None is a universal one-for-one substitute. The right design depends on whether the system must bridge seconds, sustain a multi-hour outage, provide prime power, or supplement a constrained utility connection.
A battery may keep servers running while another source starts, but battery-only systems need enough stored energy and a dependable recharge plan for a long outage. Gas engines and fuel cells can run longer, yet generally start and accept load more slowly than diesel. A microgrid can combine batteries, generation, controls and grid services, but its uptime is limited by the reliability of every component and by fuel or renewable-energy availability.

Start with the outage you need to survive
Backup architecture should be sized around the interruption, not the generator label. A short utility disturbance may require only ride-through and a controlled transfer. A storm that blocks fuel deliveries or power restoration for days requires dispatchable energy, fuel storage or supply diversity, maintainable equipment and a distribution system that can operate in island mode.
The 2023 NREL report Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Reliability for Backup Electric Power Systems examines outages from one hour to two weeks. Its central reliability lesson is that the resource nameplate is only part of the answer: switches, controls, electrical distribution, maintenance and energy access can determine whether the load actually stays energized. Treating a distributed resource as 100% reliable or counting only fuel availability can materially overstate long-outage performance.

Define the operating role
- Backup-only: The system runs during utility failures and is otherwise idle or tested.
- Prime power: Local generation supplies normal load for extended periods, with the grid as supplemental or standby supply.
- Microgrid: Multiple resources and controls coordinate local generation, storage and loads, potentially connected to or islanded from the utility.
These roles change the economics, maintenance schedule, interconnection requirements and fuel strategy. A battery that is excellent for a 15-minute transfer may be uneconomic as a 24-hour standalone source.
How the main alternatives compare
| Option | Best-supported role | Key limitation or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Lithium-ion battery energy storage | Fast ride-through, short-duration reserve, grid support and a microgrid resource | A June 2022 Schneider Electric assessment says lithium-ion is not well suited to 24-hour backup-only duty; duration and recharge planning determine feasibility. |
| Natural-gas generator | Dispatchable backup or prime power | Pipeline or stored-gas resilience, emissions limits and utility interconnection must be evaluated; startup can be slower than diesel. |
| Combined heat and power | Dispatchable electricity plus useful heat for heating or cooling | Requires a dependable thermal use and a design that can operate when the grid or thermal host is unavailable. |
| PEM or other stationary fuel cell | Backup, prime power or a distributed generation component | Fuel logistics, startup integration and capital and fuel costs remain decisive; the 2022 assessment did not find it an economical universal replacement. |
| Microgrid | Coordination of generation, storage, controls and critical loads; possible grid services | It is an architecture, not a single machine. Islanding capability and duration depend on its components and controls. |
| Solar or wind with storage | Local energy contribution and resource diversification | Output varies with weather and time. The cited reliability work does not establish an all-renewable design as a universal backup solution. |
| UPS batteries | Power-quality support and the bridge while another source starts or transfers | A UPS rating alone does not demonstrate enough energy for a multi-hour or day-long outage. |
Battery energy storage: excellent bridge, difficult long-duration substitute
Battery energy-storage systems respond almost instantly, making them valuable for the interval between loss of utility power and pickup by another source. They can also smooth generator transitions, support voltage and frequency, reduce brief peak demand and participate in grid services when regulations and interconnection allow.
The distinction between power and energy is critical. Battery power, measured in megawatts, determines how much load can be served at once. Stored energy, measured in megawatt-hours, determines how long it can run. A design that can deliver the full data-center load for 10 minutes is not a design that can sustain it overnight.

