Most hosted screenshot APIs capture pages in headless Chromium or Chrome, driven by Puppeteer, Playwright, or the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP). That is a dominant pattern, not a universal rule: Playwright can run Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit, and each provider chooses its own browser build, operating system, fonts, viewport, device scale factor, and page-wait rules. Those details—not just the browser’s brand—determine the pixels you receive.
The short answer: usually Chromium, but verify the implementation
Hosted services put a browser behind an HTTP or WebSocket API. Your request supplies a URL (or HTML), and the service launches or reuses an isolated browser context, loads the page, waits according to its rules, and calls a screenshot method. Chromium is the most common engine documented by the services covered here.
- Chromium/Chrome: the normal path for Puppeteer and CDP-based automation.
- Firefox or WebKit: possible when a provider builds on Playwright and exposes those engines.
- Undisclosed build: some APIs name an engine family but not the exact browser version or operating-system image.
For visual regression, legal evidence, design review, or any pixel-sensitive workflow, ask the vendor for the engine family, exact version or upgrade cadence, OS image, installed fonts, headless/headful mode, viewport defaults, and waiting behavior.
How the main automation stacks map to browsers
Playwright: one API, three engine families
Playwright’s official example imports one engine and notes that the same code can use Chromium or Firefox: const { webkit } = require('playwright'); // Or 'chromium' or 'firefox'. It then calls page.screenshot(). See the Playwright Page documentation for the screenshot API.

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
- Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls

A hosted service built on Playwright can therefore offer engine selection, but it may expose only one production-safe choice. “Playwright-powered” does not by itself mean that every request is rendered three ways.
Puppeteer and the Chrome DevTools Protocol
Puppeteer supplies a high-level automation API for Chrome and Firefox over CDP and WebDriver BiDi, according to Chrome for Developers. In practice, Puppeteer deployments are strongly Chrome/Chromium-oriented: the service decides which binary, build flags, fonts, and operating-system image actually run your page.
Direct CDP connections
CDP is Chrome’s browser-control protocol. A provider can expose a WebSocket endpoint, accept Puppeteer or Playwright connections, and keep browser lifecycle, isolation, scaling, and network policy behind that endpoint. The protocol name tells you the control surface; it does not guarantee a particular Chrome version.
What documented providers reveal
| Provider or tool | Documented engine information | What to verify before relying on pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Browserless screenshot API | Its REST /screenshot endpoint returns PNG, JPEG, or WebP, accepts URL or HTML, and supports Puppeteer-style options such as full-page capture, clipping, viewport, device scale, and selector capture. Browserless also documents Chromium Playwright connections, for example wss://production-sfo.browserless.io/chromium/playwright?.... See the screenshot endpoint and the Playwright connection guide. |
Ask for the production browser build, OS image, font set, and upgrade schedule. |
| ScreenshotOne | Its documentation describes a browser-tool algorithm aligned with Chrome DevTools Protocol behavior, with tuning and site-specific optimizations. It accepts URL or HTML and documents PNG, JPEG, WebP, and other response formats. See ScreenshotOne’s options documentation and its algorithm explanation at how it works. | The public documentation reviewed does not promise one fixed browser build; confirm version details for pixel-sensitive baselines. |
| Playwright library | Can launch Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit and capture with page.screenshot(). The official visual-comparison guidance warns that host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors can change rendering. See Playwright visual comparisons. |
Pin the same engine, version, OS, fonts, and launch settings for baseline and candidate images. |
These are documented implementations, not a census of every screenshot vendor. Browser engines and builds change, so treat a provider’s current documentation and a written version commitment as authoritative.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why the same URL produces different screenshots
Engine and browser version
Different layout engines resolve CSS, font metrics, SVG, video, and accessibility-related behavior differently. Even two Chromium builds can differ after a rendering or font update. A service that says only “Chrome” leaves the build unspecified.

Operating system and fonts
Text wrapping, fallback glyphs, anti-aliasing, emoji, and line height depend on installed fonts and OS rendering. Playwright explicitly lists host OS and settings among visual-variation sources. A Linux container and a macOS desktop can produce different line breaks from identical HTML.
Viewport, device scale, and emulation
CSS viewport width controls responsive breakpoints; device scale factor controls raster density; mobile emulation can alter user agent, touch behavior, and viewport metrics. Record width, height, scale, orientation, and whether the service uses a device preset.
Headless mode and browser flags
Headless and headful runs can differ in compositing, GPU paths, and timing. Providers may add flags for sandboxing, shared memory, media, or security. Those flags are part of the rendering environment even when the API does not expose them.
Waiting, fonts, images, and lazy loading
A screenshot taken after the load event is not necessarily fully painted. Web fonts may still be loading; images may be lazy; JavaScript may replace content after hydration. Compare services’ controls for a delay, a CSS selector, network idle, explicit font readiness, full-page capture, and lazy-image loading.
Network, geography, and consent state
CDNs, localization, cookies, geolocation, timezone, ads, bot checks, and A/B tests can change the DOM. A provider’s proxy region and request headers matter as much as its browser. Capture with a controlled URL state and record cookies and authentication where reproducibility matters.

