As the signal crosses space, free electrons delay lower radio frequencies more than higher ones. That frequency-dependent delay measures the integrated column of ionized matter between the burst and Earth.
When an FRB is precisely localized and its host galaxy has a measured redshift, astronomers can place that electron column at a known distance. Large samples then help weigh diffuse ordinary matter, map gas in galaxy halos and the intergalactic medium, investigate magnetized plasma, and estimate how feedback changes cosmic structure. Every result remains a model-dependent line-of-sight measurement: the Milky Way, the host, intervening halos and groups, and intergalactic gas all contribute.

What an FRB actually measures
An FRB is detected as a brief, unusually bright radio transient. Radio waves of different frequencies do not arrive together after traveling through a plasma. Free electrons interact more strongly with lower-frequency radiation, so those frequencies arrive later. The delay is summarized by the dispersion measure (DM), which is proportional to the total number of free electrons encountered along the path.

DM is therefore a column measurement, not a label attached to one cloud or one location. A large value does not, by itself, tell you whether the electrons are near the source, in a galaxy halo, in a group, in the Milky Way, or spread through intergalactic space.

| Path component | What it contributes | Why it is difficult to separate |
|---|---|---|
| Milky Way foreground | Electrons in the Galactic disk and halo | Its contribution varies with sky position and depends on models of Galactic gas. |
| FRB host and immediate environment | Gas in the host galaxy, star-forming regions, or a compact source environment | The local environment can dominate an individual burst and is often poorly known. |
| Intervening galaxies, halos, and groups | Ionized gas surrounding other galaxies and in galaxy groups | A sightline can cross several structures, and a cataloged galaxy does not always identify all associated gas. |
| Intergalactic medium | Diffuse electrons in the cosmic web between galaxies | This is the desired cosmological signal, but it is obtained only after the other terms are modeled statistically. |
Other propagation effects carry additional information. Pulse broadening, or scattering, indicates that small-scale density structure has redirected parts of the signal. Polarization and Faraday rotation respond to magnetic fields and the free-electron density along the path. These effects can reveal a plasma environment, but an inference from one burst is not automatically representative of the FRB population.
Why localization and redshift change the question
A burst detected by a single radio instrument may have a broad arrival direction. Interferometric observations can narrow that position enough to identify a host galaxy. Spectroscopy or other distance measurements then provide the host’s redshift. The redshift does not turn DM into a direct photograph of the intergalactic medium; it supplies the distance context needed to compare the observed electron column with models of every other contribution.
- Detect the transient. Measure the burst’s arrival time, spectrum, width, polarization, and frequency-dependent delay.
- Localize it. Use interferometric or tied-array data to reduce the position uncertainty to a specific galaxy or a manageable list of candidates.
- Identify the host. Obtain imaging and, where possible, a spectroscopic redshift for the associated galaxy.
- Model foregrounds. Estimate the Milky Way contribution and account for any known intervening galaxies, groups, or clusters.
- Infer the remaining components. Compare the residual DM with a population model that includes host, halo, and intergalactic gas, while propagating uncertainty through the calculation.
The first localized-host studies established why this combination is powerful. Without a host distance, a DM is mainly a propagation clue. With a distance and many comparable sightlines, it becomes a statistical probe of cosmic matter.
FRBs help close the missing-baryon budget
Ordinary matter is made of baryons: protons, neutrons, and the atoms and ions built from them. Cosmological observations predict a total baryon density, yet a substantial fraction is difficult to see because it is thin, hot, or not producing much light. FRB dispersion is sensitive to that ionized material even when conventional images are faint.

In a 2020 Nature study, Macquart and colleagues used localized bursts to estimate the cosmic baryon density. They reported Ωb = 0.051+0.021−0.025 h70−1 at 95% confidence. The result was described as consistent with values inferred from the cosmic microwave background and Big Bang nucleosynthesis. The uncertainty interval is essential: this was a sample-based estimate, not a claim that every electron had been assigned to a known structure or that the baryon census had zero error.
Later work has asked not only how many baryons exist, but where they reside. A 2025 Nature Astronomy analysis, titled “A gas-rich cosmic web revealed by the partitioning of the missing baryons,” reported Ωbh70 = 0.051+0.006−0.006 while partitioning contributions among the intergalactic medium, clusters, and galaxies. The definitions and modeling choices in that analysis matter when interpreting the quoted components; the number should not be extended to a different sample or cosmology without checking those choices.
These measurements are complementary to optical, ultraviolet, X-ray, microwave, and gravitational observations. FRBs do not see all phases of matter equally. Their distinctive contribution is an integrated electron count along a narrow, known line of sight.

What galaxy halos and groups add to the signal
Galaxies are surrounded by circumgalactic gas extending far beyond their bright stellar disks. Groups and clusters contain still larger reservoirs of ionized material. An FRB passing through one of these regions can acquire extra DM that would otherwise be mistaken for diffuse intergalactic gas.

