A UCLA research prototype called PhoneBot can walk on a flat surface, track a person with its camera, turn its phone-equipped upper body, and stand back up after falling face-down. The often-quoted $400 figure is an estimate for the robot hardware only; it excludes the smartphone and does not represent a verified retail price for a finished consumer robot. PhoneBot has no arms, so it cannot pick up objects or perform household manipulation.
PhoneBot at a glance
PhoneBot is a 48.3-centimeter, 1.8-kilogram biped developed by UCLA researchers Ruochen Hou, Quanyou Wang, Daniel Koh and Dennis W. Hong. - 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
The preprint identifies 13 DYNAMIXEL XL430-W250-T servos as the actuators and lists $23.90 per actuator. At that cited figure, the 13 motors alone total $310.70 before the frame, battery, electronics, single-board computer and other parts. The $23.90 value is the paper’s component figure, not a current marketplace quotation, so real replacement or reproduction costs can differ.
A buyer therefore should not read “$400 humanoid robot” as “a complete $400 robot delivered to your door.” The estimate excludes the handset and does not establish packaging, labor, shipping, software support or a retail channel. The project is presented as an open-source platform for education, research and rapid prototyping rather than a finished household product.
How the smartphone actually powers the system
“Phone-powered” describes the phone’s unusually large role, but it does not mean that every computation and every control signal stays inside the handset. The phone is mounted on the torso and has no physical electrical connection to the robot hardware.
What runs on the phone
- The camera supplies visual input for human detection, pose estimation and person-following behavior.
- The inertial measurement unit (IMU) supplies motion and orientation data.
- The Android application runs the reported locomotion-policy inference, vision functions and visual-inertial mapping functions on the tested devices.
- Wi-Fi carries joint-position targets from the phone to the robot’s small single-board computer.
- The touchscreen provides a user interface, while wireless networking supports communication and telepresence-style use.
What remains outside the phone
The small onboard computer communicates with the servo motors. It receives targets over Wi-Fi and handles the hardware-side motor link. This arrangement means the phone is the main sensing and high-level computing unit, but the robot still needs an onboard computer for motor communication.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
The reported voice pipeline is even less phone-only. The phone records speech, while speech-to-text using whisper.cpp and the large-language-model processing run on an external laptop. The generated answer is sent back for text-to-speech through the phone speaker. A demonstration that includes voice interaction therefore depends on that laptop unless a builder substitutes a different backend.
What PhoneBot has physically demonstrated
Walking on a flat surface
The researchers deployed a learned walking policy on the physical robot. Training and evaluation described in the paper concern flat terrain. That is a meaningful bipedal demonstration, but it does not establish stable walking over stairs, grass, loose ground, thresholds or other uneven surfaces.
Tracking and looking at a person
The phone camera runs human detection and pose-estimation functions. Those visual signals support person tracking and look-at behavior; Tech Xplore describes the physical demonstration as the robot tracking a person. The result is a mobile sensing and following behavior, not evidence that the robot can understand every scene or navigate a home autonomously.

Recovering from a face-down fall
A separate stand-up policy was physically demonstrated from a face-down position. This shows that the robot can execute a recovery motion after that particular fall configuration. It should not be generalized to every possible collision, entanglement or landing posture.

Turning the sensing platform
The 13-joint lower body includes a torso-yaw actuator. It can rotate the mounted phone and camera while the feet remain planted, allowing the robot to redirect its sensing direction without stepping.
Telepresence and filming as platform uses
The paper lists telepresence and filming among the platform’s capabilities. These are supported use cases for a phone-equipped mobile platform. They are not reports of an autonomous household task such as finding an item, carrying it or completing a chore.
Voice interaction with a qualification
PhoneBot supports spoken interaction in the reported system, but the complete chain is not self-contained in the phone: external-laptop processing handles speech recognition and the language model. The phone remains the microphone, speaker and user-facing device in that workflow.

