What Can LISA Learn About Black Holes and the Early Universe?

LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, is a planned space-based gravitational-wave observatory intended to study phenomena that are too slow or too low-frequency for ground-based detectors. Its measurements could show how massive black holes formed and grew, test general relativity in the strongest gravitational fields, search for relic signals from the early Universe, and provide an independent way to study cosmic expansion.

Those are mission goals and forecasts, not completed observations. The European Space Agency currently lists a launch around 2035, with industrial development beginning in 2025.

What LISA is designed to discover

LISA will target gravitational waves in an approximately 0.1 millihertz to 0.1 hertz band, according to the European Space Agency (ESA) mission overview. That range is below much of the band monitored by ground-based interferometers, allowing LISA to study massive black-hole systems and other sources whose orbital changes unfold over much longer timescales. ESA’s LISA overview describes the mission as a way to investigate black-hole growth, strong gravity, compact binaries and possible relic waves from the early Universe.

The central scientific questions are:

  • How did the massive black holes at the centers of galaxies form and gain mass?
  • Does gravity behave exactly as general relativity predicts near a black-hole horizon?
  • Did processes in the early Universe produce a gravitational-wave background that survives today?
  • Can gravitational-wave distances improve measurements of the Universe’s expansion?

Why LISA must operate in space

LISA is planned as three spacecraft flying in a triangular formation that trails Earth as it orbits the Sun. The planned distance between spacecraft is 2.5 million kilometres per side. Each spacecraft contains freely falling test masses. Laser interferometry measures changes in the separations between those masses; a passing gravitational wave slightly stretches and compresses the measured distances.

The very long arms and the quiet space environment make the low-frequency band accessible. A ground-based instrument cannot simply be lengthened to millions of kilometres, and terrestrial disturbances would overwhelm the tiny changes being measured. LISA’s formation therefore complements, rather than replaces, ground observatories.

How LISA turns a wave into astrophysical information

  1. Track the spacecraft geometry. Lasers continuously compare distances between the three spacecraft and their test masses.
  2. Identify a changing pattern. A gravitational wave produces a correlated pattern of distance changes across the triangular constellation.
  3. Match the waveform to a source model. The signal’s frequency evolution, strength and modulation encode properties of the emitting system.
  4. Infer source parameters. Analyses can estimate quantities such as masses, spins, orbital behavior and, in suitable cases, distance-related information.
  5. Combine many events or a background measurement. A population of sources can reveal trends that no single event establishes, while a stochastic signal is interpreted statistically rather than as an individual merger.

The result is not an ordinary image of a black hole. It is a measurement of spacetime’s oscillations from which physical properties and cosmic history are inferred.

Black-hole mergers across cosmic time

Massive black-hole mergers

ESA identifies mergers of massive black holes at different redshifts as a core LISA target. Their waves carry information about redshifted masses and spins. By assembling a population, scientists can examine how those properties are distributed over cosmic time and compare competing formation scenarios.

A merger catalogue could address whether massive black holes grew mainly through repeated mergers, through accretion of surrounding matter, or through a combination of channels. The redshift and mass patterns may also indicate when the first massive black-hole seeds appeared and how efficiently they grew. A single event cannot reconstruct the entire history; the strength comes from comparing many systems and their environments.

These observations would connect black-hole physics with galaxy evolution. Massive black holes occupy galactic centers, so their merger history can act as a record of how galaxies assembled and interacted. The exact conclusions will depend on the number and quality of detections LISA obtains.

What the wave reveals about a merger

  • Mass: The waveform’s time and frequency evolution constrain the masses as observed after cosmological redshift is taken into account.
  • Spin: Spin affects the waveform and can reveal how black holes were assembled and whether their angular momentum was inherited or changed by later interactions.
  • Population trends: Comparing masses, spins and redshifts across events allows tests of competing growth models.

Extreme mass-ratio inspirals: testing gravity near a black hole

An extreme mass-ratio inspiral (EMRI) occurs when a much smaller compact object repeatedly orbits a massive black hole before gradually spiraling inward. The orbit can complete many cycles in a region where gravity is highly relativistic. That long, detailed waveform gives LISA a precision probe of the central object.

ESA’s EMRI science case focuses on measuring the central black hole’s mass, spin and quadrupole moment. In general relativity, these properties are linked in a specific way for an ideal black hole. Comparing the measured orbital waveform with that prediction can test whether the object has the expected black-hole spacetime or whether deviations require new physics, an unusual matter configuration or an unrecognized systematic effect.

EMRIs are valuable because the small object acts like a test particle tracing the geometry around the larger one. Instead of observing only the final collision, LISA can follow the inspiral’s accumulated relativistic effects over many orbits. This makes EMRIs one of the mission’s clearest routes to testing gravity in a strong field.

