BT.2020 is an ITU-R reference for ultra-high-definition television image systems, including colorimetry. A phone may accept, decode, convert or manage a BT.2020 signal while its physical panel reproduces only part of that reference space.
DCI-P3 is a smaller wide-gamut space associated with digital-cinema mastering. To judge a phone display, separate signal support from measured panel reproduction, then check the claimed gamut, the percentage, the display mode and the measurement conditions.

BT.2020 is a reference color space, not a phone certification
ITU-R BT.2020-2 defines parameters for UHDTV image systems and programme exchange. Its colorimetry specifies a much wider set of RGB primaries than older television spaces. The recommendation describes how a system represents color; it does not certify that every device carrying a BT.2020 signal can reproduce the entire reference gamut.

ITU-T F.780.6 defines it as “A range of colours within the spectrum of colours, or a colour space, that can be reproduced on an output device.” A display has colors outside its gamut, even if its electronics can receive data describing them.

The BT.2020 chromaticity coordinates
The standard’s RGB primaries are specified in CIE 1931 x,y chromaticity coordinates, with D65 as the reference white point. ITU-T F.780.6 (2025) reproduces these values from the 2015 BT.2020 revision:

These coordinates describe an idealized reference gamut. They are not a measurement of any particular phone, OLED panel, LCD backlight or color filter.
What “BT.2020” can mean in a phone specification
A label can refer to different layers of the imaging chain. Treating them as interchangeable is the main reason phone display claims are misunderstood.

A phone can therefore advertise BT.2020 compatibility while using a panel whose native gamut is closer to DCI-P3 or another space. The software receives the wider signal and maps colors into what the panel can show. Compatibility is useful, but it is not full coverage.
BT.2020 versus DCI-P3
Both are wide-gamut RGB spaces, but they were created for different production contexts. BT.2020 is the wider UHDTV system reference. DCI-P3 originated as a digital-cinema mastering gamut and occupies a smaller region of color space.

ITU-R material discusses P3 content represented in BT.2020 coordinates. That arrangement is a reminder that a BT.2020 container does not require the creative content to use the full BT.2020 gamut. A phone may receive a BT.2020-tagged stream whose meaningful colors are largely within P3.
There is no single universally correct “DCI-P3 is X percent of BT.2020” figure. The result changes with the comparison method, such as a two-dimensional chromaticity-area calculation or a three-dimensional color-volume calculation. A precise-looking ratio without its method can mislead.
Coverage, volume and why the percentage needs context
Coverage asks how much of a reference gamut’s defined region is intersected by the display’s reproducible region. A phone described as covering 90% of BT.2020 is being compared with the BT.2020 reference, but the number is meaningful only if the test method is known.
Volume compares the three-dimensional range of colors, usually incorporating lightness or luminance as well as chromaticity. A display can have a high area-coverage figure yet differ substantially in brightness-dependent color volume. Conversely, a volume figure can hide gaps at particular hues.
ITU-R notes that effective gamut depends on display capability and luminance. The same panel may produce different measurable results at different brightness levels, in different color modes or after a firmware change. Ambient-light conditions, calibration equipment, test patterns and the chosen color space also affect the result.

Questions to ask about any coverage claim
- Is the reference gamut BT.2020, DCI-P3, sRGB or another space?
- Is the number coverage, color volume or a different metric?
- Which display mode was active, such as a vivid, cinema or natural mode?
- At what luminance, white point and ambient-light condition was the measurement made?
- Was the result taken from a production phone, a sample panel or a laboratory prototype?
- Does the claim describe native panel output or a signal-processing capability?
- Was the percentage measured with a specified instrument and color-management workflow?
If a specification answers only “supports BT.2020,” it has not supplied a panel-coverage measurement.
How a phone displays colors outside its panel gamut
When source content asks for a color the panel cannot emit, the display pipeline must map that color into its available range. ITU-R BT.2390 discusses this practical display-mapping problem.
Clipping
Clipping moves an out-of-gamut color to the nearest reproducible boundary. This preserves some saturation but can make neighboring shades collapse into the same displayed color. Highly saturated highlights, neon signs and bright colored lights are common places to notice the loss.
Compression or perceptual mapping
A mapping algorithm can reduce saturation or adjust lightness so that more distinctions remain visible inside the panel’s limits. The result may look less vivid than the source but retain smoother gradients and more detail.
Tone and gamut mapping together
HDR content adds a luminance problem. A phone may need to map both brightness and chromaticity, so the final appearance depends on the display’s peak luminance, its transfer function and the selected picture mode. “BT.2020 support” alone does not reveal which mapping strategy is used.