Schneider Electric’s vendor white paper, Version 2 dated June 9, 2022, concluded that there was “no obvious choice for a direct replacement of diesel generators for a long runtime backup-only application.” It specifically assessed lithium-ion batteries as poorly suited to 24-hour backup by themselves. That is a dated qualitative assessment, not a new 2026 market-wide test, but its engineering caveat remains useful: long duration requires a very large battery, a defined state-of-charge reserve and a way to recharge during the outage.
Recharge may come from the utility after restoration, onsite generation, renewable generation or another microgrid resource. If the outage also removes fuel deliveries or damages transmission, assuming prompt recharge creates a hidden single point of failure.
UPS and BESS are related but not identical
A traditional UPS maintains power quality and bridges the starting or transfer interval. A larger battery energy-storage system may be designed for hours of discharge and grid services. Both require thermal management, fire protection, monitoring, maintenance and a replacement strategy for aging cells. The useful question is not “How big is the battery?” but “How many critical megawatts for how many hours, at what reserve state, with what recharge source?”

Natural-gas engines and CHP: dispatchable alternatives with fuel dependencies
Natural-gas reciprocating engines and microturbines can provide standby or continuous prime power. Compared with diesel, they may reduce onsite liquid-fuel handling and can support longer operation when the gas network remains available. They also bring location-specific permitting, emissions and interconnection requirements.
The gas network is not automatically more resilient than diesel fuel storage. Pipeline pressure, compressor electricity, regional curtailment, weather damage and priority rules can affect availability. A site that relies on gas should establish whether it has firm service, onsite storage, dual-fuel capability or another source for a prolonged disruption.
What CHP adds
Combined heat and power captures engine or turbine waste heat for a useful thermal load. In a data center, recovered heat may support building heating or drive absorption cooling. Using the heat can improve total fuel utilization and make a prime-power project more valuable during normal operation.
CHP is not simply a generator with a bonus feature. The thermal host must need heat or cooling at the times the engine runs, and the system must be designed for conditions in which the utility is unavailable. If the cooling loop, heat sink or controls fail, the electrical generator may have to curtail even when fuel is available.
Transfer and startup planning
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s technical report on distributed generation and CHP in data centers notes that gas- or propane-fired engines, microturbines and fuel cells may take longer to start and pick up load than diesel. A battery or flywheel can bridge that interval, allowing servers and cooling systems to remain within their power-quality limits while the dispatchable source reaches operating speed.

Fuel cells: a different emissions profile, not a universal answer
Stationary fuel cells generate electricity electrochemically rather than by combustion. Depending on the technology and fuel, they can offer low local criteria-pollutant emissions and quiet operation, and they can be configured for backup, prime power or a distributed architecture.

Fuel-cell performance still depends on fuel production, delivery and storage. Hydrogen, reformate or another feedstock has to be available when the grid is down, and the balance-of-plant equipment must start, synchronize and accept the data center’s changing load. A fuel cell may need a battery or other ride-through device for the same transfer reason as a gas engine.
Schneider Electric’s June 2022 comparison said proton-exchange-membrane (PEM) fuel cells needed lower capital and fuel costs to become economically feasible in the assessed application. Use that conclusion with its date and attribution; it is not a current universal price claim. The EPA report includes a historical PEM-versus-diesel emissions example, but emissions depend on the specific technology, fuel pathway, operating hours and the electricity or heat being displaced.
Microgrids: an architecture that combines resources
A microgrid coordinates local generation, storage, protection, controls and selected loads. It may include batteries, gas engines, fuel cells, solar, wind, CHP and a utility connection. A microgrid controller can balance resources, shed noncritical loads, maintain voltage and frequency, and direct the system into or out of island operation.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Electricity describes a worked example in which a data center requires 5 MW but existing lines can deliver only 4 MW. An illustrative microgrid could provide the additional 1 MW, avoiding dependence on a major transmission upgrade while also offering grid services. The figures describe that example, not an average data center or a guaranteed cost or construction schedule.
DOE officials Chukwuemeka Obikwelu and Dan Ton explain that microgrids can provide services to the main grid that help maintain operating conditions such as proper voltage and frequency. Those services do not mean every microgrid can island indefinitely. Islanding requires suitable switchgear, protection studies, controls, black-start capability and enough energy and fuel for the intended duration.
Renewables inside a microgrid
Solar photovoltaic and wind generation can reduce fuel use and diversify supply, but their output varies. Batteries can shift renewable energy and cover short gaps; dispatchable generation may still be needed through extended cloudy, calm or nighttime periods. A reliability study that includes solar, wind and lithium-ion BESS does not by itself validate an all-renewable backup design for every climate or outage scenario.