How to reproduce a hosted capture yourself with Playwright
The following Node.js example makes the environment explicit. Install Playwright, install the browser binaries it needs, and use the same project image in CI and production.
- Install the package:
npm install -D playwright. - Install Chromium:
npx playwright install chromium. - Create
shot.mjs:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'shot.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
For a Firefox or WebKit comparison, replace the import and launch call with firefox or webkit, install that browser with npx playwright install firefox or npx playwright install webkit, and keep every other setting constant. Do not compare images made with different viewport, scale, fonts, or wait conditions and attribute every difference to the engine.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMake dynamic pages deterministic
- Wait for a meaningful selector, not an arbitrary delay, when the page exposes one.
- Wait for
document.fonts.readybefore capturing text-heavy layouts. - Scroll or use a provider’s lazy-load option so below-the-fold images exist before full-page capture.
- Disable animations in a test stylesheet and freeze dates, random data, and experiment assignments where possible.
- Use a fixed locale, timezone, geolocation, user agent, cookies, and authentication state.
How to choose a screenshot API when browser fidelity matters
Compare these capabilities before choosing a service:
- Engine disclosure: Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, exact version or cadence, OS image, and fonts.
- Page readiness: selector waits, delay, network-idle mode, font/image handling, and lazy-load support.
- Geometry: viewport presets, arbitrary dimensions, device scale, clipping, element capture, and full-page stitching.
- Output: PNG for lossless comparison, JPEG for smaller photographic files, WebP where supported, and PDF if pagination matters.
- Request control: headers, cookies, authorization, user agent, timezone, geolocation, proxy region, and request blocking.
- Reliability behavior: timeouts, retries, cache policy, bot-check handling, status headers, and whether failed loads are charged.

Troubleshooting mismatched or incomplete images
Text wraps differently
Check viewport width, device scale, OS, browser version, and fonts first. Use the same container image and install the exact font files in both environments.
Blank or partially rendered capture
Increase the navigation timeout, wait for a stable selector or network idle, and verify that the page does not require authentication, a consent action, or a bot challenge. For lazy content, scroll or enable full-page lazy loading.
Animations or carousels change each run
Inject CSS to pause animations, click or set the desired carousel state, and capture after the state is visible. A longer timeout alone does not make nondeterministic content stable.
Images are missing
Inspect blocked resource types, CSP, signed-image expiry, hotlink protection, and geographic delivery. Preserve required cookies and authorization headers; do not block image requests when diagnosing.
Full-page image is stitched incorrectly
Sticky headers, position-fixed elements, infinite scroll, and viewport-triggered effects can confuse stitching. Prefer an element capture or PDF for paginated content, hide sticky elements during capture, and ensure the page reaches a finite scroll height.
A service bills or rejects a request unexpectedly
Read its status and billing headers, distinguish cache hits from fresh captures, and check URL encoding, authentication, rate limits, and bot-check responses. ScreenshotNeo returns X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers so you can see the outcome of each response.

Reliability, performance, and cost considerations
Browser startup, navigation, JavaScript execution, image decoding, font loading, and full-page stitching all add work. Reusing a browser context, blocking unnecessary trackers, selecting a precise wait condition, and caching immutable URLs can reduce time and bandwidth. A short fixed delay may be faster but less reliable than waiting for the selector that proves the page is ready.

For a visual test suite, pin the environment and store the engine/version metadata with each baseline. For production thumbnails, choose an output format and dimensions appropriate to the consumer, use a cache TTL, and monitor timeout and bot-check rates. Compare prices using successful, billable captures rather than raw request counts; providers differ in how they treat cache hits and failed loads.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are screenshot APIs always using Google Chrome?
No. Chromium/Chrome is the dominant documented pattern, but a Playwright-based service can use Firefox or WebKit, and some providers do not publish an exact binary version.
Can I request Firefox or Safari rendering from any screenshot API?
No. The API must expose those engines. Confirm supported engine choices and versions with the provider; Playwright itself supports Firefox and WebKit, while a Chromium-only endpoint does not.
Which image format is best for visual regression tests?
PNG is usually the safest baseline because it is lossless. JPEG and WebP can be smaller, but compression settings can introduce pixel differences that obscure layout changes.
