In India, bike insurance add-ons can change a claim in specific ways: nil depreciation may remove a stated parts-depreciation deduction on an admitted repair, return to invoice may address the gap between IDV and a defined invoice price after qualifying total loss or theft, and roadside assistance can provide help during a breakdown. None guarantees full reimbursement. Your policy schedule, base cover, endorsement wording, deductibles, limits and exclusions determine what applies.
How add-ons affect a claim
An add-on is an endorsement attached to a base policy. Its effect depends on the event it covers and the mechanism it uses: adjusting a deduction, paying a defined amount, reimbursing specified costs, or arranging a service. The add-on label alone does not establish that a claim will be paid.

The examples below concern two-wheeler insurance in India. Policy wording differs by insurer and policy year. An IRDAI-hosted wording cited for return to invoice and engine protection is older, so treat its terms as an illustration of how contractual conditions work—not as a universal or necessarily current promise.

| Add-on | Claim situation | Potential difference | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nil or zero depreciation | Admitted partial-loss repair | May remove the specified depreciation deduction on covered parts. | Does not by itself remove every deductible, limit, excluded item or other policy condition. |
| Return to invoice | Qualifying total loss, constructive total loss or theft, as defined in the wording | May pay a defined difference between IDV and a specified purchase invoice price. | Not an ordinary repair benefit or automatically a refund of every on-road expense. |
| Engine protection | Specified consequential engine, differential or gearbox damage | May cover eligible repair or replacement costs when the stated cause and conditions are met. | The cited wording concerns water ingression or lubricating-oil leakage; it does not mean every flood or mechanical failure is covered. |
| Consumables | Eligible items used or replaced during a covered repair | May reimburse items named in the endorsement. | The underlying own-damage claim may need to be admitted first; item lists, caps and exclusions vary. |
| Roadside assistance | Breakdown or roadside problem | May provide services such as flat-tyre help, towing or fuel assistance. | A service benefit is not, by itself, proof that repair costs are insured. |
For repair claims: nil depreciation and consumables
Nil or zero depreciation
When an own-damage repair claim is admitted, the base policy may apply depreciation to parts under its terms. United India Insurance’s cited two-wheeler endorsement says that, for an admitted partial-loss repair claim, the depreciation specified in Section I of the policy will not apply. That can reduce one source of the policyholder’s share when covered parts would otherwise attract that deduction.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
It does not make repairs free or promise payment for every invoice line. Other policy terms, deductibles, limits and exclusions still matter. The cited wording is specific to that endorsement; check your own policy’s current wording and schedule.
Consumables
Consumables are items used or replaced as part of a repair, but the covered list is policy-specific. United India Insurance’s cited endorsement requires the Section I claim to be admitted before its consumables benefit applies. Check the applicable endorsement for eligible items, caps and exclusions rather than assuming that every fluid, filter or small repair item is included.

For theft or total loss: return to invoice
Return to invoice is intended for qualifying total-loss or theft situations, not routine repair bills. The IRDAI-hosted add-on wording describes payment of the difference between the vehicle’s IDV and a defined “Purchase Invoice Price” after total loss, including theft, or constructive total loss as defined in the policy. The wording defines the purchase price and provides for a calculation in some circumstances if an invoice copy is unavailable.
That mechanism is not necessarily a refund of every on-road expense. TATA AIG’s explainer also describes an IDV-to-invoice or replacement-value gap for specified total-loss or theft situations, while noting that plan details vary. An explainer describes a general function; the policy endorsement controls the claim. Read the IRDAI-hosted add-on wording and confirm the current version and terms that apply to your policy.

For specified mechanical damage: engine protection
The cited IRDAI-hosted wording addresses consequential damage to specified engine, differential or gearbox parts arising from water ingression or lubricating-oil leakage. It also sets conditions and exclusions; the cited wording, for example, excludes consumables and wear and tear and includes a notification condition. Those details should not be treated as universal current rules, because the document is older and insurers’ current endorsements can differ.
Do not assume that engine protection covers every flood-related loss or mechanical failure. The cause of damage, required notification and the exact parts and expenses named in your current endorsement matter.

For a roadside breakdown: assistance is a service, not repair cover
Bajaj General lists roadside-assistance examples such as flat-tyre help, towing and fuel assistance, and directs customers to the policy wording for exclusions. These services can change what help you can request at the roadside; they do not establish that the insurer will reimburse the cost of repairing the bike. Check which events and services your policy includes and how to request them. See Bajaj General’s roadside-assistance overview.

How to compare add-ons before buying or claiming
- Match the add-on to the event. Identify whether you want protection for a partial repair, theft or total loss, specified engine damage, repair consumables, or roadside help.
- Read how the benefit is delivered. Look for a deduction adjustment, a defined IDV-to-invoice payment, reimbursement for named items, or an assistance service. These are not interchangeable.
- Check eligibility and limits. Review any vehicle-age rules, claim-count caps, sub-limits, deductibles and requirement that the base-policy claim be admitted, where stated.
- Check causes and exclusions. Confirm that the covered trigger matches the loss and look for exclusions such as wear and tear, pre-existing damage, excluded items, other available cover and notification requirements.
- Compare the incremental premium with the relevant benefit. Use like-for-like quotations and judge the cost against the protection you actually need. The sources cited here do not establish comparable premiums, limits or average claim savings.
Documents to check on your own policy
- The policy schedule, including which add-ons are selected.
- The current endorsement wording for each selected add-on.
- The base own-damage cover and the definition of an admitted claim.
- Deductibles, limits, sub-limits, eligibility conditions and exclusions.
- Any required notification steps and the process for requesting a roadside service.
Whether an add-on can be added to an already active policy is insurer-specific; a bike-owner discussion raises the question but does not establish a general rule. Ask your insurer or intermediary whether a mid-term change is available and obtain confirmation of the effective date and revised documents before relying on the cover.
