Automation is changing logistics work, but it does not mean that logistics jobs as a whole are disappearing. In the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment in transportation and warehousing to grow 3.0%—198,800 jobs—from 2024 to 2034. Within that broad industry, warehousing and storage is projected to grow more slowly, by 1.4%, or 26,000 jobs. The practical takeaway for workers is to prepare for changing tasks: build confidence with workplace software and equipment, and strengthen problem-solving, communication, adaptability, and the ability to learn new processes.
What automation changes in logistics work
Logistics automation includes software and equipment that help coordinate or carry out work such as storing, moving, tracking, and handling goods. BLS identifies warehouse management systems, automated guided vehicles, robots, and AI-based systems among technologies warehousing firms are increasingly implementing to improve efficiency.

These technologies can change how tasks are divided between people and systems. A worker may spend less time on a manual or repetitive step and more time monitoring a process, resolving exceptions, using equipment, or coordinating with colleagues. Which tasks change—and whether a particular employer adds, reorganizes, or reduces positions—depends on the technology, workplace, and adoption decisions. The available national projections do not measure task changes for every logistics occupation.

It is also useful to distinguish between the technology a business adopts and the work a person does around it. A warehouse management system, for example, is a technology BLS identifies as part of the broader trend; that does not establish that every warehouse uses the same system or that every worker will operate one in the same way. The relevant question for an individual is how the local employer has organized the work and which tasks are changing.
What the U.S. employment outlook says
The BLS projections below cover the United States from 2024 to 2034. They describe expected employment change, not a guarantee for an individual worker or a forecast for other countries.
| Employment measure | Projected change, 2024–2034 | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Transportation and warehousing industry | 3.0% growth; 198,800 jobs added | The broad industry outlook, which includes more than warehousing and storage. |
| Warehousing and storage industry | 1.4% growth; 26,000 jobs added | Slower-than-average growth; BLS expects productivity gains from technology to restrain labor demand. |
| Stockers and order fillers | 8.5% growth; 235,000 jobs added | An occupational projection that illustrates why automation should not be equated with the elimination of all logistics work. |
All figures are U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projections for 2024–2034, published in 2026. The broad transportation and warehousing figure and the narrower warehousing and storage figure describe different scopes, so they should not be treated as interchangeable. The stocker and order-filler figure is an occupation-level projection, not a warehouse-industry total. See the BLS employment projections for the underlying occupational and industry outlook.
For warehousing and storage, BLS connects the slower projected growth partly to productivity improvements from warehouse management systems, automated guided vehicles, robots, and AI-based systems. It says, “The productivity gains stemming from the adoption of these technologies are expected to limit labor demand.” That is an expectation about the pace of industry employment growth—not a claim that the sector will shrink or that a specified number of workers will be replaced.
The different figures answer different questions. The 3.0% rate describes projected change across the transportation and warehousing industry; the 1.4% rate describes the warehousing and storage portion. The stocker and order-filler figure is an occupation projection, so it cannot be used as a direct count of warehouse positions or as a measure of how many tasks automation will change. Read together, the figures show why broad statements about “logistics jobs” can obscure variation across industries and occupations.

Why the effects differ between workplaces
Logistics covers different settings, tasks, technologies, and labor arrangements. A warehouse, a port terminal, and a transportation operation do not adopt identical systems or reorganize work in the same way. Even within one setting, the degree of automation can vary.
A 2024 U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) review found that all 10 of the largest U.S. container ports had adopted some form of automation technology, but adoption and effects varied by port and terminal. Stakeholders reported possible job changes or reductions alongside improved safety, simpler tasks, greater efficiency, and new higher-skilled roles. Those are reported effects and experiences, not a universal causal estimate for ports or logistics as a whole. Technology choices, local conditions, labor agreements, and implementation decisions all matter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe port findings help explain why “automation takes jobs” and “automation creates jobs” are both too simple as blanket descriptions. A technology can change or reduce demand for some tasks while creating a need for other work. The GAO review does not establish which outcome an individual worker or employer will experience. Read the GAO report on automation at U.S. ports for its scope and findings.
Routine material handling, coordination, equipment operation, and technical or analytical work may be affected in different ways, but available evidence does not quantify displacement by task across all logistics occupations. It therefore cannot support a dependable ranking of which roles will be lost first or which are certain to remain unchanged. Workers should use local job duties and employer information to understand their own exposure rather than treating a port example or industry projection as a prediction for every workplace.
Skills that help workers adapt
No single skill makes a worker immune to job change, and the available evidence does not identify one credential that guarantees employment. A useful preparation plan combines practical technology use with the human and process skills needed to keep work moving when systems, priorities, or procedures change.

- Critical and analytical thinking: Build the habit of assessing information and spotting inconsistencies rather than relying on a system output without context.
- Adaptability and active learning: Be ready to learn revised procedures, tools, and responsibilities as operations change. GAO identifies active learning and critical thinking among skills important to in-demand jobs.
- Communication and interpersonal skills: Clear speaking, listening, and coordination help workers handle handoffs, explain exceptions, and work across teams.
- Attention to detail and process awareness: Accurate records and careful execution matter when work is coordinated through digital systems and connected processes.
The BLS skills resource draws on O*NET and covers 17 skill categories for occupations included in BLS projections. It is a broad occupational lens, not a logistics-only training prescription. Its categories include adaptability, computer and information technology, critical and analytical thinking, communication, detail orientation, interpersonal skills, mechanical skills, project management, speaking and listening, and problem-solving and decision-making. Use the BLS occupation-level skills tables to compare the skills associated with specific occupations rather than assuming every logistics job requires the same mix.

