What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Automatic content recognition (ACR) is the technology that lets a smart TV identify what is playing by analyzing brief audio or video samples and matching the resulting fingerprint with a content database. It can recognize programming from the TV tuner, an antenna, a cable box, a streaming device, or physical media—not merely which app you opened.
Manufacturers may use those viewing signals for recommendations, audience measurement, advertising, or other purposes described in their privacy notices. The exact inputs, data collected, retention, recipients, and controls differ by brand, model, software version, and region, so an ACR opt-out is a useful privacy step but not a guarantee that the television or its apps collect nothing else.

What ACR does—and what it does not do
ACR is automated content matching. While you watch, the television periodically analyzes a small portion of the sound or picture, creates a mathematical signature (often called a fingerprint), and compares it with entries in a catalog or with information held on the manufacturer’s servers. If there is a match, the service can associate the program, advertisement, channel, or other content with the television or household.
This is different from simply logging that Netflix, a game console, or a broadcast input was selected. An app-use log says which software or input was active; ACR attempts to identify the actual material on screen. It is also not a person watching through the panel. The implementation may process a snippet locally, send a signature, or use another design. The available evidence does not establish that every system sends raw video, samples at the same interval, or recognizes every program.

A regional Samsung Viewing Information Services notice, effective in 2020 and published in Portuguese, describes generating a unique video signature from television frames when the service is enabled. It is useful corroboration of how one implementation was described, not proof of a current worldwide policy for every Samsung television.
How a smart TV recognizes content
- Sampling: The set analyzes brief portions of the audio or image currently playing. An FTC PrivacyCon transcript from February 28, 2018, described televisions taking small snippets to assess what viewers were watching.
- Signature creation: Software converts characteristics of those snippets into a compact signature. The signature is designed for matching, rather than being a normal recording that a viewer can play back.
- Catalog matching: The signature is compared with a database or server-side service containing known programs, advertisements, channels, or other media. An unmatched clip may simply produce no identification.
- Use of the result: A match can feed a recommendation engine, audience-measurement report, advertising system, or another feature listed in the television maker’s notice.
- Association: Depending on the service, the result may be linked to device identifiers, account information, household attributes, or advertising identifiers. The particular identifiers and retention periods must come from that model’s notice.
These stages are a general pattern, not a universal specification. A manufacturer can change the sampling method, matching catalog, or server arrangements through software updates or regional policy changes.
Which sources can ACR cover?
Because ACR analyzes the signal displayed by the television, it may work even when the content did not originate in a built-in smart-TV app. Consumer Reports has described coverage that can include the following sources, while an FTC account of the VIZIO matter listed a similar range:
| Source on the screen | What the evidence supports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Over-the-air antenna or internal tuner | Broadcast programming may be sampled and matched. | Recognition depends on the model, market and available catalog. |
| Cable service or a set-top box | ACR may identify content arriving through a cable box or other set-top device. | It is not limited to the TV’s own channel guide. |
| Streaming service or attached streaming device | Programs shown through built-in apps or connected streaming hardware may be included. | The TV may identify the picture without receiving the app’s internal account data; the two data flows are separate questions. |
| DVD or Blu-ray player | Physical discs have been included in descriptions of external-source recognition. | Every title will not necessarily be in the matching database. |
| Other HDMI or media inputs | The same principle can apply to other displayed signals. | Do not assume every input or every manufacturer supports recognition. |
The FTC’s VIZIO description specifically referred to cable, broadband, set-top boxes, DVD, over-the-air broadcasts and streaming devices. That list documents the scope alleged in one enforcement case; it does not mean every current television recognizes all of those sources.

Why companies enable ACR
Recommendations and discovery
A TV can use identified programs to make its home screen, “what to watch” row, or search suggestions more relevant. Disabling viewing-information collection may make those recommendations less tailored, even if the basic apps and channels continue to work.
Advertising and measurement
The same viewing signal can support audience measurement or interest-based advertising. Consumer Reports has identified recommendations and ad targeting as common purposes. A viewing record can be more informative than an app-open event because it may reveal the actual show, commercial or channel displayed.
The VIZIO enforcement example
In a 2017 announcement, the Federal Trade Commission and the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General said VIZIO collected viewing histories from 11 million consumer televisions. The agencies said the information was combined with demographic attributes and sold to third parties, including for advertising across devices. VIZIO agreed to a $2.2 million settlement. The FTC release described $1.5 million for the FTC and $1 million for New Jersey, with $300,000 suspended; those components should not be added as though the entire $2.5 million was paid.
This was a specific historical enforcement record, not a finding that every television maker follows the same practice. It demonstrates why the collection purpose, sharing language and opt-out controls in your own model’s notice matter.

