Removing someone from a Microsoft family group and removing a Windows account from a PC are two different actions, and they break different things. Taking someone out of the family group ends their Family Safety protections and their access to services other members share, such as a Microsoft 365 Family subscription. Their Microsoft account is not deleted. Removing a Windows account under Settings > Accounts > Other users removes that person’s sign-in and data from that one computer. Check which of the two you mean before you click anything.
Two removals that are often confused
The title’s phrase “family member account” can refer to either action. The documented removal of group membership happens on Microsoft’s online Family Safety page, not in the Windows Settings app. Device-level removal happens in Windows itself. The two can be done independently, so a person may be removed from the family group and still have a working Windows account on your PC, or the reverse.

Removing someone from the Microsoft family group
Only an organizer can do this. Microsoft’s steps are:
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that is an organizer of the family group, and open the Family Safety account page.
- Find the member’s entry and open that member’s menu.
- Select Remove from family group.
- Confirm the removal.
If the option is missing for a child account, the consent step is the usual cause. Follow the prompt to remove consent first, then return to the member’s menu and complete the removal. Consent is covered in more detail below.

Removing a Windows account from one PC
This is the procedure to use when you want the person’s sign-in and local data gone from a specific computer:
- Open Settings and go to Accounts.
- Select Other users.
- Select the account you want to remove.
- Select Remove and confirm.
Microsoft says this removes the account’s sign-in information and data from that device. Make sure the person has the files they need before you confirm, because the device-level removal is the step that deletes data.
What breaks, area by area
| Area | Removing from the family group | Removing the Windows account on one PC |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft account | Not deleted. Microsoft’s guidance says leaving or being removed from a group is not account deletion. | Not deleted. Windows says removing a device account does not delete the person’s Microsoft account. |
| Family Safety protections | The former member loses Family Safety features, and the organizer can no longer manage that member’s settings through the group. | Does not perform group removal. Microsoft’s documentation does not say this step ends the person’s family-group controls, so do not assume it does. |
| Shared subscriptions and purchases | Access to services other members provide is lost. Microsoft’s removal page states: “Anyone leaving or removed from a family group will also lose access to shared products and services made available by other members, such as a Microsoft 365 Family subscription.” It does not say removal cancels the subscriber’s own plan. | Microsoft’s Windows account-removal steps do not describe any effect on shared subscriptions. |
| Sign-in and files on the PC | Microsoft’s family-group guidance does not say that this step deletes local Windows data. | Sign-in information and data for that account are removed from that device. |
| Child consent | May have to be withdrawn before removal can be completed. | Not described as a requirement of the Other users steps. |
| Leftover restrictions | If restrictions still apply on a device afterward, see the troubleshooting section below. | Same troubleshooting path applies if restrictions persist. |
Who can remove a member, and what organizers keep
Only family organizers can remove members from the group. Organizers manage screen time, website and search filters, app and game filters, purchases, consent, and activity reports for members. Removing a member ends those controls for that person; it does not change what other members can see.

Activity reporting has conditions that affect what you will see:
- Reports cover supported Windows, Xbox, and Android activity, but only when reporting is enabled for the member and their device is connected.
- Web and search reporting depends on the browser and on the member signing in. It does not capture all browsing in every browser.
- Only organizers can turn reporting on or off and view the reports.
Children, consent, and the removal sequence
For a child account, removing the person from the family group may be blocked until parental consent is withdrawn. Microsoft’s prompt walks through this. The order matters: withdraw consent first, then remove the member from the group. Trying to remove the member without that step is the most common reason the option appears to be missing.
When restrictions still appear on a Windows PC
Sometimes a device keeps enforcing Family Safety settings after the person has left the group. Microsoft documents a troubleshooting path for this case, and it applies to a device that still enforces settings, not to every removal. Run the following in an elevated Command Prompt on each affected device:

Restart the device afterward. The refresh task and restart must be run on each device where the settings still apply; running it on one PC does not clear the others.

Microsoft’s support pages do not show publication dates for these procedures, and menu labels can shift between Windows releases and Microsoft account pages. If a label on your screen differs from the steps above, look for the same action under the member’s entry or the account’s settings and confirm the wording before you proceed.

Removing a device account is not a substitute for removing a family-group member, and removing a family-group member is not a substitute for cleaning up a Windows account. If your goal is to stop a person’s access to a specific PC, use the device steps. If your goal is to end their family-group controls and shared benefits, use the online removal.
Finally, Microsoft’s documentation describes these procedures for the family-group and Windows account features as they are currently presented. Because it does not date them, verify each step against the screen you are looking at.
