phone family and Android version for streaming. If it is not listed, Galaxy support is unconfirmed. If the option is present, grant all requested permissions, place both devices on the same Wi-Fi network, avoid restricted guest networks, and try Instant Tethering when available. DRM-protected entertainment apps may still refuse to stream even after setup is correct.

Smart Lock will not unlock the Chromebook

Make sure the phone is unlocked, nearby, connected to the internet, paired to the same Google Account, and has Bluetooth and a screen lock enabled. If those conditions are met, check the Smart Lock switch under Connected devices. A managed account or device policy can override the setting.

Choosing which feature to set up first

Start with the function that solves your immediate problem rather than assuming the Galaxy must support every Phone Hub capability.

  1. For desk work: enable message and chat-notification syncing so you can respond from the Chromebook keyboard.
  2. For quick checks: use Phone Hub for battery, signal, recent photos, screenshots and Android Chrome tabs.
  3. For travel: configure hotspot access and confirm that your carrier permits tethering before relying on it.
  4. For convenience: test Smart Lock only after Bluetooth, internet, account and screen-lock requirements are satisfied.
  5. For phone apps: look for the app-streaming option, then compare your exact Galaxy model and Android release with Google’s supported examples instead of assuming compatibility.

The basic connection is therefore useful even when app streaming is unavailable. Samsung Galaxy ownership gives you an Android phone that can use Google’s connected-device framework, but the final result is feature-by-feature: broad functions such as notifications, SMS, status, photos, network access and Smart Lock have documented Android requirements, while app streaming remains the uncertain part for Galaxy devices.
