An IP rating tells you what kinds of dust or water exposure a speaker’s enclosure was tested to resist; it does not make the speaker universally waterproof. Read the first digit for protection from solids and the second for water, then check the exact model’s instructions for exposure limits, liquids, covers, drying and charging.
What an IP rating tells you
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The code describes protection an enclosure provides against the entry of solids and water. Its first numeral concerns solids; its second concerns water. A letter X means that the corresponding category is not specified in the code. It does not mean the speaker failed that test. The European Commission Joint Research Centre’s discussion of IEC 60529 explains that an IP rating grades an enclosure’s resistance to dust or liquids, rather than every aspect of a product’s performance (JRC report; see also Samsung’s IP-rating guide).

For example, IPX7 specifies a water category but no solids category, while IP6X specifies a solids category but no water category. These codes therefore do not answer the same questions as a rating with both digits stated. When you see a speaker advertised as “water-resistant,” look for the actual IP code and the maker’s explanation of the conditions behind it.
How to read the digits
The first digit: solids and dust
The first digit describes protection against solid particles. IP6X means dust-tight; IP5X means dust-protected, which is a different claim. If a speaker has no specified first digit, as in IPX7, do not infer dust protection from the water rating. Samsung’s guide summarizes the solid-object and water categories used in IP ratings (Samsung).

The second digit: the kind of water exposure
The water digit distinguishes forms of exposure; it is not a universal “how waterproof” score. In the IEC-based table reproduced in the JRC report, class 4 concerns splashing water, classes 5 and 6 concern water jets—with class 6 covering powerful jets—and class 7 concerns temporary immersion under standardized pressure and time. Class 8 concerns continuous immersion under conditions agreed between the manufacturer and user that are more severe than class 7. Class 9 concerns high-pressure, high-temperature jets (JRC report).
That distinction matters when choosing a speaker for a specific setting. A jet test and an immersion test are different kinds of protection. A higher-looking water digit does not establish that a product has passed every lower-numbered exposure test. If resistance to spray or jets is important, check whether the manufacturer states that protection separately; do not treat an immersion rating alone as proof of jet resistance.
| Code or class | What the stated category means | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| IPX4 | Protection against splashing water. | No specified solids category; no claim of immersion protection. |
| IPX5 or IPX6 | Protection against water jets; class 6 concerns powerful jets. | No specified solids category; these codes do not, by themselves, state an immersion rating. |
| IPX7 | Water protection for temporary immersion under standardized pressure and time. | No specified solids category and no general proof of jet protection. |
| IPX8 | Water protection for continuous immersion under manufacturer/user-agreed conditions more severe than class 7. | No specified solids category; the code alone does not give the agreed depth and duration. |
| IP6X | Dust-tight protection. | No specified water category. |
| IP5X | Dust-protected protection, a different claim from dust-tight. | No specified water category. |
| IP67 | Digit 6 means dust-tight; digit 7 is the temporary-immersion water category. | Not a universal guarantee for every liquid, exposure, or underwater use. |
The category descriptions in this table follow the JRC’s IEC-based table and Samsung’s consumer guide; a maker’s model-specific instructions supply the practical conditions for a particular speaker (JRC report; Samsung).
What IP67 means for a Bluetooth speaker
IP67 combines two separate claims: dust-tight protection from the first digit, and the IPX7 temporary-immersion category from the second. It is a useful shorthand, but it is not permission to expose every IP67 speaker to every kind of water or to use it underwater. The enclosure rating does not settle whether the liquid is suitable, whether a cap must be closed, or how the speaker should be handled and dried afterward.

Manufacturers make those limits explicit. Bose says that IP67 protection on compatible SoundLink models does not mean they should be intentionally operated underwater, and advises following care instructions after exposure to saltwater, chlorine, mud or sand (Bose waterproof-speaker guidance). Apple’s Beats Pill guidance likewise says not to intentionally submerge the speaker, warns against pressurized or high-velocity water, and says not to charge it until it is completely dry (Apple Support).
These are model-specific instructions, not a contradiction in the rating. The IP code describes a category of enclosure protection under defined test conditions; the manufacturer’s guidance tells owners how those conditions relate—or do not relate—to real use and care.
Why the fine print changes what a rating means in practice
Depth, duration and test conditions
A code such as IPX7 names a category, but a product page or manual may give the test conditions that apply to one model. LG says its xboom Bounce was tested to IP67 under IEC 60529 and describes water resistance up to 1 metre for 30 minutes in fresh water. LG also instructs users to dry the speaker before use and not to charge it while wet (LG xboom Bounce product page). Those figures belong to LG’s description of that model, not to every speaker bearing an IP67 code.
Sony’s SRS-XB12 help guide describes its IPX7 water test as gentle submersion to 1 metre for 30 minutes and says the cap must be fastened securely for the stated performance. The same guide describes eight hours of dust testing with particles up to 75 μm for that model. These are Sony’s model-specific test details, not universal promises attached to other speakers’ ratings (Sony SRS-XB12 help guide).

