What Can a Fast Radio Burst Tell Us About the Space Between Galaxies?

A fast radio burst (FRB) is a millisecond-scale radio pulse from beyond the Milky Way that acts as a backlight for otherwise hard-to-see plasma. As the pulse crosses ionized gas, lower radio frequencies arrive later than higher frequencies. That delay measures the total column of free electrons along the route, allowing astronomers to estimate how much ionized matter lies between the source and Earth.

The measurement is cumulative rather than pictorial: one FRB does not show the exact position of every cloud. But when a burst is localized, its host galaxy and redshift are identified, and many sightlines are combined, FRBs reveal diffuse intergalactic gas, galaxy halos, clusters and the larger cosmic web.

What an FRB actually measures

The useful signal is dispersion. A burst starts as a short broadband pulse, but plasma slows its lower-frequency components more than its higher-frequency components. The farther the pulse travels through free electrons, the larger the frequency-dependent delay becomes. Astronomers summarize that delay with the dispersion measure (DM), an integral of electron density along the entire line of sight:

DM = ∫ ne dl

In plain language, DM is an electron column, not a photograph. It tells you how many free electrons the pulse encountered in total, weighted by the path length, but not whether a particular contribution came from a nearby halo, a distant filament or the burst’s own surroundings. This distinction is central to interpreting every FRB-based claim about intergalactic space. The propagation physics and its cosmological uses are reviewed in Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Because the space between galaxies is extremely tenuous, an individual cloud may be nearly invisible in an ordinary image. A long extragalactic path can nevertheless accumulate a measurable electron column. An FRB therefore turns a transient source into a probe of matter that emits little or no light.

How astronomers turn one pulse into a distance and matter measurement

  1. Detect and characterize the burst. Radio instruments measure the arrival-time sweep across frequency and fit the pulse’s dispersion. That produces the total observed DM.
  2. Localize the source. Interferometric timing or follow-up observations narrow the burst to a position on the sky. A position accurate enough for optical or infrared imaging is much more useful than an unlocalized detection.
  3. Identify the host galaxy and measure its redshift. The host redshift supplies distance and cosmic-time context. It also establishes that the burst is extragalactic rather than a Galactic radio event.
  4. Model foreground contributions. Astronomers estimate the Milky Way’s disk and halo contribution, then account for plasma near the burst and inside its host galaxy. These terms are not known perfectly.
  5. Interpret the remainder. The residual DM is compared with models of diffuse intergalactic gas, galaxy halos, groups and clusters along the route. For a single sightline, the result is an estimate with substantial uncertainty; for a population, the distribution of DMs becomes a statistical test of where baryons reside.

A secure host-redshift association is therefore more than a naming exercise. Without it, distance and intervening matter are entangled: a high DM could indicate a more distant burst, a denser host environment, additional foreground structure, or several effects at once. Even with a host, the 2019 review notes that host and intergalactic contributions cannot be separated perfectly, so DM-derived distances remain uncertain.

Which parts of the route contribute to the dispersion measure?

Component What it represents Why it matters
Milky Way Free electrons in our Galaxy’s disk and halo. This foreground must be modeled before attributing the remaining column to extragalactic space.
FRB environment Plasma close to the source, such as material associated with its local surroundings. A dense local environment can raise DM without adding information about the broad cosmic web.
Host galaxy Ionized gas inside the galaxy that produced the burst. Host morphology, orientation and local gas content vary, making this contribution difficult to predict precisely.
Intervening galaxies and halos Gas in galaxies, circumgalactic halos, groups and clusters between host and Milky Way. These structures can add discrete features to a sightline and connect the FRB to known large-scale structure.
Diffuse intergalactic medium Low-density ionized gas spread through the cosmic web. This is the component that is especially difficult to see directly and a major target of FRB cosmology.

The measured DM is the sum of these terms. Treating the total as though it belonged entirely to the intergalactic medium would overstate what a burst proves. Conversely, removing too much for the host or Milky Way would make the inferred intergalactic column artificially large. Robust analyses therefore carry uncertainties for each contribution rather than applying a single universal subtraction.

Why localization and host redshift are decisive

Localization provides the connection between a radio pulse and a specific galaxy. Once that galaxy’s redshift is measured, astronomers know the source’s approximate distance and the amount of cosmic expansion experienced by the signal. The DM can then be compared with the distance expected from models of ionized matter.

This comparison is not a direct ruler. The same total electron column can be produced by different arrangements of gas, and host environments differ from one burst to another. A localized sample is valuable because each sightline has a known endpoint and can be cross-matched with galaxy catalogs, cluster maps and other observations. Over many bursts, random host variations can be modeled while coherent excesses associated with foreground structures become more apparent.

Can an FRB reveal what it passed through on the way to Earth?

Yes, but as a line-of-sight imprint rather than an image. If an FRB’s signal carries more dispersion than expected from the Milky Way, host and diffuse-background models, the excess can indicate intervening plasma. When the sightline crosses a known or newly identified structure, its gas can leave a measurable signature in the total propagation delay.