No arms or hands
PhoneBot has a lower body and a torso-mounted phone, but no arms. The demonstrated prototype therefore cannot grasp, carry, open, press, manipulate or otherwise handle household objects. Calling it humanoid refers to its bipedal research form, not to human-equivalent manipulation.

No established uneven-terrain walking
The walking policy was trained for flat terrain. Uneven-ground locomotion is identified as future work, so the available evidence does not support claims about stairs, ramps, outdoor paths or cluttered floors.
Limited payload and vigorous motion
The researchers identify the low-cost actuators as a constraint on payload and vigorous movement. The paper does not establish a consumer payload rating, lifting capacity or safe carrying limit; adding equipment or expecting forceful motion would require engineering validation.
Not a fully standalone conversational robot
The reported voice-and-language workflow uses an external laptop. In addition, the onboard single-board computer remains part of the motor-control chain. The phone is central, but “the smartphone is the robot’s sole brain” would be inaccurate.

| Phone tested | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Honor 9 (2017) | Supported the core reported functions; mapping did not work in the reported United States setup because required Google services were unavailable. |
| Moto G (2025) | Supported the core sensing, communication, inference, vision and interaction functions reported in the paper. |
| Samsung Galaxy A16 5G | Supported the core functions reported in the application evaluation. |
| Moto G (2024) | Supported the core functions reported in the application evaluation. |
All four devices handled the core IMU sensing, motor communication, policy inference, vision and human-robot interaction functions described by the authors. The results suggest that a recent flagship is not required for those tested functions, but they do not guarantee compatibility with every Android phone. Android version, camera and sensor support, wireless behavior and access to required Google services can affect the result.
What building or reproducing the platform would involve
PhoneBot is intended as an open-source research and education platform. A reproduction would need the mechanical structure, 13 specified servos, battery and electronics, a compatible Android phone, the small computer that links Wi-Fi commands to the motors, and the software stack. The handset is not an optional cosmetic screen: it supplies the camera, IMU, wireless link, interface and much of the inference workload.
- Provide a compatible Android phone and mount it securely on the torso.
- Assemble the 13-joint lower body using the actuator type identified in the preprint.
- Install the robot-side electronics and single-board computer so it can communicate with every servo.
- Run the Android application and connect it to the robot over Wi-Fi.
- Validate motor communication and standing behavior before attempting walking-policy deployment.
- Keep a computer available if using the reported speech-to-text and language-model interaction path.
Those steps describe the architecture, not a guaranteed beginner build sequence. The published material does not provide a retail kit, a consumer support program or a universal phone compatibility list.

The strongest evidence is task-specific: the authors report physical walking, person tracking and face-down recovery, alongside simulation work used during locomotion-policy development. Each result depends on the tested hardware, software and environment. A successful flat-floor walk does not imply all-terrain mobility, and person tracking does not imply autonomous navigation or object understanding.
The paper’s abstract calls PhoneBot “a low-cost, open-source humanoid robot platform that repurposes commodity smartphones as its primary sensing and computing unit.” It also describes the hardware and software as open source for “education, research, and rapid prototyping.” Those statements explain the project’s purpose: making experiments reproducible and lowering the entry cost for robotics work, rather than selling a finished domestic assistant.
Because the technical source is a version 1 preprint submitted October 6, 2026, the performance figures should be attributed to the authors’ reported experiments. The available sources do not document independent replication, a retail launch or a consumer-readiness assessment.
Bottom line for a prospective user
If your question is whether a roughly $400 robot can already walk and use a phone as its eyes and high-level computer, PhoneBot is a genuine example. It can walk on the tested flat surface, follow a person visually, rotate its sensing platform and recover from a face-down fall. If your question is whether $400 buys a self-contained household humanoid, the answer is no: the phone is extra, the motor-control computer remains necessary, the reported voice backend uses a laptop, the robot has no arms, and uneven-ground walking has not been demonstrated.
