On Apple TV 4K, Apple Music offers High Quality (AAC), Lossless (ALAC) and, for eligible songs and compatible equipment, Dolby Atmos. Apple’s Apple TV Music guide identifies lossless playback up to 24-bit/48 kHz. Apple’s September 2026 support article additionally says Hi-Res Lossless is available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), but the retrieved Apple documentation does not state the exact maximum Hi-Res sample rate for those models.
The Apple TV 4K hardware specification lists additional codecs such as FLAC, AIFF, WAV, MP3, AC-3 and E-AC-3. That is a device-level compatibility list, not a list of Apple Music quality choices. What you actually hear depends on the song, your Apple TV 4K generation, tvOS, network and HDMI-connected speakers, sound bar or receiver.

Apple Music formats on Apple TV 4K at a glance
| Apple Music option | Format or presentation | What Apple documents | What determines playback |
|---|---|---|---|
| High Quality | AAC | Apple TV Music settings identify High Quality (AAC). | Selected quality setting, available connection and song availability. |
| Lossless | ALAC | Apple’s guide describes Lossless (ALAC) up to 24-bit/48 kHz. | Song availability, network conditions and speaker capability. |
| Hi-Res Lossless | Higher-resolution ALAC | Apple’s September 2026 support article says it is available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). | The exact maximum sample rate for Apple TV 4K is not stated in the retrieved Apple documents. |
| Dolby Atmos | Spatial Dolby audio | Available for supported songs with compatible HomePod, television, sound bar or AV receiver setups. | The song and the entire output chain, including HDMI routing. |
These are not interchangeable specifications. AAC and ALAC describe codecs; 24-bit/48 kHz describes audio resolution; Dolby Atmos describes a spatial presentation. A track can be lossless and also have a Dolby Atmos version, but those labels answer different questions.

What the Apple TV Music settings actually offer
High Quality (AAC)
High Quality is Apple Music’s compressed AAC option on Apple TV 4K. AAC is designed to deliver smaller streams than lossless audio while retaining the setting’s intended listening quality. The Apple TV guide presents it as a selectable Audio Quality choice rather than as a hardware specification.
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
Lossless (ALAC)
Lossless uses Apple Lossless Audio Codec, or ALAC. In Apple’s Apple TV Music settings documentation, the lossless choice is described as supporting files up to 24-bit/48 kHz. The setting does not mean every song is supplied at that resolution: lossless versions must exist for the particular recording, and playback also depends on the network and connected speakers.
Apple’s guide states: “Support for lossless files depends on song availability, network conditions, and speaker capability.” Read that as a condition of the feature, not a promise that selecting Lossless forces every stream to 24-bit/48 kHz.
Dolby Atmos
Dolby Atmos is a separate audio option for songs that have an Atmos mix. It is not a higher bitrate version of AAC or ALAC. Atmos carries spatial information that compatible equipment renders around the listener. Apple describes supported arrangements using one or two HomePod speakers, a Dolby Atmos-capable television, a compatible sound bar with a compatible television, or a Dolby Atmos-enabled AV receiver. HomePod mini does not support Dolby Atmos. See Apple’s requirements at Apple’s Dolby Atmos support page.

Yes, Apple documents lossless playback on Apple TV 4K, but two statements need to be kept separate. The Apple TV Music guide lists Lossless (ALAC) up to 24-bit/48 kHz. Apple’s current lossless support article says Hi-Res Lossless is available only on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later), as documented at Apple’s lossless support page.

Apple’s broader catalogue description says most Apple Music music has been encoded in ALAC from 16-bit/44.1 kHz through 24-bit/192 kHz. That is a description of catalogue encodings, not a guaranteed Apple TV output ceiling. The retrieved Apple documents do not clearly identify the precise maximum Hi-Res sample rate delivered by Apple TV 4K, so it would be inaccurate to claim that every third-generation-or-newer Apple TV 4K outputs the full 24-bit/192 kHz range.
Generation matters
If Hi-Res Lossless is important, verify that the device is an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later). Apple’s generation-specific statement does not establish the same availability for earlier Apple TV models. Also update tvOS before troubleshooting a missing option; Apple’s setup guidance treats current software as part of the lossless configuration.
Apple TV 4K hardware formats are a different list
Apple’s technical specifications for Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) list these audio formats:
Recommended Free Tools
- HE-AAC
- AAC up to 320 kb/s
- Protected AAC
- MP3 up to 320 kb/s
- MP3 VBR
- Apple Lossless
- FLAC
- AIFF
- WAV
- AC-3 (Dolby Digital 5.1)
- E-AC-3 (Dolby Digital Plus 7.1)
- Dolby Atmos
Those entries describe what the device can decode or pass through at the platform level. They do not mean that Apple Music presents FLAC, WAV or MP3 as selectable streaming modes. Apple Music’s Audio Quality controls are the service choices described earlier: AAC, ALAC lossless and Dolby audio options. Consult the complete Apple TV 4K technical specification when you are checking another app, local media or a different audio source.