Case study: FRB 20240304B

NASA reported on October 8, 2026 (updated October 9) that the James Webb Space Telescope helped identify the host of FRB 20240304B and measured a redshift of 2.148. The burst occurred when the universe was roughly 3 billion years old. The signal also carried evidence of two structures along its route: a previously unknown galaxy cluster at redshift 0.3, about 3.5 billion light-years away, and the nearby Virgo Cluster, about 54 million light-years away. The details are in NASA’s account, “Webb Measures Distance to Farthest Fast Radio Burst, Suggesting Origin.”

Those findings do not mean the burst produced a photograph of either cluster. They mean that the propagation data contain an imprint consistent with material encountered along the route. As J. Xavier Prochaska of the University of California, Santa Cruz, told NASA: “A fast radio burst is almost like a cosmic flashlight. It lights up everything along the path. It carries an imprint of everything that it travels through, so you can use it to trace the ‘cosmic web’ – the otherwise invisible matter and structures that it encounters along the way.”

The burst’s engine remains an open astrophysical question, and that uncertainty is separate from the propagation measurement. Manisha Caleb of the University of Sydney, the study’s lead author, told NASA: “What makes fast radio bursts interesting is that we don’t know what generates them. We have theories for what objects produce them, but we don’t have conclusive proof.” The unknown source mechanism does not erase the information accumulated after the radio pulse leaves its source.

How FRBs help investigate the missing-baryon problem

Cosmology predicts a substantial amount of ordinary matter—baryons—in the universe, yet much of it is not concentrated in bright stars or easily detected galaxies. Free electrons in diffuse gas are one way to account for that otherwise hard-to-see matter. FRB DMs provide repeated measurements of electron columns through different cosmic environments, allowing researchers to compare the inferred baryon content of the intergalactic medium, clusters and galaxies.

A 2025 Nature Astronomy paper, “A gas-rich cosmic web revealed by the partitioning of the missing baryons,” reported an FRB-based late-universe baryon-density result of Ωb h70 = 0.051 ± 0.006. That dimensionless value follows the paper’s stated convention. The study also partitioned the inferred matter among the intergalactic medium, clusters and galaxies. It is a result of that study’s sample and modeling, not a measurement that removes every uncertainty in host gas, feedback or baryon phases.

An independent early analysis, FLIMFLAM DR1: The First Constraints on the Cosmic Baryon Distribution from Eight Fast Radio Burst Sight Lines, used eight FRB sightlines to place initial constraints on the cosmic baryon distribution. Its abstract states that the uncertainties remained too broad to constrain most galaxy-feedback models. The practical lesson is that FRBs have made the missing matter measurable, but the precision of the partition still depends on more localized bursts, better host modeling and broader sightline coverage.

What different kinds of FRB evidence establish

Evidence type What is comparatively strong What remains uncertain
Localized Webb case A specific host redshift and identifiable structures along one route, including the cluster at redshift 0.3 and Virgo. One sightline cannot determine the universal baryon budget or uniquely assign every electron to a particular structure.
2025 Nature Astronomy analysis A reported late-universe Ωb h70 estimate and a statistical partition among intergalactic gas, clusters and galaxies. The quoted uncertainty and assumptions do not make host, feedback and phase-separation uncertainties disappear.
FLIMFLAM DR1 Initial constraints from eight FRB sightlines demonstrate the population approach. The abstract reports uncertainties too broad to constrain most galaxy-feedback models.

What a single FRB cannot tell you

  • It cannot locate every electron. DM integrates the entire path, so different gas distributions can produce the same value.
  • It cannot cleanly separate source and foreground plasma by itself. Milky Way, host, local and intervening contributions overlap in the total measurement.
  • It is not a direct image of a filament or cluster. A structure is inferred from propagation effects and comparisons with its known position or with statistical models.
  • It does not measure all forms of matter equally. The observable is free electrons, so neutral gas and matter that contributes no free electrons require other evidence or modeling.
  • It does not settle the missing-baryon problem in one observation. The Nature Astronomy result and FLIMFLAM constraints are quantitative progress, while their uncertainties define what remains unresolved.

How to evaluate an FRB claim about intergalactic space

When reading a new result, check the following before treating a DM as a measurement of the space between galaxies:

  • Host certainty: Was the burst securely localized and associated with a galaxy whose redshift is measured?
  • Foreground treatment: How were the Milky Way disk and halo modeled?
  • Host assumptions: Did the analysis allow for variation in the host galaxy and the immediate source environment?
  • Sightline count: Is the claim based on one route, eight routes, or a much larger population?
  • Type of inference: Is it a direct detection of an intervening structure on one sightline, or a statistical estimate of baryon distribution?
  • Uncertainty: Are the quoted error bars carried through the host, foreground and intergalactic components?

The strongest conclusions combine accurate localization, a measured host redshift, independent knowledge of foreground structures and a sample large enough to distinguish cosmic trends from unusual host environments. Under those conditions, FRBs function as passable beacons: their brief signals expose the integrated plasma between galaxies and, collectively, reveal how ordinary matter is arranged across the cosmic web.
