What Bing Knows About You: Search History, Personalization, and Privacy Controls

Short answer: Bing can associate your searches with the terms you enter and signals such as your IP address and location, cookie identifiers, search time and date, and browser configuration. If you search while signed in to a Microsoft account, eligible activity may appear in the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard. Turning off Bing search history stops new searches from being added; it does not delete searches already saved. To remove existing entries, you must clear the relevant account or device history separately.

The controls are useful, but they have boundaries. Signed-in account history, signed-out Bing history, and your browser’s local history are separate records. The dashboard may not contain every search, and clearing history does not promise immediate deletion from every backup system.

What does Bing know about me?

Microsoft’s search-history documentation says Bing collects the search terms you provide and may collect related information including your IP address and location, unique identifiers in cookies, the time and date of the search, and your browser configuration. These are Microsoft’s stated categories. They should not be read as a guarantee that every field is attached to every search in every situation.

Those signals help Microsoft operate and improve search. They can also connect activity to a device, session, or account under the circumstances described by Microsoft. A signed-in search has a clearer account relationship than a signed-out search, while cookies and network information can still provide context for delivering results and maintaining settings.

Why the information affects your results

Microsoft says search history can help Bing offer suggestions as you type and provide personalized results. Its explanation of relevance also identifies location, language, and device characteristics as inputs. Device characteristics can include the operating system, browser, and whether you are using a phone, tablet, or desktop computer.

For example, the same query can produce different practical results when Bing knows a location, uses a selected language, or recognizes a mobile device. Search history is only one input. Changing the history setting alone may not remove all personalization caused by location, language, device information, or other Bing settings.

How do I see my Bing search history?

Signed-in searches: Microsoft Privacy Dashboard

When you use Bing while signed in to a personal Microsoft account, eligible search activity can appear in the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account you use with Bing.
  2. Open the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
  3. Go to the Browsing and search area.
  4. Review the search-history entries that Microsoft makes available for that account.

The Bing Search History page is another route for viewing history. The exact entries shown depend on account state, product use, settings, service availability, and region.

Signed-out searches: Bing’s device-level history

Searches made while signed out are not shown in the account dashboard and are not controlled by the account-level history setting. Bing provides device-level history controls on its Search History page for this use. That means a history you see on one signed-out device should not be treated as a complete record of signed-out searches made elsewhere.

Why the dashboard may not show everything

Microsoft lists several reasons an activity may be absent: you may not have been signed in, data may have been cleared, collection settings may have been turned off, a feature or region may not be supported, the display may be temporarily unavailable, or the data may not be available in the dashboard at all. The dashboard is therefore an account-activity view, not a guaranteed cross-device log of every query you have ever entered.

How do I turn off Bing search history?

Microsoft’s documented control is on the Bing Search History page.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the Bing Search History page.
  2. Find the Show new searches here setting.
  3. Turn that setting off.

Microsoft Support states: “When search history is off, nothing new is added to your search history.” The setting is preventive, not retroactive. Searches already listed remain until you clear them separately.

Why is my search history still there after I turned it off?

The most likely explanation is that the toggle only stops future additions. It does not remove existing entries. A second possibility is scope: you may be looking at signed-out device history, a different Microsoft account, or your browser’s local history rather than the account history controlled by the toggle.

Check which account is signed in, identify whether the search was made signed in or signed out, and then use the matching deletion path. Turning off the setting also does not erase searches stored in a browser, another search provider, or a separate device.

How do I delete my Bing search history?

Clear signed-in account history

  1. Sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the searches.
  2. Open the Microsoft Privacy Dashboard.
  3. Enter Browsing and search.
  4. Under Search history, select Clear all activities.
  5. Confirm the deletion when prompted.

Microsoft says clearing data removes it from the dashboard and begins its removal from Microsoft’s systems. It does not establish that every copy disappears instantly. Microsoft also notes that some copies may remain in backup systems for a limited time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear signed-out device history

On the Bing Search History page, Microsoft’s instructions describe deleting individual searches or clearing all history for signed-out use. This history is device-specific. Clearing it on one device does not establish that a signed-out history on another device has been removed.

Clear your browser history separately

Bing history and browser history are different records. A browser can retain the page address, visit time, or form data associated with a search even after Bing history is cleared. Use your browser’s own history and data controls if you also want to remove local records. The Microsoft controls described here do not promise universal deletion from every browser or search provider.

