What PlayStation Store wallet funds are
Your PlayStation Store wallet is an account balance used for eligible purchases made through the PlayStation Store. It is not a general-purpose cash balance: you cannot normally withdraw it, spend it outside the Store or transfer it to another person. The US PlayStation Network Terms of Service also allow wallet funds for certain third-party services, but that wording does not mean every third-party service accepts them.

Store catalogs, taxes, payment options, voucher rules and third-party availability differ by country. Guidance from PlayStation’s US wallet and terms pages and its Singapore purchase guidance should therefore be treated as a framework; check the support and Store terms for the region attached to your account before paying.
What you can buy
| Purchase type | What wallet funds can cover | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
| Digital games | Eligible full-game downloads sold in the PlayStation Store | Check the edition, supported platform, age rating and system requirements on the listing. |
| Downloadable content and add-ons | Expansion packs, add-on missions, character packs and other paid game content | Confirm which base game and platform the add-on requires. |
| Pre-orders | Eligible digital games and other content offered for pre-order | Pre-order cancellation and refund rules are separate from the general game-refund checklist. |
| In-game purchases | Virtual currency, consumables, skins, emotes, bonus levels, XP boosts and similar items | These are digital-content purchases; refund eligibility can be limited once delivery or use has begun. |
| Season passes | Bundles that provide access to planned future downloadable content | Included DLC may need to be downloaded separately when it releases. |
| Subscriptions | Eligible subscriptions, including PlayStation Plus, and renewals | A payment method may still be required on the account even when wallet funds are intended to pay. |
| Other digital content | Additional eligible Store products listed for your region | Eligibility is determined by the local Store listing and current terms. |
Digital games and add-ons
Wallet funds can pay for digital games, downloadable content and other add-ons listed for purchase in the Store. Before confirming, read the product page rather than relying on the title alone. Different editions can contain different bonuses, and a PlayStation 4 version may not automatically be the same product as a PlayStation 5 version. The listing also identifies age restrictions and any technical requirements relevant to that item.

Pre-orders
PlayStation supports pre-orders for digital content. A pre-order is not automatically governed by the same refund timing as a game that has already released. The date and conditions shown in PlayStation’s current pre-order policy determine whether you can cancel or request a refund, so review them before committing wallet funds.
In-game currency and virtual items
Wallet funds may be used for virtual currency and other in-game items such as consumables, skins, emotes, bonus levels and experience boosts. These purchases can be delivered immediately or become usable in the game after you complete the transaction. Keep the refund rules in mind: the category and whether the content has been downloaded, streamed or used can affect eligibility.
Season passes
A season pass is a bundle rather than a single finished download. It can include future content releases, and the included add-ons may have to be downloaded separately as they become available. Check the pass description for the items included, the supported game edition and the platform on which each component works.

Subscriptions such as PlayStation Plus
PlayStation’s US terms state that, when money is in your PSN Wallet, you may use it to complete a purchase or renew a subscription. That includes eligible PlayStation Plus transactions. However, PlayStation’s wallet guidance says a payment method may still be required on the account. This requirement can apply even when the wallet balance is sufficient, particularly because subscriptions can renew automatically. Review the checkout and subscription settings for your region before starting or renewing a plan.
Certain third-party services
The US PlayStation Network Terms of Service refer to wallet use for certain third-party services. The terms do not establish that all third-party services accept wallet funds, and this option may not be available in every country. Treat it as a region- and service-specific exception, not as a general way to spend the balance anywhere online.
How wallet funds are applied at checkout
PlayStation uses available wallet funds first. If the total price, including any applicable charges shown at checkout, exceeds the balance, PlayStation may collect the shortfall through another accepted payment method. This means a wallet does not have to contain the full purchase price for you to complete an eligible transaction, but the account must be able to provide an approved way to pay the difference.

