Fossils reveal that early oceans were organized ecosystems, not collections of unrelated creatures. Body fossils show anatomy and body plans; tracks and burrows record movement and seafloor disturbance; exceptionally preserved soft tissues expose feeding and digestive structures; and molecular biomarkers indicate which primary producers supplied organic matter. Together, these clues let scientists reconstruct ancient food webs and habitats, although no fossil deposit is a complete census of life.
The strongest conclusions come from combining evidence types and accounting for preservation. A hard shell may survive where a soft body disappears, while a missing fossil may reflect unsuitable burial rather than true absence. The result is a detailed but qualified picture of how Ediacaran and Cambrian animals lived, moved, fed and changed their environments.

What each kind of fossil evidence can show
Different fossils answer different ecological questions. Scientists separate direct physical evidence from interpretation, then compare several lines of evidence before assigning an organism a role in an ancient community.

|---|---|---|
| Body fossils | Shape, hard parts, attachment structures, limbs and other anatomy | Soft tissues and fragile organisms are often lost; evolutionary relationships may remain uncertain |
| Trace fossils | Movement, burrowing, resting, feeding traces and sediment disturbance | The maker is not always known, so behavior is inferred rather than observed directly |
| Exceptional soft-tissue fossils | Feeding structures, digestive systems, muscles and movement-related anatomy | They form only under unusual burial and chemical conditions |
| Molecular biomarkers | Organic matter from groups such as algae or bacteria, extending evidence beyond visible bodies | Results apply to sampled sediments and depend on chemical preservation and interpretation |
This division matters. A body fossil can show that an animal had grasping appendages, but a trackway may provide the better evidence that it actively crossed the seafloor. A biomarker can indicate an algal food supply even when algae themselves left few recognizable fossils.

The Smithsonian’s overview of early animal life combines these approaches to explain how ecological roles became more differentiated through the Ediacaran and Cambrian periods: Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, “History of Life on Earth”.
What Ediacaran fossils reveal about seafloor life
A varied community existed by about 580 million years ago
Late Ediacaran rocks preserve frond-, ribbon- and quilt-shaped organisms unlike most familiar modern animals. The Smithsonian places a proliferation of varied seafloor forms by about 580 million years ago and notes that evidence comes from rocks around the world. These fossils establish that the ocean floor already supported multiple body designs and lifestyles before the Cambrian diversification.
They do not, however, provide a simple family tree. The evolutionary relationships of many Ediacaran forms remain uncertain, and resemblance to a modern animal does not prove close relationship. Scientists can still extract ecological information from their size, orientation, attachment and distribution even when their ancestry is debated.
Tracks suggest movement and possible microbial-mat feeding
Some traces attributed to Dickinsonia indicate that the organism moved across the seafloor. Their geometry and association with the sediment have been interpreted as possible evidence of feeding on microbial mats. “Possible” is important: the trace records movement and contact with the substrate, while the precise behavior is an ecological inference rather than a direct observation of a living animal.

Burrows show that animals began modifying the sediment
Near the end of the Ediacaran, burrows made by worm-like animals show that organisms excavated sediment rather than remaining entirely on its surface. Such activity could have mixed or aerated the upper seafloor and changed conditions for neighboring organisms. Burrowing therefore records an interaction between animals and their habitat, not merely the presence of a particular worm-like body.
How Cambrian fossils document differentiated ecological roles
Cambrian fossils add evidence for active movement, feeding specialization and interactions among organisms. The Smithsonian uses several examples as ecological interpretations rather than observations of behavior in life.
Different positions in the community
- Waptia: interpreted as a scavenger or bottom forager, placing it in contact with organic material on the seafloor.
- Priapulid worms: associated with burrowing, indicating a life within sediment rather than solely on its surface.
- Wiwaxia: interpreted as attached to sponges, suggesting a close association with another seafloor organism.
- Anomalocaris: a swimmer above the seafloor, representing a mobile member of the water column rather than a stationary bottom dweller.
These examples show why fossils reveal more than a list of species. They place organisms in different parts of the water column and substrate, identify potential feeding modes and indicate that animals interacted with one another and with the seafloor. By the end of the Cambrian, the evidence is consistent with increasingly complex food webs.
Predation and habitat engineering
Active swimming structures and grasping or feeding anatomy are compatible with predatory or scavenging lifestyles, while burrows and attachment sites show that animals occupied and altered physical habitats. The Cambrian diversification was therefore not simply an explosion of new shapes. It also involved new ways of moving through, feeding in and modifying the environment.

Why exceptional preservation changes the ecological picture
Burgess Shale-type deposits preserve anatomy normally lost
Most fossil deposits emphasize mineralized shells, teeth, claws or other hard parts. In contrast, Burgess Shale-type deposits formed when organisms were buried rapidly in fine mud, preserving details of soft anatomy. The Smithsonian describes specimens that “were buried in an underwater avalanche of fine mud that preserved exceptionally fine details of the structure of their soft parts.” Its collection overview reports more than 65,000 specimens in the museum’s Burgess Shale collection; that figure is the institution’s collection count, not the total number of fossils known from the geological formation: Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, “The Burgess Shale.”
Soft tissues can reveal muscles, digestive features, appendages and body outlines that would be invisible in a hard-parts-only assemblage. This changes ecological interpretation: a site may appear to contain only a few shelled animals until unusual preservation exposes a much wider community.
Jiangchuan fossils extend soft-tissue evidence into the Ediacaran
A 2026 Natural History Museum report describes more than 700 Jiangchuan fossils dated to 554–539 million years ago. Carbon-rich films preserve rare feeding structures, digestive systems and movement-related anatomy. Some forms may represent early relatives of major animal groups, but those relationships remain interpretations rather than settled identifications.

