Atlantic weather affects Greenland through a chain of circulation, moisture and temperature changes—not a simple rule that every warm storm produces rain. Blocking highs, cyclones and atmospheric rivers steer air toward different coasts and elevations; the temperature profile from cloud to surface then determines whether precipitation arrives as rain, wet snow or dry snow. The resulting snowfall, melt and glacier discharge together determine whether the ice sheet gains or loses mass.
The latest annual assessment available here, NOAA’s 2025 Arctic Report Card, estimated a net Greenland Ice Sheet loss of −129 ± 50 gigatonnes (Gt) in 2025. That loss was smaller than the −219 ± 16 Gt per year average for 2003–2024, but the ice sheet remained in its long-term net-loss trend.

Why an Atlantic storm does not have one Greenland outcome
A storm arriving from the Atlantic can carry warm, moisture-rich air, but its effect depends on where the circulation sends that air and how the atmosphere is layered above the ice. A flow aimed at the southeast coast may rise rapidly over steep terrain, cool and produce snow at high elevations while rain falls nearer sea level. A different storm track can send milder air over lower western or southern terrain, where the same moisture is more likely to fall as rain or melt existing snow.
Season changes the background state as well. In summer, a high-pressure block can hold a storm track south of Greenland and slowly transport moist air across the ice sheet. In autumn, blocking near the Nordic Seas can redirect westerly flow toward the steep southeast margin. Atmospheric rivers are another delivery mechanism: they are narrow corridors of concentrated moisture, and in Greenland they can produce substantial snowfall as well as atmospheric warming. To understand an event, identify its circulation pattern, location, elevation and vertical temperature structure before assigning it a precipitation type or an ice-sheet effect.

How Atlantic circulation steers moisture toward Greenland
Summer blocking and snowfall in central Greenland
Pettersen and colleagues examined central Greenland snowfall in June–August and found that the vast majority of snowfall events coincided with Euro-Atlantic blocking. In the summer pattern, a persistent blocking anticyclone over southern Greenland slowly advected warm, moist air into western and southern Greenland. Temperature and water-vapour anomalies intensified over the central ice sheet, while the North Atlantic storm track shifted southward.
The result may sound counterintuitive: warm advection can accompany snowfall over the high interior. Air forced upward over the ice sheet expands and cools, and the central plateau remains cold enough for ice-phase clouds and snow even while the incoming air is warmer and moister than average. The study describes this as a seasonal circulation setup for central Greenland, not a rule that every summer block produces snow everywhere.
Autumn blocking over the Nordic Seas
For September–November, the same study identified a different configuration. Central Greenland snowfall was largely associated with ice-phase clouds when blocking sat over the Nordic Seas and flow was blocked over northern Europe. The blocking anticyclone deflected the westerly storm track poleward, allowing rapid transport of warm, moist air up Greenland’s steep southeastern edge.

That route concentrates uplift on the southeast margin. Snow can accumulate on the colder, higher ice sheet even as lower coastal sectors experience rain or mixed precipitation. Treat the summer and autumn mechanisms as distinct examples of how Atlantic circulation can produce different cloud and precipitation structures in different seasons.

Atmospheric rivers: rare at Summit, important when they arrive
A 2026 Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres study analysed a 12-year Summit Station record from 2010 through 2022 and identified 41 atmospheric-river events. At that station, atmospheric rivers occurred during 0.97% of all observed times and 2.68% of snowing times, yet they supplied 5.8% of total snowfall. Snowfall rates were 80% higher during atmospheric-river conditions, and daily snowfall accumulation was about twice the amount during general snowing conditions.
The events also changed the air mass substantially. The study measured atmospheric warming of more than 7°C up to 350 hPa and a 66% increase in specific humidity. Those are Summit-specific statistics from one detection method and period; they should not be applied as Greenland-wide averages. Summit is high on the central ice sheet, where precipitation arriving during a moisture surge can still fall as snow. Near the coast or at lower elevations, the same type of moisture corridor may produce rain, freezing rain or mixed precipitation depending on the temperature profile.
NOAA’s atmospheric-river explainer notes that these corridors can produce heavy rain and can also add to snowpack. The Greenland observations show why the label atmospheric river does not itself specify rain: moisture transport and precipitation phase are separate questions.
How Greenland precipitation becomes rain, snow or a mixture
Temperature through the whole atmospheric column
Surface temperature alone is not enough. Snowflakes form in cold cloud layers, then encounter warmer or colder layers on the way down. A deep sub-freezing column allows snow to reach the surface. A warm layer can melt snowflakes into rain; if the drops then pass through a shallow sub-freezing layer, they may refreeze or become freezing rain. Near-zero profiles commonly produce sleet or wet snow, especially along coasts and during transition seasons.