What information may be associated with viewing
Policies differ, but the categories to look for are consistent:
- Content details: Identified programs, channels, advertisements or other displayed material, sometimes with time or duration information.
- Device and household identifiers: The notice may describe a device ID, account ID, IP address or similar identifier used to connect viewing activity with a television or household.
- Audience attributes: Some services describe demographic or interest information used for personalization or advertising.
- Recipients and purposes: The policy should say whether data is used by the manufacturer, service providers, measurement partners, advertisers or other third parties.
Do not infer that a particular policy collects every category above. Read the notice for the exact model and country. A signature-based system also does not automatically mean that a complete video archive leaves the home; the available descriptions do not support that blanket claim.
How widespread is the practice?
At the FTC’s PrivacyCon on February 28, 2018, Katie McInnis of Consumers Union said, “All the models that we tested want to watch what you’re watching.” The statement referred to a test of five television models at that time, not to every television sold today. The same presentation reported a Consumer Reports/Consumers Union reader poll in which 43% of respondents did not know that smart TVs transmitted data to manufacturers and business partners. That was a reader poll, not a representative current estimate of all TV owners.

How to find and disable ACR
There is no safe universal menu path. Labels and locations vary, and manufacturers sometimes rename the service. Use this process rather than following clicks for a different model.
- Identify the exact set. Record the brand, model number, purchase region, year if known and software version. The same brand can use different controls in different countries or product generations.
- Open privacy or data settings. From the TV’s Settings menu, inspect sections named Privacy, Terms, Smart TV experience, Data services, Advertising or Support. Also check the privacy setup shown during first-time installation.
- Search for viewing-related labels. Look for “viewing information,” “viewing data,” “interest-based advertising,” “personalized ads,” or the manufacturer’s named viewing-information service. ACR may not appear as the acronym.
- Read the description before switching it off. Note what inputs are covered, what data is collected, who receives it and which features will change. This is where the model-specific policy is more authoritative than a generic guide.
- Turn off the viewing-information control. Confirm the choice when prompted. If the TV offers separate switches for ACR and advertising personalization, decide on each one; disabling one does not necessarily disable the other.
- Check related setup screens. Review voice services, device-recognition, app privacy and advertising-ID controls separately. They are different data flows and may remain enabled after ACR is disabled.
- Verify after updates or a reset. Revisit the privacy page after a major software update or factory reset, because setup choices can be requested again or labels can change. Keep a note or screenshot of the setting you selected.
Consumer Reports maintains platform-specific guidance for major smart-TV systems, but even that guidance should be checked against the owner’s manual and current manufacturer documentation for the exact model and region.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What turning ACR off changes—and what it cannot promise
- It can reduce ACR-related viewing collection. The TV should stop using the particular viewing-information service covered by the switch, subject to the wording of its notice.
- Recommendations may become less personalized. Some “for you” rows or program suggestions may use less viewing history.
- It does not make the television completely private. Apps, accounts, diagnostics, voice features, crash reports, network services and advertising systems can have separate settings and policies.
- It does not necessarily erase past records. An opt-out generally controls future collection; deletion rights, retention and account procedures must be checked in the applicable notice.
- It does not require a special router accessory. The practical first step is the TV’s own privacy control. Network-level blocking may affect normal services and is not a substitute for understanding the manufacturer’s settings.
How to compare two smart-TV platforms
A meaningful comparison is about controls and data practices, not a simple “private” or “not private” label. Use this checklist when evaluating models:
| Question | What to record |
|---|---|
| Which inputs are covered? | Note whether the notice mentions tuner broadcasts, cable or set-top boxes, streaming apps or devices, discs and other external inputs. |
| What is collected? | Record the stated viewing details, device identifiers, account links and any demographic or interest information. |
| Why is it used? | Separate recommendations, diagnostics, measurement, advertising and other purposes instead of treating them as one category. |
| Who receives it? | Look for the manufacturer, service providers, measurement companies, advertisers and other listed recipients. |
| Are controls separate? | Check whether ACR, personalized recommendations, advertising personalization and voice or app data have independent switches. |
| What happens after opt-out? | Record which features become less personalized and whether the notice explains deletion, retention or account choices. |
The available evidence supports variation in all of these areas, but it does not support a current overall brand ranking. A model with a clearly labeled control may be easier to manage than one with a vague label, even when both provide similar functions.
Best Value
If recommendations or ads continue after you opt out
Check that the correct control was disabled
Some sets have one switch for viewing information and another for interest-based advertising. Reopen the privacy page and confirm both choices if your goal is to limit ACR-driven advertising.
Separate TV behavior from app behavior
An application can personalize its own home screen or ads using account activity independently of the television’s ACR service. Review the app’s privacy controls and account settings rather than assuming the TV switch governs them.
Allow for cached or previously collected data
Existing recommendations can remain visible until the service refreshes. An opt-out is not necessarily an instant deletion request. Consult the model’s notice for available access or deletion procedures.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Recheck after software changes
Updates, a new regional policy or a factory reset can return you to a setup screen. Confirm the setting again and save the current help-page instructions for your model.
The practical takeaway
Think of ACR as a viewing detector: it samples what appears on the screen, creates a signature and tries to identify the content, including content from sources outside the TV’s built-in apps. That identification can improve recommendations, support measurement and feed advertising systems. To limit it, find the model-specific viewing-information or ACR control, read what it covers and disable related personalization switches separately. Keep expectations realistic: the opt-out narrows one collection channel, while the television, its apps and connected accounts may still process other data.