These categories are best treated as a way to compare occupations, not as a checklist that every worker must master at once. A role’s actual requirements depend on its tasks and workplace. For instance, the skills relevant to operating equipment may differ from those used to coordinate work or analyze information. When comparing jobs or planning a next step, use occupation-level information alongside actual vacancy descriptions and employer guidance.
How to choose useful training
GAO’s 2022 review of workforce automation is broader than logistics, but it offers practical criteria for judging training. It recommends attention to in-demand skills, accessible programs, adequate investment, and collaboration among workforce stakeholders. It does not endorse a particular course or credential.
- Start with the job you want or already do. Identify its actual tasks and the software, equipment, safety practices, and coordination responsibilities used by local employers.
- Check local demand. Look at current vacancies and speak with employers, workforce organizations, or relevant training providers. Confirm that the course teaches skills employers in your area request, rather than relying on a broad promise about automation-proof work.
- Compare what programs teach. Check whether instruction covers the relevant technology and processes, and whether it includes practice that resembles the work. A course title alone does not show that it fits a particular role.
- Check accessibility and support. Consider schedule, location or delivery format, entry requirements, costs, and what help is available to complete the program. GAO emphasizes that training needs to be accessible and adequately supported.
- Ask about coordination and next steps. Find out whether the program connects learners with employers or other workforce resources and how its training maps to available roles. GAO points to collaboration among workforce participants as part of an effective response.
Employer-supported instruction, local workforce resources, and role-specific practice are sensible places to look, but their value depends on the match to a worker’s goals and local opportunities. The GAO review of automation, skills, and training discusses the broader evidence and recommendations.
When weighing options, compare more than the credential name. Ask what skills are taught, whether the program is accessible to you, whether it has adequate support, and whether there is an opportunity to practice relevant work. Check costs and any other practical requirements before enrolling; the evidence cited here does not provide a standard price, name a preferred provider, or show that one credential works everywhere. A low-cost or convenient course can still be a poor fit if it does not map to local vacancies, while a course with a relevant title is not proof that employers value it.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Training should also be seen as one part of workforce preparation, not a guarantee against change. GAO’s recommendations emphasize coordination among workforce participants, so it can be useful to ask how a provider works with employers or local workforce organizations. A course’s fit with actual job duties and opportunities matters more than an unsupported promise that it will make work “automation-proof.”

The Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development’s 2025 Logistics Services and Transportation Sector Skills Dictionary defines “warehouse automation application” as applying computer software and/or automated equipment to improve warehouse operations. Its proficiency description ranges from basic use to implementation, evaluation, and strategy. This is a Saudi sector framework, not a global standard or evidence about U.S. vacancies. It is useful as an illustration of how a broad capability can involve several levels of responsibility rather than one universal qualification. The Saudi logistics and transportation skills dictionary provides the framework’s context.
The levels also offer a useful way to think about development without assuming that every worker needs to move toward strategy or system implementation. Depending on the job, basic use may be the relevant capability; another role may call for evaluating or implementing a process. The dictionary illustrates a progression in one national sector framework, not a universal ladder, required credential, or promise of promotion.
What workers can reasonably conclude
For U.S. workers, the latest figures cited here project growth in transportation and warehousing overall through 2034, with slower growth in warehousing and storage. The port evidence shows that automation can bring a mix of reported operational benefits and workforce changes. Neither source can tell an individual whether a particular job is secure or at risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will automation eliminate logistics jobs?
The evidence here does not support that conclusion. BLS projects U.S. transportation and warehousing employment to grow 3.0%, or 198,800 jobs, from 2024 to 2034, while warehousing and storage is projected to grow more slowly at 1.4%. These are industry projections, not guarantees for individual roles. At ports, GAO found varied effects, including reported job changes or reductions as well as safety, efficiency, and higher-skilled roles.
Which logistics jobs are most at risk from automation?
Available evidence does not quantify displacement by task across logistics occupations or establish a reliable ranking of jobs by future losses. Material handling, coordination, equipment operation, and technical or analytical work may change differently depending on the workplace, technology, and adoption decisions. Check the actual duties and local employer requirements for a role rather than treating a national projection as an individual prediction.
What skills should logistics workers build?
Useful areas include comfort with workplace software and automated equipment, adaptability, active learning, critical and analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, and attention to detail. The mix depends on the occupation. BLS skills tables can help compare occupations, but they are not a logistics-only prescription.
Do workers need to learn coding or earn a specific credential?
The sources do not recommend that every logistics worker become a programmer, and they do not identify a credential that guarantees employment. Compare training by the skills it teaches, its accessibility and support, practical experience, and fit with local vacancies and employer needs.
How much should logistics skills training cost?
The cited evidence does not provide a standard cost or endorse a specific course or provider. Check a program’s costs, schedule, entry requirements, support, and relevance to local jobs before enrolling.
The Bottom Line
Automation is changing logistics tasks, but the evidence does not show that logistics work as a whole is disappearing. Use occupation-specific job information to identify relevant skills, and choose training for its practical fit with local employer demand—not for an “automation-proof” promise.
