You can, however, lower your risk by identifying the forest-risk commodity in a product, asking who produced it and where, and checking whether the evidence applies to that specific item. Start with cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, rubber, soy and wood, then examine products made from them, including chocolate, furniture, printed paper and some personal-care goods.
The most reliable approach is to combine demand reduction or substitution with product-level traceability. Treat company-wide promises and generic “sustainable” language as a starting point for questions, not proof that an individual product is deforestation-free.

Which commodities and products deserve the closest scrutiny?
Forest loss is associated with commodity production, but the presence of an ingredient does not prove that a particular item caused deforestation. The list below is a practical screening map based on the commodities and derived products covered by European Union rules; it is not an exhaustive list of every risky product or a claim that all goods in a category have the same impact.
| Commodity family | Consumer products that may contain it | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Cattle | Beef, leather shoes, bags, belts and furniture upholstery | Where were the animals raised and slaughtered? Can the seller trace the material to the production area? |
| Cocoa | Chocolate, cocoa powder, biscuits and confectionery | What country and production area supplied the cocoa in this product? |
| Coffee | Whole beans, ground coffee, instant coffee and ready-to-drink coffee | Is the origin identified beyond a broad region, and what verification covers this lot or product? |
| Palm oil | Some packaged foods, soaps, cosmetics and other personal-care products | Which palm-derived ingredient is used, and does the evidence cover this ingredient and product rather than only the company? |
| Rubber | Tyres, footwear, gloves and rubber components | Can the supplier identify the natural-rubber origin and production area? |
| Soy | Tofu, soy oil, processed foods and animal feed used for meat, dairy and eggs | Is the soy direct or feed soy, and can its origin and deforestation-free status be demonstrated? |
| Wood | Furniture, flooring, paper, books, packaging, fibreboard and particleboard | What species and country supplied the wood fibre, and how is the finished product traced through processing? |
Highly processed goods can be harder to investigate than a bag of beans or a piece of lumber. European guidance specifically notes difficulties identifying origin and geolocation for paper, fibreboard, particleboard and highly processed cocoa foods. Covered businesses still have to collect the required information; difficulty is not an exemption for a consumer claim.

A practical shopping process
1. Identify the relevant commodity
Read the ingredient list, materials statement or product description. For a chocolate bar, the relevant commodity is cocoa; for a leather sofa, it is cattle; for a notebook, it is wood fibre. Animal products may involve more than one pathway: beef can be linked to cattle directly, while poultry, pork, dairy and eggs can involve soy in feed. If the composition is unclear, ask the retailer or manufacturer which forest-risk commodities are present.
2. Decide whether you can reduce or substitute demand
Using less of a forest-risk commodity removes the need to resolve an uncertain supply chain. Examples include buying fewer products with unnecessary paper packaging, choosing durable furniture instead of frequent replacement, or substituting a product when its seller cannot explain its origin. This is a personal risk-reduction choice, not proof that the alternative has no environmental impacts.
3. Ask for product-specific origin information
Contact the brand or retailer with questions that require a concrete answer:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- What country produced the commodity in this product?
- Can you trace it to the farm, forest management unit or other production area?
- For a blended product, which origins are included and how are they kept identifiable?
- What definition and cutoff date does the seller use for “deforestation-free”?
A country name alone is weaker than a traceable production area. For commodities that are mixed during transport or processing, ask how the company connects the information to the item you are considering.
4. Examine the evidence behind the claim
Ask what standard, audit, monitoring system or other verification supports the statement, who performed the verification and when it was conducted. Then ask whether the evidence covers the exact product, batch or ingredient, or merely describes a corporate commitment. A promise to eliminate deforestation from future sourcing is different from evidence about the goods already on a shelf.

5. Check what the claim leaves out
Look for the commodity covered, geographic scope, production date, cutoff date and treatment of suppliers that do not provide data. “Responsible sourcing” may address labor, climate or legality without establishing that land was not recently cleared. A claim about one ingredient does not automatically cover packaging, animal feed or another commodity in the same product.
6. Keep a record when the purchase matters
For expensive furniture, a large paper order or a regular household staple, save the product page and the seller’s written response. If the answer is vague, compare another seller using the same questions. Consistent, product-level answers are more useful than a prominent logo whose criteria and coverage are not explained.

How to compare suppliers and environmental claims
There is no evidence in the available sources that one consumer logo universally proves a product is deforestation-free. Compare claims using the same five questions rather than assuming that a label settles the issue.
| Comparison axis | Stronger answer | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Commodity covered | The seller names the specific commodity and ingredient or material. | The claim refers only to “nature,” “green” or “sustainable” products. |
| Origin and traceability | Production country and, where feasible, a farm, forest unit or other production-area reference are provided. | Only the headquarters country or a broad continent is named. |
| Deforestation-free definition | The cutoff date and meaning of “deforestation-free” are stated. | No date or definition is published. |
| Verification | The method, evidence and independent verifier are identified. | The seller asks consumers to trust an unsupported assertion. |
| Scope of evidence | The evidence is tied to the product, ingredient, batch or stated supply volume. | Only a company-wide aspiration or annual target is shown. |
These tests do not create a guarantee where none exists. They help distinguish a measurable sourcing statement from language that cannot be checked.
Why traceability is difficult
Mixed and changing supply chains
Commodities can be aggregated at farms, mills, ports, warehouses and factories. A manufacturer may buy from multiple origins, change suppliers between production runs or combine materials in a finished item. Ask how the company prevents compliant and unknown material from being treated as interchangeable.