Stellar-origin black holes and other compact binaries

LISA will also observe stellar-origin black-hole binaries and compact binaries such as white-dwarf systems. Galactic binaries can provide detailed orbital and mass parameters, along with distance information. Those measurements support studies of stellar evolution, binary interactions and the physics of compact remnants.

These systems broaden LISA’s scientific return beyond massive black holes. White-dwarf binaries, for example, can serve as a large population of persistent low-frequency sources in the Milky Way. Their orbital properties help map the compact-binary population and test how stars end their lives. The mission’s black-hole results will therefore be interpreted alongside a wider inventory of compact objects.

Could LISA detect a signal from the early Universe?

One of LISA’s most ambitious goals is to search for a stochastic gravitational-wave background left by processes in the early Universe. ESA lists relic gravitational waves among the mission’s core objectives and discusses early-Universe phase transitions as a possible source.

A stochastic background would not look like a single, identifiable merger. It would appear as a statistical excess with characteristic frequency dependence and correlations across the detector’s measurements. If detected, its spectrum could constrain the energy scale and dynamics of the process that produced it. In some models, a phase transition could generate gravitational waves as the early Universe changed state; other models predict a primordial relic background from even earlier epochs.

Detection is not guaranteed. The amplitude and shape depend on the underlying cosmological model, and astrophysical foregrounds may need to be separated from any primordial contribution. The scientifically accurate description is that LISA will search for and may constrain such backgrounds; it is not established that the mission will detect one.

Using gravitational waves to measure cosmic expansion

Gravitational waves carry distance information in a way that differs from conventional astronomical distance ladders. ESA says LISA may use these measurements to study the expansion rate of the Universe and provide a complementary “yardstick” alongside other missions and surveys.

This approach is often described as standard-siren cosmology. The waveform supplies a luminosity-distance estimate, while an electromagnetic counterpart or an independently identified host can provide redshift. Combining distance and redshift tests the relationship between cosmic expansion and time. Even without a counterpart for every event, a population analysis may contribute statistical information if host galaxies or large-scale structure can be associated with the sources.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LISA would therefore test cosmological models with a fundamentally different messenger: ripples in spacetime rather than light. The precision and usefulness of the result will depend on source localization, counterpart identification and the number of suitable events.

What each source class can teach us

Source or signal Physical question Main inference
Massive black-hole mergers How did the largest black holes form and grow? Redshifted masses, spins and population patterns that distinguish growth scenarios
Extreme mass-ratio inspirals Does strong-field gravity match general relativity? Orbital waveform and measurements of the central object’s mass, spin and quadrupole moment
Early-Universe stochastic background Did relic processes, such as phase transitions, generate gravitational waves? Statistical background properties and model-dependent cosmological constraints; detection is uncertain
Galactic compact binaries How do stars evolve into compact remnants? Orbital parameters, masses and distances for black-hole, white-dwarf and other compact systems
Standard-siren sources How fast is the Universe expanding? Gravitational-wave distance information combined with redshift and other surveys

What LISA will not be able to claim automatically

  • One event will not explain all black-hole growth. Formation history requires population statistics and comparison with astrophysical models.
  • A low-frequency signal is not automatically primordial. Astrophysical foregrounds and instrumental effects must be distinguished from an early-Universe background.
  • Measuring a distance is not the same as measuring redshift. Cosmological expansion studies need a redshift from a counterpart, host association or statistical method.
  • Mission specifications are not observations. The frequency band, arm length and launch date describe the planned observatory, not results already obtained.

Mission status and timing

LISA is not operational. ESA’s factsheet lists a planned launch around 2035, subject to mission development. On 17 June 2025, ESA announced that it and OHB System AG had sealed the agreement to build the mission and that industrial development was beginning: ESA’s construction announcement.

The mission is led by ESA with NASA and an international consortium of scientists. Its go-ahead was reported by ESA in January 2024: mission approval and science context. Because launch planning and engineering milestones can change, the latest ESA updates should be consulted for current dates.

Carole Mundell, ESA Director of Science, summarized the ambition: “As the first space mission designed to capture gravitational waves, LISA will open a brand-new window on the dark Universe and test the known laws of physics to their extreme.”

The practical significance of LISA

LISA’s importance is not limited to adding more gravitational-wave detections. It occupies a different frequency range, where the sources are often more massive, more distant in evolutionary history or slower-evolving than those accessible from the ground. That makes it a complementary observatory: ground-based instruments can study one class of rapid, high-frequency mergers, while LISA can follow the long-period systems that reveal massive-black-hole assembly, relativistic orbital dynamics and possible cosmological backgrounds.

If the mission performs as planned, its data could connect three scales that are usually studied separately: the geometry of spacetime near individual black holes, the growth of black-hole populations across galaxies, and physical processes that operated before stars and galaxies existed. Each result will remain tied to the signal quality, source population and cosmological models that make the inference possible.
