Distant galaxies let astronomers study the Milky Way’s possible past by exploiting lookback time: light takes time to travel, so a galaxy seen billions of light-years away is observed as it was billions of years ago. By comparing large populations of galaxies with similar masses at different distances, researchers trace how galaxies change in size, stellar mass, star formation, structure and chemical enrichment. These comparisons reveal plausible stages in the Milky Way’s evolution, but no single distant galaxy is a photograph of our own Galaxy at an earlier date.
Why distance turns galaxy surveys into a history book
Light does not arrive instantly. When a telescope records a galaxy, it sees the light emitted when that galaxy was younger. The greater the distance, the longer the light has traveled and the farther back in cosmic history the observation reaches. Astronomers call this interval lookback time.

The method is statistical rather than cinematic. The Milky Way cannot be watched from outside while it ages, and no telescope can identify one remote object as the Milky Way’s exact ancestor. Instead, surveys select many galaxies whose stellar masses and other measurable properties resemble ours. Galaxies at several distances then provide snapshots of similar systems at different epochs. Comparing those snapshots shows which traits commonly change and supplies tests for computer models of galaxy formation.

A Hubble comparison using the 3D-HST and CANDELS surveys followed Milky Way-like systems across approximately 11 billion years. The sample is a population sequence, not a time-lapse of one galaxy. That distinction matters: galaxies can follow different paths, merge, lose gas or stop forming stars at different times.

What Hubble images show about changing size and structure
Young systems were compact and blue
In the more distant, earlier examples of Milky Way-mass systems, Hubble images commonly show compact shapes and strong blue light. Blue emission indicates that young, massive stars contribute heavily to the light. These galaxies are not necessarily miniature versions of the modern Milky Way; their appearance reflects a period when stars were forming rapidly and organized disk structure was still developing.
NASA’s summary of six Hubble snapshots places comparable systems at redshifts from z = 0.26 to z = 2.8. The high-redshift examples are smaller and more compact than later systems. As the sequence moves toward nearer, later-epoch galaxies, the systems become larger and more massive, and recognizable spiral structure appears in some examples.
Later systems became larger and more organized
The same Hubble analysis describes growth in both physical size and stellar mass over billions of years. A mature spiral galaxy contains a disk in which stars, gas and dust are arranged on larger scales, along with a central concentration of older stars. Distant snapshots indicate that structures like these were assembled progressively rather than appearing fully formed at the beginning.

The observations identify trends across a selected population. They constrain the range of histories that models must reproduce, while leaving room for individual galaxies to grow faster, merge more often or shut down star formation earlier than others.
| Observable in galaxy surveys | What it can indicate | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Physical size | Whether a system was compact or had expanded into a larger galaxy | Measurements are harder for faint, poorly resolved distant sources |
| Overall morphology | Development of disks, spiral patterns and central concentrations | A distant image may not resolve fine structure visible in the Milky Way |
| Broad color | Relative contribution of young versus older stellar populations | Color is an integrated signal, not a direct age for every star |
| Stellar mass | How much material has been converted into stars by a given epoch | Values come from population estimates and model assumptions |
How color and star formation reveal a galaxy’s life stage
Blue light traces active stellar production
Short-lived, massive stars shine strongly at blue wavelengths. When a distant galaxy appears blue in a survey composite, astronomers infer that a relatively young stellar population is contributing substantially to its light. This does not mean every star in the system is young; older stars can still be present but less dominant in the observed color.

NASA’s Hubble description identifies a high-activity phase in which the pictured galaxy formed stars at 30 times the Milky Way’s present star-formation rate. That number belongs to the specific illustrated phase and should not be treated as a universal rate for all early galaxies or as a measured rate for the Milky Way’s own past.
Redder light marks older populations in nearer examples
Nearby examples in the comparison appear redder because older stars contribute more of their total light. A redder integrated color generally signals that the burst of short-lived blue stars has weakened relative to the accumulated older population. Color therefore helps place galaxies along an evolutionary sequence, especially when combined with size, morphology and spectroscopy.
Color alone cannot determine a complete formation history. Dust can obscure blue light, and different mixtures of ages can produce similar integrated colors. Astronomers use imaging as one line of evidence rather than treating a color category as a definitive age label.
What spectra add: measuring the ingredients of galaxies
Images show a galaxy’s shape and broad colors. A spectrum spreads its light into wavelengths where atoms leave distinctive fingerprints. Those fingerprints allow astronomers to estimate chemical abundances, temperatures and rates of ongoing star formation more directly than imaging alone.
Oxygen abundance as a record of enrichment
Stars manufacture elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, and later generations inherit some of those products. Measuring oxygen and other elements therefore indicates how much chemical processing has occurred in a galaxy.

In a NASA report published in 2023, the James Webb Space Telescope examined three faint, distant galaxies seen behind the galaxy cluster SMACS 0723. Their properties connected them with nearby “green pea” galaxies, a class that can be studied in much greater detail because it is close to Earth. The farthest object in that selected group had an oxygen abundance of only 2% of the abundance measured in a galaxy like ours. This is a result for that object and study, not a universal chemical value for every early galaxy.

