Its four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports and HDMI 2.1 port handle displays, but the number and modes of displays you can use at once depend on whether you choose M5 Max or M5 Ultra. The front USB-C ports also differ between those configurations.

These specifications are Apple’s for the current M5 Max and M5 Ultra Mac Studio. Port type and display capacity vary by chip; check the current Mac Studio specifications for the configuration you are considering.

How many displays can a Mac Studio run?
There is no single display count that applies to every Mac Studio setup. Apple says the number of displays usable at once depends on the Mac model and on each display’s resolution and refresh rate. These are the published maximum configurations for the current models:

These are Apple-published maximum modes, not a guarantee that any combination of screens will reach them. A monitor’s inputs, its resolution and refresh rate, the cable, and the chosen port all affect compatibility. Apple lists DisplayPort 2.1 on the Thunderbolt 5 ports and support for variable refresh rate (VRR), HDR, and multichannel audio. What accessories and devices can you connect?
Displays, monitors, and televisions
Use a compatible Thunderbolt or USB-C display path through a Thunderbolt 5 port, or connect an HDMI monitor or television to the HDMI 2.1 port. The Mac Studio is a desktop computer, and Apple lists only the computer and power cord in the box, so plan separately for a display and any cable it requires.
Storage and USB peripherals
Thunderbolt 5 and USB-C storage or peripherals can connect to the rear Thunderbolt ports; compatible USB-A accessories can plug directly into the two rear USB-A ports. The actual transfer rate depends on the connected device and cable, as well as the port. A hub is not automatically necessary just to connect USB-A equipment.

SDXC cards
Insert a compatible SDXC card into the front UHS-II slot to access card media without a separate reader. A different memory-card format may require its own compatible reader.
Wired networking
Connect the RJ-45 Ethernet port to a compatible router, switch, or other network equipment. The Mac supports 1Gb, 2.5Gb, 5Gb, and 10Gb Ethernet; the negotiated link speed depends on the network equipment and cabling.

Headphones and other audio devices
Use the 3.5 mm jack for wired headphones, including high-impedance headphones. HDMI can carry multichannel audio, and compatible Bluetooth audio devices can connect wirelessly.
Keyboard, mouse, and wireless devices
The Mac Studio includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread for compatible wireless connections. Wired USB keyboards, mice, and other input devices can use the available USB-A or USB-C ports.

Check compatibility before buying a display or cable
- Identify the exact Mac Studio chip and generation. Current M5 Max and M5 Ultra display limits do not automatically apply to earlier Mac Studio models.
- Write down the display setup you want. Count the screens and note each one’s resolution and target refresh rate.
- Match each display to a port. Confirm whether it will use HDMI or a Thunderbolt/USB-C connection, and that the selected port is available for that configuration.
- Check the monitor input and cable rating. The cable and display must support the intended mode; a port’s maximum specification alone does not establish what a particular cable-and-monitor combination can do.
Apple’s support guide separates display guidance by Mac model and generation, so use it rather than applying current-model figures to an older Studio.
