The Xbox listing gives a U.S. price of $69.99 for Standard and $99.99 for Vault, with release on October 23, 2026. Microsoft’s reported policy says future Call of Duty games should reach Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass during the following holiday season—about a year after launch—rather than on day one.
What “premium model” means here
In this context, “premium” describes the way the new release is sold, not a separate graphics setting, competitive tier, or mandatory luxury edition. Modern Warfare 4 is a full-price game that must be purchased for launch access on Xbox Series X|S or Xbox on PC. Xbox explicitly says the 2026 title is not eligible for Xbox Game Pass at launch and directs customers to buy an edition.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That changes the decision for subscribers. A Game Pass membership alone does not unlock Modern Warfare 4 on release day. Players who want to play at launch need the game purchase, and players who want console online multiplayer also need the separately sold Game Pass Essential subscription. Those are two different requirements: one covers access to the game, while the other covers the online service.

Release date and early campaign access
Xbox lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for October 23, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC. The same listing says players who preorder can begin the campaign on October 16, one week before the general release. The early-access date is attached to preorder eligibility, so check the live store terms for the edition and platform you intend to buy.

Launch editions and U.S. prices
| Option | U.S. price listed by Xbox | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Edition | $69.99 | Players who want the base game at the lowest listed launch price |
| Vault Edition | $99.99 | Players who value the additional Vault benefits shown on the current product page |
| Vault Edition Upgrade | $30 | Existing Standard Edition owners who later decide to add the Vault package |
These are U.S. prices from Xbox’s listing accessed October 13, 2026. Taxes, regional pricing, platform storefront rules, and future promotions can change the amount shown at checkout. The $30 upgrade is mathematically the difference between the two listed editions, so a Standard purchase followed by the upgrade reaches the same $99.99 pre-tax total as buying Vault initially. Confirm the upgrade’s eligibility before purchasing: it is intended for Standard owners, not as a general substitute for the full game.
What is and is not established about Vault
The supplied Xbox details establish that Vault is the higher-priced edition and that an upgrade exists, but they do not provide an itemized list of every Vault entitlement. Do not assume that the extra $30 automatically includes a particular campaign pack, operator bundle, weapon blueprint, battle-pass benefit, or other item unless the live store page names it. Compare the current edition contents, platform, and redemption restrictions before paying the difference.
How access works with and without Game Pass
| Player situation | Can you play Modern Warfare 4 at launch? | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass subscriber without a game purchase | No | Buy Standard or Vault; Game Pass alone is not launch access |
| Game buyer on Xbox who wants online multiplayer | Yes, after release | Own the game and subscribe separately to Game Pass Essential for online multiplayer |
| Game buyer using Xbox cloud play | Yes, where supported | Own the game plus Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, subject to cloud availability |
| Player willing to wait for the subscription release | Not at launch | Wait for the reported later Game Pass addition; timing is described as the following holiday season |
Buying Modern Warfare 4 does not include the broader benefits of Game Pass. Conversely, holding a higher Game Pass tier does not waive the launch purchase requirement. Treat the game license and the subscription as separate line items when calculating your cost.

When could it arrive in Game Pass?
Windows Central reported on April 21, 2026 that Microsoft told the publication future Call of Duty titles would not join Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. The statement described a plan to add new Call of Duty games during the following holiday season, “about a year later.” It also said Call of Duty titles already in the Game Pass library would remain available.
That wording is a policy timetable, not a guaranteed date for every future game. For Modern Warfare 4, the practical implication is a choice between paying for launch access or waiting roughly a year for the subscription window described by Microsoft. “Following holiday season” does not identify a specific month, day, catalog region, or permanence period, so verify the catalog when the addition is announced.
Windows Central quoted a Microsoft spokesperson saying that players have different preferences and that the change responded to feedback, while Microsoft would “continue to listen and learn.” That is the company’s stated rationale in the report, not proof of a particular sales, subscription, or revenue outcome. Microsoft has not publicly established that every future Call of Duty release will have identical pricing, editions, or timing.