The measurement illustrates how spectroscopy links the distant and nearby universes. A chemically primitive distant system can be compared with a nearby analogue whose stars, gas and compact structure are easier to investigate. Such links help test models of when galaxies acquired heavier elements and how rapidly their gas reservoirs were enriched.
How the pieces fit into a Milky Way growth sequence
Combining the observations produces a broad, evidence-based outline rather than a single prescribed script:
- Compact youthful phase: At an early epoch, Milky Way-mass analogues can be small, blue and dominated by active star formation.
- High-production phase: Some systems pass through a period of exceptionally rapid stellar growth; the Hubble example described above reached 30 times the Milky Way’s present rate.
- Expansion and mass buildup: Over billions of years, the population trend is toward larger physical dimensions and greater stellar mass.
- Increasing structural organization: Later snapshots include developed disks and spiral patterns, alongside a larger share of older stars.
- Chemical enrichment: Repeated generations of stars raise the abundance of oxygen and other heavy elements, while spectra reveal how far individual systems have progressed.
These stages overlap in real galaxies. A merger can disturb a disk, trigger a new burst of star formation or add stars from another system. Consequently, the sequence is best understood as a set of commonly observed transitions and not as a guaranteed itinerary for the Milky Way.
What simulations contribute to the story
Observations show what galaxies look like at different epochs; simulations explore physical processes that could produce those observations. Models include gas inflow, star formation, stellar feedback, mergers and the buildup of dark-matter haloes. Researchers compare simulated galaxies with Hubble images and other survey measurements to see which assumptions reproduce the observed distribution of sizes, masses and structures.

A NASA Advanced Supercomputing project reported that the stellar halo of one modeled Milky Way-like galaxy contained stars originating in nearly 100 merged or accreted galaxies. This is a simulation result for one modeled system, not a direct census of the Milky Way’s actual merger history. It demonstrates why the Milky Way’s outer halo can preserve evidence of past assembly: stars brought in by smaller galaxies can remain distributed around the main disk long after the original mergers.
Simulation comparisons also clarify why a population approach is necessary. A model can generate many plausible histories, while surveys show how common particular outcomes are. Agreement between the two narrows the range of viable explanations; disagreement identifies processes that need revision.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What distant galaxies cannot establish on their own
- They cannot identify the Milky Way’s unique ancestor. Similar mass and appearance do not prove that a particular remote galaxy will evolve into, or once was, our Galaxy.
- They cannot provide a complete time-lapse. Each distance samples a different object, and the sample may omit less common evolutionary paths.
- They cannot reveal every fine detail of structure. Distant galaxies are faint and less sharply resolved than the Milky Way, so small-scale features can be hidden.
- They cannot make color a standalone age measurement. Dust and mixtures of stellar ages can affect integrated colors.
- They cannot turn a model into a direct observation. A simulated merger history, including the nearly 100 progenitors in one halo model, remains model-specific.
For these reasons, astronomers use calibrated language such as “suggest,” “trace,” “support” and “constrain.” The strongest conclusions emerge when imaging, spectroscopy, local observations of the Milky Way and simulations point in the same direction.
Why Webb observations refine rather than overturn the picture
Webb extends studies of early galaxies with greater infrared sensitivity and detailed spectroscopy. NASA describes its galaxy-evolution program as addressing early galaxy formation, stellar populations, the production of heavier elements and the effects of mergers. The resulting data can expose objects and chemical conditions that earlier surveys could not characterize.
“We’ve never observed the distant, early universe in the detail that Webb is showing us, and so we are seeing new things and asking new questions we are still working to solve, which is exciting, but they have not contradicted our current best models,” said Macarena Garcia Marin, a Webb project scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute.
The point is methodological: a new observation can add an unusual galaxy, improve a chemical measurement or reveal a structure that models must explain without invalidating the broader population trends established by Hubble and other surveys.
James Rhoads of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center described the value of the chemical connection this way:
“With detailed chemical fingerprints of these early galaxies, we see that they include what might be the most primitive galaxy identified so far. At the same time, we can connect these galaxies from the dawn of the universe to similar ones nearby, which we can study in much greater detail.”

How scientists reconstruct the Milky Way itself
Distant analogues provide the outside perspective that the Milky Way lacks, but they are only one part of the reconstruction. Astronomers combine them with measurements of stars in our own Galaxy, the motions and chemistry of the stellar halo, the ages of stellar populations, and simulations of mergers and gas accretion.
The result is a constrained family of histories. Distant surveys indicate what Milky Way-mass systems commonly looked like at earlier times; local measurements reveal the specific structures and chemical patterns preserved in our Galaxy; simulations test whether proposed assembly paths can produce both. No single evidence stream supplies the complete answer.
The practical takeaway
Distant galaxies reveal that Milky Way-like systems generally grow in stellar mass and size, evolve from compact blue star-forming states toward larger systems with older populations and developed spiral structure, and become chemically richer as generations of stars process their gas. Hubble imaging supplies the long population sequence, spectroscopy measures the changing ingredients, and simulations connect those patterns to mergers and other physical processes.
The evidence describes what the Milky Way’s evolution could plausibly have looked like, not a literal photograph of its past. Its detailed history must be reconstructed by combining distant-galaxy comparisons with observations inside the Milky Way and with model-specific tests.