How to read a phone’s display specification
- Find the exact wording. Separate “BT.2020 compatible,” “BT.2020 signal support,” “DCI-P3 display” and “X% coverage.” They describe different things.
- Identify the reference. A percentage has no meaning until the specification names the gamut being measured.
- Check coverage versus volume. Do not compare a BT.2020 area-coverage figure with a DCI-P3 volume figure as if they were equivalent.
- Locate the operating mode. A natural or color-accurate mode may intentionally reduce saturation compared with a vivid mode.
- Look for measurement conditions. Brightness, white point, test instrument and date matter, especially for OLED displays whose output changes with drive level.
- Separate content compatibility from output. A decoder can accept a BT.2020 stream even when the panel displays a mapped version.
- Check whether the claim is model-specific. A family name or panel supplier does not establish results for every size, regional variant or replacement panel.
If those details are missing, treat the statement as a compatibility claim rather than evidence of full BT.2020 reproduction.
What the difference means for everyday phone use
HDR video
Many HDR workflows use wide-gamut signaling, and BT.2020 is the system reference used by UHDTV standards. A compatible phone can interpret that signal and apply the required mapping. The visible benefit depends on the panel’s actual gamut, brightness and tone-mapping behavior, not on the tag alone.
Photos and camera apps
A camera app may capture or export images in a wide color space. Viewing the file on a narrower display does not erase the original data, but the phone must convert colors for presentation. Editing controls can still operate on the wider source even when the preview is limited by the panel.
Games and user interfaces
Game engines and operating systems may render in one working space and convert to the display’s space at the final stage. A wider panel can show more saturated effects when the content is authored for it, but inaccurate color management can produce oversaturation or dullness.

Brightness and viewing environment
Color gamut is not the same as perceived image quality. Brightness, black level, contrast, reflections and ambient light influence whether extra saturated colors are visible. A display with a larger theoretical gamut may not look better in a brightly lit room if reflections overwhelm those differences.
Common misunderstandings
“BT.2020” means every BT.2020 color appears on screen
No. The label may refer only to a signal or processing path. Full-panel reproduction requires a measured comparison with the BT.2020 reference.
A higher percentage is always better
Only when the reference, metric and conditions are comparable. A 95% coverage result and a 95% volume result are not the same achievement, and figures from different modes cannot be ranked directly.
DCI-P3 and BT.2020 are interchangeable names
No. DCI-P3 is the smaller cinema-related gamut; BT.2020 is the wider UHDTV reference. Content mastered in P3 can still travel inside a BT.2020 signal representation.
Wide gamut guarantees accurate color
Gamut size describes the range of reproducible colors, not whether the phone places every color at the correct hue, saturation and brightness. Calibration and color management determine accuracy within that range.
A practical decision rule
For a phone used mainly to watch existing cinema-oriented content, a verified DCI-P3 measurement, accurate calibration and good HDR mapping may matter more than an unsupported BT.2020 badge. For UHDTV-oriented workflows, BT.2020 signal handling is useful, but you should still look for a measured panel result and the conditions behind it.
The safest interpretation is precise: BT.2020 describes the wider reference signal space; BT.2020 coverage describes how much of that space a particular display reproduces under stated conditions. Until a specification supplies the second kind of evidence, do not read the first as a promise of full gamut coverage.