How Apple TV 4K chooses the quality you hear
Apple says Apple TV 4K automatically plays the highest-quality audio supported by both the home-entertainment setup and the available content. That means the setting alone does not determine the final signal.
- Content: The recording must have the relevant lossless or Atmos version in Apple Music.
- Apple TV model and software: Hi-Res Lossless availability is limited by the Apple TV 4K generation specified by Apple.
- Network: Lossless streams require conditions that can sustain their data rate; Apple explicitly lists network conditions as a dependency.
- Output capability: The television, sound bar, receiver or HomePod arrangement must support the format being requested.
- Signal path: HDMI routing can determine whether a compatible receiver or sound bar receives the intended Dolby signal.
Bitrate, sample rate, codec and spatial format should therefore be checked independently. For example, “AAC up to 320 kb/s” in a hardware specification is not the same claim as “Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz” in the Music settings guide.
How to enable lossless Apple Music playback
Apple’s lossless support instructions use an AV receiver connected by HDMI. Follow this sequence on a current Apple TV 4K:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Update the Apple TV 4K to the latest available tvOS version.
- Connect the Apple TV 4K to your AV receiver with HDMI. Use an audio chain whose speakers or receiver can reproduce the selected format.
- Open Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality.
- Select the lossless option.
- Play a recording that offers a lossless version and allow the system to negotiate the highest quality supported by the content and connected equipment.
If the lossless choice is unavailable or the result is not what you expect, first check the Apple TV 4K generation, tvOS update, song availability and network. Do not use the 24-bit/192 kHz catalogue range as proof that the Apple TV itself is outputting that rate; Apple does not specify that ceiling in the retrieved documents.

Does Apple TV 4K play Dolby Atmos music?
It can play Dolby Atmos music when the song has an Atmos version and the output system supports it. Apple’s supported configurations include one or two HomePod speakers, a compatible television, a compatible sound bar used with a compatible television, or a Dolby Atmos-capable AV receiver. HomePod mini is excluded from Atmos support.
Sound bar or AV receiver wiring
For a sound bar or receiver, Apple recommends connecting Apple TV 4K directly to the sound bar or receiver by HDMI, then connecting that unit to the television. Apple says the high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos signal from Apple TV 4K does not work over ARC connections. The detailed wiring guidance is at Apple’s Apple TV 4K setup instructions.
Why an Atmos-capable setting may still produce ordinary audio
An Atmos toggle cannot create an Atmos mix where none exists. Apple TV 4K evaluates the song and the output chain together, so a standard stereo or lossless version may play when the selected track lacks Atmos, when the television or receiver cannot accept it, or when the HDMI route does not provide the required bandwidth.
Troubleshooting by symptom
Lossless is missing from Audio Quality
- Confirm that you are using an Apple TV 4K rather than assuming every Apple TV model exposes the same choices.
- Install the latest tvOS update.
- Reopen Settings > Apps > Music > Audio Quality after the update.
- Check that the connected receiver or speakers are capable of the intended playback mode.
Apple’s documentation does not provide a single universal resolution ceiling for every Apple TV 4K generation, so do not infer one from the Music catalogue’s maximum encoding range.
A song does not play in lossless quality
- Verify that the specific song has a lossless version; catalogue availability varies by recording.
- Check the network connection, since Apple lists network conditions as a lossless dependency.
- Inspect the speaker or receiver path rather than judging only by the Audio Quality menu.
Atmos is not reaching the sound bar or receiver
- Confirm that the song offers Dolby Atmos.
- Verify that the sound bar or receiver and television support the required Dolby format.
- Use the direct HDMI arrangement Apple recommends instead of relying on ARC for Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos.
- If the speakers are HomePod mini, use a non-Atmos mode because that model does not support Atmos.
Which option should you select?
| Your priority | Appropriate Apple Music choice | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Lower data use and broad compatibility | High Quality (AAC) | Your playback system accepts AAC and the network is limited. |
| Bit-for-bit music playback where available | Lossless (ALAC) | The song has a lossless version and your network and speakers can sustain it. |
| Higher-resolution catalogue files | Hi-Res Lossless, where Apple makes it available | Apple TV 4K (3rd generation or later); Apple’s exact output ceiling is not stated in the cited documents. |
| Immersive spatial presentation | Dolby Atmos | An Atmos version of the song and a compatible HDMI, television, sound bar, receiver or HomePod setup. |
For most Apple TV 4K owners, the practical decision is between AAC for efficiency, ALAC lossless for compatible two-channel or surround playback, and Atmos when the complete system is designed for spatial audio. The hardware codec list is useful when evaluating other apps or local files, but it should not be mistaken for an Apple Music streaming menu.
