Earl Scruggs is most closely associated with a 1930 Gibson RB-Granada Mastertone. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum says he played the instrument throughout more than 60 years of his career; it entered the museum’s permanent collection after a donation announced on May 22, 2023.
The banjo behind Scruggs’s signature sound
The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum identifies Scruggs’s famed instrument as a Gibson RB-Granada Mastertone made in 1930, which the museum describes as a rarity. According to the museum, Scruggs played it in concerts, on television, and in recording studios with both Flatt & Scruggs and the Earl Scruggs Revue. The museum announced its donation to the permanent collection on May 22, 2023.

That identification answers the familiar question, “Was Earl Scruggs’s banjo a Gibson Granada?” Yes: the museum names the model as an RB-Granada Mastertone. EarlScruggs.com’s biography also identifies the Gibson Granada as the banjo he played over the years, while describing earlier instruments in his life, including an inexpensive mail-order banjo and a Gibson RB-11. Those early-model details come from the artist-site biography, not the museum’s 2023 announcement.

A regional tradition, made newly distinctive
The Granada’s fame is inseparable from the way Scruggs played. His three-finger approach used rolling, syncopated patterns to give the five-string banjo a quick, melodic, driving role. The Earl Scruggs Center describes his developing rolls and timing as a way to emphasize a song’s melody while playing with greater syncopation and force. The National Endowment for the Arts describes his contribution as adding basic syncopation to older regional three-finger picking.

Scruggs’s innovation was rooted in North Carolina musical practice, rather than appearing in isolation. He developed and transformed a regional approach into a style that became a defining sound of bluegrass. The Earl Scruggs Center says the technique came to be known as “Scruggs style.”
How early did the style take shape?
Scruggs was born January 6, 1924, in the Flint Hill community near Shelby, North Carolina. Music was part of family life: his father played banjo and fiddle, his mother played pump organ, and his siblings played guitar and banjo. The Earl Scruggs Center says he began learning on his father’s open-back banjo at four and developed new rolls and timing patterns as he matured. The NEA account says he was emulating a regional three-finger style by six and had invented the basic syncopation of Scruggs Style by ten. These accounts describe his early development differently, so no single childhood age should be treated as an uncontested moment when the style was invented.

- When you get a new banjo, regardless of the brand or model, it is necessary to allow the strings and banjo to have sufficient break-in, because the tension of the strings at standard notes is several tens of pounds. So, pls do as follows: 1. Adjust the strings to standard pitch 2. Use your right hand to gently and repeatedly pull each string 2-3 times 3. Open the tuner again and adjust the strings to standard pitch 4. Repeat steps 1-3 at least 3 times, and ensure that the tension of the strings is fully engaged with the body. PS: Because the strings have a certain degree of resilience and tension, when not played for a long time , they may be a little out of tune.It is a normal phenomenon
- Thicked Bag for Better Protecting: A thicker bag will protect the banjo better, making it a great idea to take for traveling, camping, hiking, or going to the beach. And also perfect for anyone who has always wanted to learn to play this iconic instrument.
The Earl Scruggs Center biography attributes this line to Scruggs: “I pretty well lived and breathed the banjo all the way.” The biography gives no date or interview context for the remark.

Flatt & Scruggs on television and in film
Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt formed Flatt & Scruggs in early 1948. Touring, recordings, and broadcasts helped bring their music to listeners beyond bluegrass circles. In 1962, they provided the banjo-driven theme for the television series The Beverly Hillbillies. Their 1949 recording of Scruggs’s “Foggy Mountain Breakdown” was featured in the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde, introducing the tune to a broader audience.
Later, Scruggs performed with the Earl Scruggs Revue. The Earl Scruggs Center presents his career as a mix of respect for tradition and movement across musical boundaries, and connects his story to the cultural history of the region where he grew up.

What the Granada’s history does—and doesn’t—establish
The museum’s account establishes the instrument’s identity, 1930 manufacture, place in its permanent collection, and Scruggs’s career-long use as described by the museum. It does not identify which specific recordings were made with this Granada. The museum announcement and EarlScruggs.com biography also do not provide a complete chain of ownership before Scruggs. The banjo’s historical importance is clear, but attributing it to a particular recording session or giving a detailed pre-Scruggs provenance story would require additional recording-specific or archival evidence.