Example of a short balance
Suppose your wallet contains $20 and an eligible Store purchase totals $24. PlayStation can apply the $20 wallet balance and request the remaining $4 from another accepted method. The exact currency, tax treatment and payment options depend on your account region, so the amount shown on the final review screen is the controlling figure.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy a card can still be requested
Subscriptions are the main reason a payment method can be requested even when you plan to use wallet funds. A recurring service needs a way to renew if the wallet is empty later. Adding a valid payment method does not necessarily mean the card is charged immediately; the checkout and subscription terms indicate how the wallet and backup method will be used.
How to use the balance for a purchase
- Check the account region. Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns the wallet and confirm that the Store region matches the content or voucher you intend to use. Accounts and vouchers are region-specific.
- Open the product listing. In the PlayStation Store on your console or through the Store website for your region, inspect the edition, platform, age rating, included items and any subscription or pre-order conditions.
- Add the item and continue to checkout. Review the complete total shown by PlayStation, including any applicable tax or other charge presented for your location.
- Review the funding sources. Wallet funds should be applied first. If the balance is short, confirm that an accepted secondary payment method is available. For a subscription, add or retain a payment method if PlayStation requires one.
- Confirm only after checking the refund terms. Digital-content refunds can depend on the category, download or streaming status and the time since purchase. Pre-orders, subscriptions and voucher-funded purchases can have different conditions.
Adding money to your wallet
An adult account can add funds with an eligible payment method or a PlayStation Store gift card or other Store voucher. PlayStation says these vouchers are sold by various retailers; availability, denominations and pricing are retailer- and region-specific, so verify those details before buying.

Using a gift card or voucher
- Buy a voucher intended for the same country or region as the receiving PlayStation account.
- Check the voucher’s region on the packaging or retailer listing before paying. A code from another region may not redeem on your account.
- Redeem the code through the Store’s voucher-redeem function while signed in to the correct adult account.
- Confirm that the wallet balance increased before attempting the purchase.
A gift card adds wallet value; it does not change the region of an account and does not guarantee that every Store item is available to that account.

Child accounts
Child accounts do not have separate wallets. A child can make eligible purchases using the family manager’s wallet, subject to the spending limit configured by the family manager. PlayStation says the default monthly limit is zero, so the manager must raise the limit before the child can spend anything. The family manager remains responsible for the account’s wallet and the resulting purchases.

The account country or region controls the Store catalog and voucher compatibility. A voucher code must match that region. Content bought in one region may also have compatibility limits with a game, add-on or account from another region, so check the product listing before redeeming funds.

Country-specific availability
Payment methods, taxes, subscription offerings, third-party services and even individual Store products can vary by country. A feature described in US terms or on a Singapore support page should not be assumed to apply identically elsewhere.
Refunds and purchases you cannot reverse easily
Wallet top-ups
Added wallet funds are generally non-refundable. Treat a top-up as money committed to that account unless local law or a specific PlayStation policy provides an exception.
Games and downloadable content
PlayStation’s general Store refund checklist for games and DLC typically requires that the request be made within 14 days of purchase and that the content has not been downloaded or streamed. Exceptions can apply, including faulty content. The current refund policy for your region controls the result.
Subscriptions, pre-orders and vouchers
Subscription and pre-order refunds follow different rules from the standard game-and-DLC checklist. Purchases funded by a voucher can also have payment-method-specific limitations. Check the policy that applies to the exact transaction rather than assuming that every digital purchase qualifies under the same 14-day conditions.
Can you transfer, cash out or use the balance elsewhere?
PlayStation says wallet funds have no value outside the Store and are generally non-transferable, except where applicable law requires otherwise. You cannot normally convert the balance to cash, send it to another account or use it as a general payment card. A family manager’s wallet can fund eligible child-account purchases through family controls, but that is not a transfer of wallet ownership.
Common problems and the practical fix
- The voucher will not redeem: Check that its country or region matches the account. Also make sure the code has not already been redeemed and that you are signed in to the intended account.
- The wallet does not cover the total: Review the final total and ensure an accepted secondary payment method is available for the shortfall.
- A subscription asks for a card: Add a valid payment method if required, even when the wallet has enough for the current charge.
- A child cannot buy an item: Ask the family manager to check the monthly spending limit, account permissions and the wallet balance.
- You want a refund after downloading: Stop using the content and consult the current regional refund policy immediately. Downloading or streaming can remove eligibility for the ordinary game-and-DLC route.
- The item is missing from the Store: Confirm the account region, platform and edition. Catalogs and availability are not identical across countries.
Bottom line for deciding what to spend
Use PlayStation Store wallet funds for eligible digital Store purchases: games, add-ons, in-game currency, season passes, subscriptions and other listed content. Check the product’s region and platform, remember that the wallet is applied before another payment method, and review refund conditions before downloading or streaming. A PlayStation Store gift card is the straightforward way to add funds, but its region must match the account.