What each privacy control actually changes

Choice or scope What it does Important limitation
Turn off search history Prevents new Bing searches from being added to the relevant history view. Existing entries remain until cleared separately.
Clear account search history Removes the signed-in account history selected in the Privacy Dashboard and starts Microsoft’s removal process. Backup copies may remain for a limited time, and this does not clear browser history.
Clear signed-out history Deletes individual searches or all history from the signed-out Bing history on that device. It is device-specific and does not appear in the account dashboard.
Stay signed in versus signed out Signed-in activity can be associated with the Microsoft account and may appear in the dashboard; signed-out activity uses device-level controls. Neither state should be treated as a complete record of all browsing activity.
Change personalization settings Lets you review options such as location, language, SafeSearch, voice search, search suggestions, and personalization. Changing one option does not necessarily disable every other relevance signal.

How to reduce personalization beyond search history

Review Bing Settings

Bing Settings include controls for location and language, as well as SafeSearch, voice search, search suggestions, and personalization. Review these settings if your goal is to reduce customized results rather than merely stop history entries.

  1. Open Bing Settings.
  2. Review the selected location and language.
  3. Check SafeSearch, voice-search, search-suggestion, and personalization options.
  4. Save any changes and re-run a query to see whether the result context changes.

A setting change can affect future result delivery without deleting historical records. Keep the two goals separate: reducing future personalization and removing saved history require different actions.

Review account-level privacy controls

The Privacy Dashboard provides broader controls for account-associated search, location, and other Microsoft activity. If a result feels personalized even after history is turned off, review those controls and the Bing Settings options rather than assuming the history toggle controls every input.

How long does Microsoft keep Bing search data?

Microsoft’s support page gives two time statements that address different issues. They should not be combined into a claim that all Bing searches are automatically deleted after one fixed period.

Period stated by Microsoft What the statement means What it does not establish
18 months After 18 months, Microsoft says it no longer uses cookies and other identifiers that could be linked to a specific account or device to personalize your search experience. It is not a statement that all underlying search data is deleted after 18 months.
Up to 5 years Microsoft says that, “In the coming months,” it will retain data from authenticated users for up to five years to help improve products and services. It says sensitive information will be removed and privacy safeguards applied before data is kept longer. The page does not anchor “In the coming months” to a clear publication date, so this should not be presented as a dated start point or as proof that every authenticated record is currently retained for exactly five years.

Microsoft says users can delete search data at any time, including data stored for longer periods. The retention language concerns Microsoft’s stated use and storage practices; it is not an independent audit of internal systems.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Assuming “off” means “deleted”

Turn the setting off to stop new additions, then use Clear all activities or the signed-out deletion controls to remove existing entries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Looking in the wrong account

If the dashboard is empty, verify the Microsoft account currently signed in. Searches made under another account will not appear in the account you are checking.

Expecting signed-out searches in the dashboard

Signed-out searches are handled through device-level Bing history and are not shown in the account dashboard. Clear them from the Bing Search History page on the device where they were made.

Confusing Bing history with browser history

Use both sets of controls when necessary. Bing’s account or device record and the browser’s local record have separate scopes.

Assuming personalization has one switch

History, location, language, device characteristics, and other Bing options can all affect relevance. Review the relevant settings instead of relying only on the history toggle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting immediate removal from every system

Clearing history removes it from the dashboard and begins Microsoft’s removal process, but Microsoft says some backup copies may remain temporarily. Avoid treating a cleared dashboard as proof that every internal copy has already vanished.

A practical privacy checklist

  • Identify whether you are signed in and which Microsoft account is active.
  • Open the Privacy Dashboard to inspect eligible account-associated searches.
  • Use Bing Search History to check the Show new searches here setting.
  • Turn that setting off if you do not want new entries added.
  • Use Clear all activities under Browsing and search to clear signed-in account history.
  • Clear signed-out history separately on each relevant device.
  • Clear browser history separately if local records matter.
  • Review Bing location, language, SafeSearch, voice-search, search-suggestion, and personalization settings.
  • Allow for dashboard availability limits and temporary backup retention after deletion.

The bottom line on Bing privacy controls

Bing can use search terms and contextual signals such as location, cookies, time, date, and browser configuration to deliver and personalize search. The Microsoft Privacy Dashboard is the main place to inspect eligible signed-in activity, but it is not a complete record of every search on every device. Turning history off prevents new entries; it does not erase old ones. Clear account history, signed-out device history, and browser history through their separate controls, and treat Microsoft’s retention periods as carefully qualified statements about personalization and authenticated-user data—not as a promise that every copy disappears on a single timetable.