Processed products hide the original material
Paper and board can pass through several processors before becoming a book or package. Cocoa can be transformed into liquor, butter, powder and then a finished food. The further processing goes, the more important it is for a seller to explain its chain-of-custody or geolocation method.
Data is not standardized
Different suppliers may use different definitions, maps, dates and audit procedures. Two products can both claim traceability while providing very different levels of detail. Compare the underlying data and verification, not just identical words on the front of a package.
Legality is not the same as zero deforestation
A product can comply with local production law and still raise a separate question about forest conversion. Conversely, a private environmental promise may not establish legal compliance. Ask the seller to distinguish legality, land rights, deforestation and other environmental criteria.
What the European Union rules mean for shoppers
The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) places due-diligence duties on operators and traders that place covered goods on the EU market, make them available there or export them. Businesses must establish that listed commodities and derived products are deforestation-free and produced in accordance with relevant laws. The obligation is on businesses, not on consumers to perform a legal investigation for every purchase.
| Business or product timing stated by the European Commission | Application date |
|---|---|
| Large and medium operators, plus micro and small operators already subject to the EU Timber Regulation | 30 December 2026 |
| Other micro and small operators | 30 June 2027 |
| Products added by Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/2102 | 30 December 2027 |
These dates describe regulatory implementation, not a promise that every item in every shop is already verified. The Commission’s implementation information can change, so businesses and consumers should check the current official page when a purchase or compliance decision depends on a date. The regulation’s product list is specific; it should not be treated as a universal certification of all goods containing wood, soy, palm oil or another related ingredient.

What is happening in Great Britain?
Material published by the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in June 2026 described proposed Great Britain rules for forest-risk commodities. The policy direction includes due-diligence requirements for businesses above a stated turnover threshold, but consultation and further guidance remain relevant. These proposals are not the same instrument as the EUDR and should not be presented as an in-force, product-by-product consumer guarantee. A Great Britain shopper should ask a seller which voluntary evidence it currently has and whether any legal requirement actually applies to that business and product.
Which commodities have been most associated with EU-linked deforestation?
European Commission analysis reproduced by the Council of the European Union estimated the following rounded shares for 2008–2017 of deforestation linked to EU consumption of the seven goods covered in that analysis:
| Commodity | Rounded share |
|---|---|
| Palm oil | 35% |
| Soy | 33% |
| Wood | 9% |
| Cocoa | 8% |
| Coffee | 7% |
| Beef | 5% |
| Rubber | 3% |
These are historical, EU-linked figures for 2008–2017, not current global commodity shares or a ranking of the risk of every product sold today. They are useful for deciding where to ask questions first, especially about palm oil and soy, but they do not determine whether a particular brand or item is responsible for forest loss.
Applying the questions to everyday purchases
Chocolate and cocoa foods
Ask for the cocoa’s country and production-area traceability, the cutoff date used for deforestation claims and the verification covering the finished product. A general statement about a confectionery company does not automatically cover every cocoa ingredient or supplier.
Furniture, books and paper goods
Ask which wood species and countries are included, how fibre is tracked through pulping or board production and whether the evidence covers the exact item. Be especially cautious with fibreboard, particleboard and composite products, where origin can be difficult to identify.
Best Value
Personal-care products containing palm derivatives
Identify the palm-derived ingredient rather than assuming that “palm-oil-free” wording covers every derivative or the whole formula. Ask whether sourcing evidence is specific to that ingredient and whether the claim includes the production period relevant to the product.
Meat, dairy and eggs
For cattle products, ask about the cattle production origin. For products whose animals may have been fed soy, ask whether the seller tracks feed soy and what evidence supports that claim. Direct and feed-related commodity pathways should not be treated as identical.
Coffee and rubber goods
For coffee, request origin information beyond a generic regional description. For tyres, shoes and other rubber goods, ask whether the natural-rubber component is traceable and whether the claim applies to the finished product or only to a supplier policy.

- Identify the commodity or commodities in the product.
- Prefer a lower-demand or longer-lasting option when sourcing information is unavailable.
- Ask for country and production-area origin.
- Ask for the deforestation-free definition and cutoff date.
- Ask who verified the claim and what evidence was checked.
- Confirm that the evidence covers the specific product, ingredient or material.
- Check how mixed or processed inputs are handled.
- Record important answers and compare sellers on the same criteria.
This process cannot eliminate uncertainty from global supply chains, but it directs your money toward sellers that can explain their sourcing and makes unsupported environmental language easier to recognize.