Which liquid is involved
“Water” in a rating should not be assumed to mean every liquid a speaker might encounter. LG specifies fresh water for the xboom Bounce’s stated immersion conditions. Sony’s SRS-XB12 guide lists fresh, tap and pool water as applicable for its instructions, while excluding soapy water, detergent, shampoo, hot-spring water and salt water. Neither example should be generalized to a different product without checking its own manual.
For a pool or beach, identify the actual exposure rather than relying on a broad “waterproof” label. A speaker near a pool may face splashes; one at the beach may encounter sand, saltwater or both. An IP code does not establish that saltwater, soap or all pool chemicals are safe for a particular speaker. Follow the maker’s explicit advice for the model and the liquid in question.
Port covers, age and damage
Some models depend on a cover or cap being correctly secured. Sony’s SRS-XB12 guidance makes that condition part of the stated performance. A rating should therefore be read alongside any instructions about doors, plugs, caps or seals; a product’s nominal code does not tell you whether an open or unsecured port is protected.

Resistance can also change with use. Apple says the Beats Pill’s water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and may decrease through normal wear. That is a warning specific to Apple’s guidance for that product, but it illustrates why an old rating should not be treated as an eternal guarantee after wear, impact or damage (Apple Support).

How to decide whether a speaker suits your use
Start with the exposure you expect, then match it to the exact rating and the manufacturer’s conditions. The digits alone are not enough if your use involves immersion, a water jet, a particular liquid, or a port that has to be closed.
- Find the complete code. Confirm the exact IP rating for the precise model, rather than relying on a listing that says only “waterproof” or “water-resistant.” Note whether either digit is X.
- Name the exposure. Decide whether you need protection from splashes, rain, jets, dust, temporary immersion, or more than one of these. Do not assume one water category covers another.
- Read the model’s conditions. Look for a stated depth, duration, test description and any limits on liquid type. Treat numbers as applying only to the model and conditions the manufacturer specifies.
- Check what must be closed. See whether a port cover or cap has to be secured for the rating to apply, and follow the maker’s instructions for doing so.
- Plan what happens after exposure. Check whether the manufacturer gives drying, cleaning or charging directions. Do not charge a wet device when its instructions say to wait until it is dry.
- Consider the speaker’s condition. Check for instructions or warnings about wear and damage. A published rating describes a tested enclosure, not a guarantee that a worn or damaged unit retains its original resistance.
If a speaker’s documentation does not establish the condition you care about—such as saltwater exposure or water jets—treat that protection as unspecified rather than filling the gap with assumptions. When the precise limit is important, consult the maker’s current support page or manual for the exact model and region.

An IP rating is about enclosure resistance to specified ingress conditions. The JRC notes that it does not, by itself, establish every other performance criterion for a product (JRC report). It is not a general measure of ruggedness, and it does not mean that a speaker can be dropped, used in any environment, or exposed to any liquid without risk.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- It is not an all-liquid guarantee. The model’s guidance may restrict water types or name liquids that are excluded.
- It is not a promise of underwater operation. Bose explicitly cautions against intentional underwater use of compatible IP67 SoundLink speakers.
- It does not automatically cover every exposure shape. Splash, jet and immersion categories describe different tests.
- It does not settle care after exposure. Drying and charging instructions can be as important as the code itself.
- It does not mean protection is permanent. Apple warns that the Beats Pill’s resistance may diminish with normal wear.
Common questions when reading speaker ratings
Is an IPX7 speaker waterproof?
IPX7 indicates a water category for temporary immersion under standardized pressure and time, but the X means no solids category is specified. The rating alone does not establish all immersion conditions, water-jet protection, acceptable liquids or permission to operate the speaker underwater. Use the maker’s limits for the exact model.

Can I use an IP67 speaker at a pool or beach?
The code alone cannot answer that for every speaker. Check the model’s listed liquids and care instructions: Sony’s SRS-XB12 guidance excludes salt water, while LG’s xboom Bounce description specifies fresh water for its stated test. Bose and Apple also caution against intentional underwater use for the models covered in their respective guidance.
Does IP67 mean better water protection than IPX6?
It means a different water category, not a universal ranking across every exposure. IPX6 concerns powerful water jets; the 7 in IP67 concerns temporary immersion. If your intended use involves jets, verify that the manufacturer separately states the relevant protection rather than inferring it from the immersion digit.
What should I do before charging a speaker that got wet?
Follow the model’s care instructions and wait until the speaker is dry if the maker requires it. LG says not to charge its xboom Bounce while wet, and Apple says not to charge the Beats Pill until completely dry. Do not assume another model has identical guidance.