Reliability is a system property
Specify the entire power path, from the utility breaker to the server rack. Review normal and emergency switchgear, automatic transfer or static-transfer equipment, protection coordination, controls, cooling, fuel systems, battery thermal management, communications and maintenance access.
Recommended Free Tools
- Energy availability: Calculate fuel, battery state of charge and renewable output for the planned outage, including reserve margins and recharge time.
- Startup sequence: Verify which loads start first, how much inrush current they draw and whether a battery or flywheel must bridge the transition.
- Load hierarchy: Separate truly critical IT and cooling loads from systems that can be shed to extend runtime.
- Common-mode failures: Look for shared gas service, shared controls, single switchboards, common cooling loops and network dependencies.
- Testing and maintenance: Exercise islanding, black start, transfer, load shedding and resynchronization under realistic load; maintain spares and service access.
A practical selection process
- Set the design outage: Model interruptions from minutes through the duration relevant to the site. The NREL study’s one-hour-to-two-week range is a useful planning envelope, not a guarantee for any technology.
- Classify the role: Decide whether the project is backup-only, prime power, capacity supplementation or a full microgrid.
- Map critical load: Record steady, peak, inrush and cooling requirements, then identify loads that can be shed.
- Choose a bridging source: Size UPS batteries, BESS or a flywheel for the time needed to start and transfer to slower generation.
- Secure long-duration energy: Validate gas firmness or storage, fuel-cell feedstock, battery recharge and renewable availability against the outage scenario.
- Design controls and distribution: Specify islanding, protection, synchronization, black start, communications and manual fallback modes.
- Check local constraints: Confirm emissions, noise, fire protection, utility interconnection, building and environmental requirements for the actual jurisdiction.
- Test the complete system: Demonstrate transfer, sustained operation, fuel or recharge logistics, failure of a component and safe return to grid service.
Common design mistakes
- Calling any battery a generator replacement: A UPS bridge and a 24-hour energy source are different designs.
- Counting only nameplate megawatts: Startup limits, cooling, harmonics, controls and distribution can reduce usable capacity.
- Assuming gas is always available: Validate contracts, pressure, backup fuel and regional outage conditions.
- Ignoring transfer time: Pair slower generators or fuel cells with a bridge sized for the real startup sequence.
- Treating a microgrid as a product: Reliability comes from the configured resources, controls and maintenance program.
- Using historical examples as current market data: The EPA deployment examples are historical, and the Schneider comparison is from 2022; neither supplies a current apples-to-apples cost ranking.
Frequently asked questions
Can batteries replace data-center backup generators?
They can replace some generator functions for short interruptions and can form part of a longer-duration system. A battery-only design for a day-long outage requires sufficient megawatt-hours, thermal and fire controls, a defined reserve and dependable recharge. Schneider Electric’s 2022 assessment did not consider lithium-ion well suited to 24-hour backup-only duty.
Are fuel cells cleaner than diesel?
They can have a different local-emissions profile, but the result depends on fuel, technology, operating hours and what electricity or heat is displaced. The historical EPA comparison should not be treated as a current universal emissions factor.
Does a microgrid guarantee continuous operation?
No. A microgrid can coordinate resources and may island, but its duration and reliability depend on generation, storage, fuel or renewable availability, controls, switchgear, cooling and maintenance.
What is the most practical alternative for a long outage?
There is no universal answer. Dispatchable gas or CHP may suit sites with resilient fuel and a useful thermal load; fuel cells may fit a distributed design with workable fuel logistics; batteries are usually the bridge or short-duration resource. The decision must follow the outage duration and the site’s utility, fuel, emissions and interconnection constraints.
