Divide the station’s usable watt-hours by an appliance’s average power draw to get a first estimate: runtime in hours ≈ available Wh ÷ average watts. In practice, inverter losses, standby consumption, reserve settings, temperature, battery condition and changing loads reduce the result. A station also needs enough continuous and startup power for the appliance, regardless of how much energy remains in its battery.
What “2 kWh” means
One kilowatt-hour equals 1,000 watt-hours. A station marketed as 2 kWh therefore has about 2,000 Wh of nominal stored energy. The EcoFlow DELTA 2 Max is a useful real-world example: its manufacturer lists a 2,048 Wh capacity and 2,400 W AC output. The capacity is the amount of energy stored in the battery under the product’s specification; it is not a promise that a 2,048 Wh load will run for exactly one hour or that every watt-hour can be delivered to an AC outlet.

Power and energy are different measurements. Watts (W) describe the rate at which a device consumes or receives power. Watt-hours (Wh) describe how much energy is used over time. A 100 W device running continuously for 10 hours consumes about 1,000 Wh. A 1,000 W device consumes that same amount in about one hour, before conversion losses and other overhead.

If you use 2,000 Wh and a steady 100 W load, the arithmetic is 2,000 ÷ 100 = 20 hours. That is a scale illustration, not a tested runtime. The usable energy at the outlet is lower than the nominal battery figure, and many appliances do not draw a constant amount of power.
Why the simple calculation often overstates runtime
AC conversion and inverter overhead
When an appliance uses an AC outlet, the battery’s DC energy passes through an inverter. That conversion consumes energy, as does the inverter’s own electronics. The station can also draw a small amount while powered on with little or no load. These losses mean a 2,000 Wh battery does not normally provide 2,000 Wh of appliance output.
Reserve settings and battery limits
Power stations may stop before the battery display reaches an absolute zero to protect the cells or preserve a reserve. The amount available can also change with temperature, battery age and operating conditions. Treat the formula as a starting point and leave a margin for the conditions in which you will actually use the station.
Loads that cycle or change
Refrigerators, freezers, pumps and heating devices switch on and off. A refrigerator’s compressor may draw several hundred watts while running, then draw almost nothing while it is between cycles. For those appliances, average energy use over several hours is more useful than the running-watt figure printed on a label. A microwave or kettle, by contrast, usually draws high power for a short, clearly defined period.

Startup surges
Motors and compressors can demand a brief surge when they start. A station may have enough total energy for a refrigerator yet fail to start its compressor if the inverter’s surge rating is too low. Always check both the appliance’s starting requirement and the station’s continuous and surge output ratings.
Manufacturer examples from a 2,048 Wh station
EcoFlow’s US product page for the DELTA 2 Max lists the following single-appliance runtimes. They are the manufacturer’s estimates for that station and its example appliances, not universal guarantees for every 2 kWh model or every appliance with the same name.
| Example appliance | Published runtime | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 14 hours | A cycling load; actual time depends on compressor duty cycle, temperature and door openings. |
| Wi-Fi router | 97 hours | Low, relatively steady consumption; network equipment and attached devices change the draw. |
| Television | 15 hours | Depends on screen size, brightness, audio equipment and standby behavior. |
| Microwave | 1.3 hours | High-power heating load; this is cumulative operating time, not necessarily one uninterrupted session. |
| Blender | 3.3 hours | Usually used intermittently, so the station could support many short blending sessions. |
| Washing machine | 3.3 hours | Cycle length and heating or spin phases determine the real energy use. |
| Portable fridge | 29 hours | Insulation, ambient temperature and compressor cycling have a large effect. |
| Coffee maker | 1.6 hours | Heating elements consume substantial power while active. |
| Projector | 25 hours | Brightness mode, speakers and connected equipment affect the load. |
The table is best used for understanding relative scale. It does not mean that any 2,048 Wh station will produce those times, nor that combining several appliances preserves each individual estimate. Running a refrigerator, router and television together increases the average load and shortens the shared runtime.
What the wattage math looks like
Using 2,000 Wh as a simple nominal figure gives these arithmetic estimates for steady loads:

| Steady load | Nominal calculation | Result before losses |
|---|---|---|
| 50 W | 2,000 ÷ 50 | 40 hours |
| 100 W | 2,000 ÷ 100 | 20 hours |
| 300 W | 2,000 ÷ 300 | 6.7 hours |
| 500 W | 2,000 ÷ 500 | 4 hours |
| 1,000 W | 2,000 ÷ 1,000 | 2 hours |
| 2,000 W | 2,000 ÷ 2,000 | 1 hour |
These values are calculations from a nominal 2,000 Wh capacity. They exclude inverter losses, standby draw, reserve capacity and any change in the appliance’s demand. A 2,048 Wh model would produce slightly larger nominal results, but that difference should not be treated as a guaranteed extra runtime at the outlet.
How to estimate your own appliance’s runtime
- Find the appliance’s real average draw. Use a watt meter where possible, or use the device’s energy label and typical duty cycle. For a refrigerator, measure over a representative period rather than relying only on the compressor’s running wattage.
- Check the station’s usable energy. Start with the manufacturer’s capacity, then account for the fact that AC output is lower than nominal battery energy. If the manufacturer publishes an output-based runtime table, use its assumptions.
- Calculate a first estimate. Divide available Wh by average W. For example, 1,500 Wh available to a 150 W average load gives about 10 hours before additional uncertainty.
- Add a practical margin. Allow for inverter overhead, standby consumption, temperature, aging and periods when the appliance draws more than its stated average.
- Verify output compatibility. Confirm that the station’s continuous AC rating exceeds the appliance’s operating requirement and that its surge rating can handle startup.
- Test before an emergency. Run the intended setup while you can monitor it. Record the station’s watt display, battery percentage and elapsed time so you know how the complete combination behaves.
If several devices run together, add their average wattages first. A 60 W router, 100 W television and 40 W lamp create a 200 W average load; the nominal 2,000 Wh calculation is then about 10 hours before losses. Devices with large startup surges may still require more inverter headroom even when their combined running wattage appears modest.
Energy capacity is not the same as output capability
A station can have enough stored energy for an appliance and still be unable to run it. The appliance must stay within the station’s continuous AC output, and its startup demand must fit the surge limit. The DELTA 2 Max example lists 2,400 W of AC output. EcoFlow also advertises an X-Boost mode for some higher-wattage loads, but that behavior is model- and appliance-dependent. Check the exact manual and the appliance requirements rather than assuming a mode will make every high-power device work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Continuous output: the power the inverter can deliver for sustained operation.
- Surge or peak output: the short-duration capability used when motors, compressors or other loads start.
- Port limits: AC, USB and DC outputs can have separate limits, and using several ports at once may share a total output ceiling.
- Connection type: an appliance may require a grounded AC outlet, a particular DC voltage or a manufacturer-approved adapter.
When comparing stations, review nominal and usable energy, continuous and surge ratings, expected average load, inverter overhead, port types, expansion options, charging inputs and the assumptions behind any runtime chart. Do not multiply a product-page estimate from one model to another as if capacity were the only variable.

What a smaller 1,024 Wh example shows
EcoFlow’s DELTA 2 page lists a 1,024 Wh model powering a refrigerator identified at 120 W for 7–14 hours, and a 1,000 W coffee maker for 0.8 hours. The refrigerator range reflects a cycling load and operating conditions; the coffee-maker figure reflects a high-power heating appliance. The comparison demonstrates why capacity cannot be converted to time without considering duty cycle and average demand.
Those figures should not be scaled mechanically to predict another station. Doubling or halving a published runtime ignores inverter efficiency, control electronics, cutoff settings and differences in the appliances themselves.

Refrigerators
For food or medicine refrigeration, measure or obtain the refrigerator’s energy use over time, then confirm that the station can handle the compressor’s startup surge. Keep the station’s AC output enabled continuously if the refrigerator must remain powered. The DELTA 2 Max manual instructs users to set the AC timeout to “never” for continuous critical loads such as a refrigerator; otherwise an energy-saving timeout could turn the outlet off even though the battery still has charge.
Medical equipment
The DELTA 2 Max manual says the product can power a home ventilator (home CPAP) that does not have to be continuously monitored by professionals. It also tells users to follow their doctor’s instructions and consult the equipment manufacturer about restrictions. A generic runtime calculation is not a medical assurance: verify the device’s input requirements, approved power source, connection method, alarm behavior and backup plan with the equipment manufacturer and your clinician.

Other emergency equipment
For pumps, fans, heaters and communication equipment, identify both normal operating power and startup behavior. Prioritize loads by consequence: communications and medically necessary equipment may deserve a dedicated reserve, while optional entertainment or cooking loads can wait until the battery level and forecast are clear.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Using nameplate watts as an all-day average: measure a complete cycle or use an energy monitor, especially for refrigerators and washing machines.
- Ignoring standby draw: turn off unused AC output and adapters when they are not needed, unless a critical appliance requires continuous output.
- Confusing a surge rating with continuous power: compare the appliance’s sustained requirement with the continuous rating, then check startup separately.
- Assuming the display percentage is a precise fuel gauge: treat it as an estimate affected by temperature, load and battery condition.
- Applying one manufacturer’s table to every station: use product-page estimates only for the specified model and stated test conditions.
- Planning without a real test: connect the actual appliance, cable and accessories before an outage and observe the station under realistic use.
How to decide whether 2 kWh is enough
A 2 kWh station is a reasonable starting point when your priority is several low-power electronics, intermittent kitchen equipment or a refrigerator for a limited period, provided the inverter supports the loads. It is a poor fit for long operation of electric resistance heaters, ovens, kettles or other devices that consume around a kilowatt or more continuously: the energy is depleted quickly, and the output rating may be the limiting factor.
Write down the appliances you need, their measured or estimated average watts, the hours of operation and any startup surges. Add the energy requirements, then include a reserve for conversion losses and uncertainty. If the total exceeds the station’s usable energy, look for a compatible expansion battery or a larger station rather than expecting a software mode to create more stored energy. Expansion compatibility, charging time and the manufacturer’s limits must be checked for the exact model.
Bottom line for runtime planning
Think of a 2 kWh portable power station as an energy budget, not a universal number of hours. Start with available Wh divided by average W, then reduce the estimate for inverter and standby losses, reserve settings, temperature, aging and variable loads. Separately confirm continuous and surge output. The DELTA 2 Max’s 2,048 Wh capacity, 2,400 W AC rating and published examples—from 97 hours for a Wi-Fi router to 1.3 hours for a microwave—show the range, but they remain model-specific manufacturer estimates. For a refrigerator or medical device, verify the exact equipment requirements and configure the station for continuous operation before relying on it.