What the change means for different players
If you always play on launch day
The premium model removes the possibility of relying on an existing Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass subscription for day-one access. Budget for a Standard or Vault purchase before October 23. If campaign early access matters, preorder eligibility makes the relevant date October 16, but read the store’s conditions rather than assuming every preorder has identical benefits.

If you mainly play multiplayer
Your cost has two parts on Xbox: the game edition and Game Pass Essential for online multiplayer. Buying the game without the required online subscription does not provide multiplayer access. Conversely, Essential is not a replacement for the game purchase. Check whether your account already has the appropriate subscription before ordering so you do not count the same benefit twice.
If you play campaign only
You still need to buy the game for launch access, but the separately sold online multiplayer subscription is not the reason you are purchasing. Standard is the lower-cost route unless the current Vault description contains a benefit you specifically want.

If you play on PC
Xbox lists the game for Xbox on PC, while Microsoft’s reported policy specifically mentions PC Game Pass as a later catalog destination. A PC Game Pass subscription therefore does not provide launch access under the policy described by Windows Central. Confirm the PC storefront, account requirements, and edition entitlement before checkout.
If you are comfortable waiting
Waiting can avoid the launch purchase if Modern Warfare 4 follows the reported pattern, but it trades certainty and immediacy for a later catalog addition. The policy says about a year and the following holiday season; it does not promise an exact arrival date for this game or guarantee that every edition’s paid extras will be included.
How to choose Standard or Vault
- Decide whether launch access matters. If yes, select an edition purchase; if no, compare the cost of waiting with the value of playing now.
- Set the platform first. Choose Xbox Series X|S or Xbox on PC and confirm that the edition grants access on that platform.
- Read the current contents panel. Because the itemized Vault benefits can change, use the live Xbox listing to identify exactly what the extra $30 buys.
- Check multiplayer needs separately. If you will play online on Xbox, add Game Pass Essential to your budget.
- Check preorder terms. Campaign early access is listed for October 16, ahead of the October 23 release, but eligibility can depend on the edition, platform, and purchase timing.
- Review the final checkout price. The published $69.99 and $99.99 figures are U.S. listing prices before any applicable taxes or changed promotions.
Potential pitfalls and how to avoid them
- Assuming Game Pass includes the launch game: Xbox says Modern Warfare 4 is not eligible for Game Pass at launch. Buy an edition if you want to play immediately.
- Confusing game ownership with online access: Xbox lists Game Pass Essential as a separate requirement for online multiplayer.
- Paying twice for Vault: Standard owners can use the listed $30 upgrade; compare that route with the full Vault price before purchasing.
- Assuming a later catalog date is fixed: “Following holiday season” and “about a year later” are broad policy language, not a dated release promise.
- Assuming all editions have the same content: Verify the live itemized description, platform, and account restrictions.
- Relying on an old promotion: Activision Support lists an editions guide updated October 9, 2026 and a Monster Energy promotion. Eligibility and redemption deadlines can change, so use the current support terms rather than an archived post.
- Assuming physical availability or retailer pricing: Current Xbox digital pricing does not establish stock, disc formats, or prices at third-party retailers.
What remains uncertain
The confirmed player-facing facts are limited to the current Xbox listing and the policy statement reported by Windows Central. There is no established player-count, sales, revenue, or subscription-impact statistic that demonstrates how the premium change will affect the community. Likewise, there is no confirmed universal price, edition structure, or exact Game Pass arrival date for every future Call of Duty game.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Promotions, regional prices, store availability, cloud support, and edition contents are time-sensitive. Recheck the official Xbox product page and Activision Support immediately before buying, particularly if you are choosing Vault, using preorder access, or waiting for a later subscription release.
The practical takeaway
For 2026, “returning to premium” means paying for Modern Warfare 4 at launch instead of using Game Pass as a day-one entitlement. Standard costs $69.99 in the cited U.S. Xbox listing, Vault costs $99.99, and the separate $30 upgrade is available to Standard owners. Online Xbox multiplayer remains a separate Game Pass Essential requirement. Players who prefer subscription access can wait for the later Game Pass window described by Microsoft, but that window is approximately a year after launch rather than a guaranteed launch date.
