It puts the game files on your console or PC, but it does not unlock gameplay early. The confirmed access schedule separates Campaign, DMZ and the worldwide launch, and the exact Campaign and DMZ clock times have not been officially published.
What “preload” means in Modern Warfare 4
A preload is an advance download. Your platform retrieves the game’s installation files before the date attached to your purchase, so you do not have to wait for the full download when access opens. Installation may also finish in advance, depending on the platform and how the publisher distributes the files.

Preloading is not the same as receiving permission to play. The game can remain locked after every file is installed because the platform account, edition and release server still have to confirm that you are entitled to Campaign, DMZ or the full game. A completed preload therefore means “ready to unlock,” not “already playable.”
PC Gamer reported that the PC preload was live on October 16, 2026. That report also made clear that the installed files remained gated by the applicable early-access or full-launch date.

Modern Warfare 4 access dates
These are the dates currently published for the 2026 release. They describe access rights, not necessarily the moment a download button appears.

The schedule comes from Activision’s June 12 and October 15, 2026 announcements, with the PC preload and midnight-local reporting supplied by PC Gamer on October 16, 2026. If Activision changes a date or publishes a regional timetable, that newer notice takes precedence.
Who gets Campaign early access?
Campaign Early Access is tied to a digital preorder or prepurchase of the Standard Digital or Vault Edition. Activision says the offer applies across Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, PlayStation 5, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2, subject to platform and date changes.
The important distinction is the purchase format. Early access is described as a benefit of the digital transaction, not simply of owning any copy before launch. Activision’s wording is explicit: “Starting on Friday, October 16, players who have digitally pre-ordered or pre-purchased Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 get Early Access to the game’s Campaign.”

If your digital order is eligible and the game is fully preloaded, launching before the worldwide release should take you to Campaign once the entitlement opens. If the title still shows a lock, the preload itself has not failed; the account, edition, regional window or service status still needs to be checked.
When does DMZ early access begin?
DMZ has a separate early-access window. It is not automatically available when Campaign Early Access begins. Digital preorders are the qualifying purchase identified by Activision, and DMZ access is scheduled for the later date in the table above.
This separation explains why a player can enter Campaign while seeing DMZ remain unavailable. Installing all of the files does not collapse the two access gates into one. Keep the game updated and wait for the DMZ entitlement to open for your account.

When can everyone play the full game?
The worldwide full release is scheduled for October 23, 2026. PC Gamer describes the launch as occurring at midnight local time, but “midnight local” is not one simultaneous global moment: the calendar date and the corresponding server window depend on region and platform handling.

Activision cautions that time-zone differences and outages can affect the practical start of play. A player can therefore have a complete installation and an eligible purchase yet encounter a temporary lock, sign-in queue or unavailable service around launch. Check the publisher’s current service notices before treating a short delay as a purchase problem.
Activision’s official pages do not confirm exact Campaign and DMZ hours for this schedule. Treat times posted by forums or social-media accounts as predictions unless Activision publishes them.
How to preload on your platform
The labels differ between storefronts, but the process is the same: confirm the qualifying purchase, start the game’s download from the account that owns it, and let installation finish before the relevant access window.

- Confirm the edition and account. Check that the signed-in Xbox, PlayStation, Battle.net, Steam or Nintendo account is the one that made the digital preorder or prepurchase. Verify that the order is for the Standard Digital or Vault Edition when you are claiming Campaign Early Access.
- Open your game library or store page. Select Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and use the platform’s available download or install control. If a preload is not yet offered, the platform may not have opened distribution for your region or account.
- Allow the complete download and installation. Keep the console or PC powered and connected until the platform reports that installation is complete. Do not assume that seeing the title in your library means all required files are present.
- Install updates before the access window. A launch-day patch or revised content package can arrive after the initial preload. Apply any update the platform presents rather than starting with an outdated build.
- Launch after your entitlement opens. Start the game from the same account used for the purchase. If Campaign or DMZ is still locked, note the content-specific schedule and check for an outage before deleting and redownloading files.
Because Activision’s published materials do not specify storage sizes, download speeds or identical menu paths for every platform, do not rely on a single gigabyte figure or a universal button name. The platform’s own installation status is the authoritative indication that the local files are ready.

What to check if a preloaded game will not play
The game is installed but shows a lock
This is expected before the entitlement’s access date. First identify whether you are trying to open Campaign, DMZ or the full game, then compare that content with the schedule. Confirm that the signed-in account owns the digital preorder and that the platform is online. Repeatedly reinstalling cannot unlock a server-side date gate.
The download or install option is missing
Check the purchase history and the account region, then refresh the library or store page and install any pending platform update. A missing preload can also reflect a staged rollout or a storefront delay. If the transaction is absent, contact the platform retailer before launch rather than assuming the game was purchased on another account.
Campaign works but DMZ does not
That combination is consistent with the published schedule because DMZ has its own early-access date. Keep the installation intact and wait for the DMZ window; Campaign access does not prove that every mode has opened.

Check the publisher’s service status and the platform network status first. Activision has warned that outages can affect the practical start, and a regional rollout can make another player’s “midnight” different from yours. Once services recover, restart the game and allow any update to complete.

Do physical preorders receive early access?
Activision lists separately sold physical editions for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 through select retailers. Activision’s official pages do not promise digital Campaign or DMZ early access for physical copies.
A disc preorder also has a delivery dependency: you cannot install from the physical package until the retailer delivers it, unless the platform provides a separate digital entitlement. Verify the retailer’s estimated delivery date and the exact edition terms before relying on a physical preorder for early play. If early access is essential, the explicitly documented digital-preorder requirement is the safer basis for planning.
Supported platforms and purchase model
Activision lists Modern Warfare 4 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC through Battle.net, Xbox on PC, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Access dates can still be adjusted by platform or region, so the listing does not by itself establish an identical unlock hour everywhere.
The game is a standalone purchase rather than a launch-day Game Pass inclusion. Activision says Game Pass availability is planned for Holiday 2027. That planned window is separate from the 2026 preorder, early-access and worldwide-release schedule; a player should not expect a launch-day Game Pass entitlement to replace a purchase.