Fezouata shows that exceptional preservation continued after the Cambrian
Soft-bodied preservation did not end with the Cambrian. Lower Ordovician Fezouata formations in Morocco contain Burgess Shale-type assemblages, demonstrating that suitable conditions occurred later as well. Van Roy and colleagues argue that the geographic distribution of these assemblages depends partly on where the right preservation conditions existed. A gap in this particular soft-body record therefore cannot, by itself, prove that a group had become extinct: Van Roy et al., “Ordovician faunas of Burgess Shale type,” Nature (2010).
What chemical biomarkers add to the fossil record
Biomarkers identify food sources that bodies may not preserve
Molecular fossils, or biomarkers, are preserved organic compounds that can point to the organisms contributing biological material to ancient sediments. In Ediacaran fossil-bearing sediments from Russia’s White Sea area, Bobrovskiy and colleagues compared algal steranes with bacterial hopanes. Their results indicate substantial algal input in the sampled environments, supporting the presence of an abundant algal food source comparable in this respect to later marine ecosystems.
The study reports an H/S ratio of 2.5–5 in fossil-associated sediments. H/S compares hopanes and steranes; it is a proxy measured in particular samples, not a direct measurement of total algal biomass or ecosystem-wide food abundance. Regional differences and preservation effects limit how broadly the result can be applied: Bobrovskiy et al., “Food sources for the Ediacara biota communities,” Nature Communications (2020).

Algal production, bacterial communities, oxygen availability, nutrient delivery, animal behavior and preservation all influence what an Ediacaran fossil site records. The White Sea biomarker result supports an important food source in those locations; it does not establish that algae alone caused the appearance or diversification of complex animals everywhere. Likewise, oxygenation and nutrient changes can be plausible contributors without constituting a single, settled explanation.

Fan Wei, whose group was quoted by the Natural History Museum, summarized the fieldwork behind the Jiangchuan finds this way: “After years of fieldwork, we finally found several sites with the right conditions where animal fossils are preserved together with abundant algae.” The observation combines biological abundance with a preservation setting, illustrating why chemistry and taphonomy must be interpreted together.

A reliable reconstruction proceeds from several independent observations rather than from one spectacular fossil.
- Establish age and setting. Researchers determine the rock’s age and whether it formed on a seafloor, in shallow water, below storm influence or in another depositional environment.
- Inventory body fossils. They record anatomy, orientation, abundance and association with other organisms, separating hard-part evidence from uncertain taxonomic assignments.
- Map traces. Tracks, burrows and resting marks are analyzed for direction, depth, repetition and relationship to sediment layers. These features provide behavioral evidence while retaining uncertainty about their maker.
- Assess preservation. Scientists ask which tissues could survive the site’s burial and chemical history. Fine mud and carbon films may preserve anatomy that coarse sediment would destroy.
- Analyze organic chemistry. Biomarkers can identify contributions from algae, bacteria or other producers when recognizable body fossils are absent.
- Compare localities. Similar ages and body forms are tested against sites on other continents and in different environments to distinguish regional ecology from broader biological patterns.
- State confidence separately for each conclusion. “Present,” “likely,” “possible” and “not detected” describe different evidentiary levels; absence from a poorly preserving deposit is not equivalent to evidence of true absence.
Comparing major evidence settings
| Locality or evidence setting | Age or context | Primary evidence | What it is especially useful for | Key bias or caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| White Sea fossil-bearing sediments | Ediacaran; Russia | Body fossils plus sterane and hopane biomarkers | Testing likely organic food sources in sampled communities | H/S values are local chemical proxies, not a global food-abundance measurement |
| Burgess Shale-type deposits | Especially Cambrian examples | Body fossils with exceptional soft-tissue detail | Reconstructing appendages, muscles and other anatomy normally lost | Requires unusual burial; ordinary assemblages may undercount soft-bodied organisms |
| Jiangchuan | 554–539 million years ago; Ediacaran | More than 700 carbon-film fossils reported in 2026 | Feeding, digestive and movement-related anatomy before the Cambrian | Some evolutionary assignments are provisional; absence elsewhere may be preservational |
| Fezouata formations, Morocco | Lower Ordovician | Burgess Shale-type soft-bodied assemblages | Showing exceptional preservation continued after the Cambrian | Distribution reflects where suitable preservation occurred, not only where organisms lived |
What fossils cannot tell us with certainty
- A complete species count: Fossilization favors some bodies, environments and burial conditions over others.
- Exact behavior from anatomy alone: A limb or mouthpart can suggest a function, but traces and associations are needed to strengthen behavioral interpretations.
- Universal conditions from one locality: Biomarker ratios and community compositions describe sampled settings and may not represent every Ediacaran ocean.
- Extinction from a record gap alone: If soft tissue is absent at a site that usually destroys it, the missing fossil may reflect taphonomy rather than biology.
- A single cause for animal diversification: Oxygen, nutrients, food supply, ecological interactions and preservation can operate together, and current evidence supports correlations and plausible mechanisms rather than one universally demonstrated cause.
Why these reconstructions matter
Early ocean fossils document a transition from communities dominated by surface-dwelling forms to ecosystems with burrowers, attached organisms, active swimmers, scavengers and possible predators. They show that animals increasingly occupied different physical spaces and changed the sediment around them. Chemical evidence adds the base of the food web, while exceptional preservation reveals anatomy that would otherwise disappear.

The central lesson is methodological: fossils do not provide a single snapshot of an ancient ocean. They provide complementary, uneven records of bodies, behavior, chemistry and burial. When those records agree, confidence in an ecological interpretation rises; when they conflict, preservation and local environment must be considered before biology is blamed.