Connor and Ravi analyzed 474 events from CHIME/FRB Catalog 1 in a 2022 Nature Astronomy study. They selected sightlines likely to intersect nearby galaxy halos and found a statistically significant mean DM excess. The excess may include gas associated with galaxy groups or even the Local Group, so it should not be read as a measurement of an isolated, perfectly spherical halo around one cataloged galaxy.
Halo studies turn FRBs into a census of otherwise elusive circumgalactic matter. They can test whether simulations place too much or too little gas around galaxies, examine how halo mass relates to electron content, and separate baryons in bound structures from those spread through the cosmic web. The separation is statistical because a single line of sight can cross several halos and because the host contribution remains uncertain.
Scattering and polarization reveal plasma conditions
DM counts free electrons, but it does not fully describe the medium. Scattering broadens an intrinsically short pulse when irregular electron density redirects parts of the wave. A frequency-dependent scattering tail can therefore indicate turbulent or highly structured plasma. Polarization measurements and Faraday rotation add sensitivity to magnetic fields and the orientation of magnetized material.

A 2015 study reported evidence for dense, magnetized plasma associated with an FRB. A 2022 study of a repeating FRB associated with a persistent radio source found behavior consistent with two scattering screens and a dense magnetized environment. Such observations show what propagation can reveal, but they are case studies: the source region may dominate the signal, and different bursts need not share the same screens or magnetic conditions.

Interpreting these effects requires a model of intrinsic burst structure as well as the intervening plasma. A broad pulse could result from scattering, an intrinsically long emission episode, instrumental limitations, or a combination. The strongest conclusions come from repeated observations across frequency, time, and polarization rather than from one measured width.

As the number of localized FRBs grows, astronomers can move from counting electrons to studying how baryons are distributed in space. Feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei can heat gas, expel it from galaxies, and suppress the clustering of matter on particular scales. Because FRBs sample many independent sightlines, their DMs can be compared with galaxy maps and theoretical matter-distribution models.
Sharma and colleagues reported a 2026 Nature Astronomy analysis using 114 FRBs. Within that study’s inference framework, the sample constrained spatial fluctuations in baryons, signatures of feedback in the matter power spectrum, and gas mass fractions in massive halos. Those are model-based population results, not direct measurements made by any one burst. They depend on localization, redshift completeness, foreground treatment, the assumed host-DM distribution, and the relationship between electrons and total matter.
This distinction matters for cosmology. FRBs can improve knowledge of baryonic effects that otherwise bias measurements of structure growth. They may therefore contribute to analyses involving parameters such as dark energy or neutrino masses when combined with other data, but they do not directly detect dark matter, dark energy, or neutrinos. A burst supplies a line-of-sight electron column; downstream cosmological constraints come from combining many such measurements with a physical model and complementary observations.

How FRBs compare with other cosmic probes
| Question | FRB dispersion | Other common approaches |
|---|---|---|
| Primary observable | Integrated free-electron column, expressed through DM | Emission, absorption, gravitational lensing, galaxy positions, or background-radiation anisotropies |
| Most direct sensitivity | Ionized gas along narrow sightlines, including halos, groups, and diffuse intergalactic space | Depends on the method: temperature, density, stars, total gravitating mass, or projected structure may be emphasized |
| Main modeling challenge | Host, Milky Way, intervening structures, localization, and sample selection | Instrument calibration, selection effects, temperature or mass-to-light conversions, and projection effects |
| Best-supported FRB conclusion | Baryon accounting and the distribution of ionized gas | Varies by probe; some methods constrain total matter or radiation more directly |
Using several probes together is more informative than treating any one as a complete inventory. For example, an FRB can indicate that electrons occupy a halo, while X-ray or ultraviolet data may constrain the gas temperature and ionization state. Agreement or tension between methods can expose missing physics in simulations.
What remains uncertain about the burst engines
FRB propagation can be well understood even when the source mechanism is not. Evidence linking a Galactic FRB to a soft gamma repeater supports magnetars as engines for at least some bursts. Reviews of FRB physics also discuss emission from compact-object magnetospheres and relativistic shocks. The population may contain more than one physical channel, and repeating and apparently one-off sources need not be produced identically.
Source uncertainty affects environmental interpretation. A magnetar embedded in a young supernova remnant could supply substantial host DM, scattering, and Faraday rotation. A source in a less extreme region might contribute far less. Researchers therefore avoid treating an observed DM or polarization signature as a universal property of all FRBs.
The limits readers should keep in mind
- DM is not a location marker. It is an integral over the entire path, so assigning all excess dispersion to the intergalactic medium is incorrect.
- One burst cannot deliver a complete baryon map. Host and foreground terms require assumptions, and rare environments can skew an individual sightline.
- Localization quality controls the inference. A secure host and redshift are far more useful than a rough sky position with an uncertain distance.
- Sample selection matters. Repeating sources, bright bursts, nearby hosts, and events found by a particular instrument may not represent the full population.
- Propagation effects are degenerate. Scattering, intrinsic duration, magnetic fields, and source surroundings can produce overlapping observational signatures.
- Cosmological parameters are indirect outputs. FRBs inform models of matter and gas; they do not independently measure dark energy or identify dark matter particles.
The practical path forward is a larger, better-localized sample with measured host redshifts, detailed foreground maps, repeated polarization and scattering observations, and joint analysis with galaxy, X-ray, ultraviolet, and gravitational data. Each improvement reduces the ambiguity in how a measured electron column is divided among the structures it crossed.