Elevation and terrain
Greenland’s ice sheet rises steeply from coastal margins to a high central plateau. Air forced uphill cools, so a storm can rain at a low coastal station and snow several hundred metres higher. Conversely, downslope flow can warm and dry air on the lee side. Any statement about rain or snow should therefore specify whether it refers to a coastal station, an ice-sheet transect or the high interior.
Season and cloud phase
Summer has more opportunities for surface melt and rain at low elevations, while the high interior can remain cold enough for snow. In the autumn and winter examples above, blocking patterns were linked to ice-phase clouds and snowfall over central Greenland. Spring is a transition period in which a modest change in the vertical temperature profile can switch precipitation type.
NOAA’s 2025 assessment treats rain and snowfall together as precipitation and reports both because each affects the surface differently. A rain event can add liquid water that refreezes in the snowpack, run off immediately or accelerate melt. Snowfall adds solid mass and can cover darker, older snow or bare ice with a bright surface.

Temperature observations from 34 weather stations were generally above the 1991–2020 average during the 2025 mass-balance year, particularly in autumn, winter and spring. Summer temperatures were close to average. The report notes that summertime snow accumulation likely increased surface albedo, allowing more sunlight to be reflected and helping limit the area of surface melt. That is a surface-process effect, not proof that every snowfall event offsets all warming.

Ice-sheet mass balance is the net result of accumulation at the surface minus surface ablation, together with ice flowing through glaciers and discharging into the ocean. Snowfall is therefore one input, not the balance itself. A year with abundant snow can still lose mass if melt and glacier discharge are larger; a year with modest snowfall can lose less if melt is suppressed and discharge is lower.
For 2025, NOAA estimated Greenland’s mass balance at −129 ± 50 Gt. The report attributed the smaller-than-average loss to above-average snowfall and below-average melt, even though ice discharge was above average. The comparison value—−219 ± 16 Gt per year for 2003–2024—is an average annual loss over that period, not a target or a prediction for the next year. Both figures include the uncertainty reported by NOAA and describe total mass balance rather than precipitation alone.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFresh snow can also delay melt indirectly. Its high albedo reflects more incoming sunlight than darkened, aged snow or exposed ice. As snow grains metamorphose, wind redistributes them or rain wets and refreezes the surface, that reflectivity can change. The timing and location of snowfall therefore matter as much as the annual total.

What climate projections say about future extreme precipitation
Loeb and co-authors (2024) used variable-resolution Community Earth System Model simulations for 1980–1999 and 2080–2099 under the high-emissions SSP5-8.5 scenario. The study projects an overall increase in extreme precipitation across much of Greenland and the eastern Canadian Arctic, with the frequency of the most intense daily rates rising especially in northern areas. It projects decreases in southeastern Greenland.
The result is conditional on the scenario, model configuration and late-century period; it is not an observed trend or a forecast for a particular year. The analysis indicates that atmospheric rivers may become more important as they become more frequent in the domain, particularly in summer. Even so, most extreme-precipitation events in the study region are associated with cyclones. A future increase in extreme precipitation does not automatically mean more snow: warming can shift some events from snow to rain at lower elevations, while high terrain may continue to receive snow during the same storm.
A practical framework for interpreting an Atlantic event
- Locate the air and moisture source. Determine whether a block, cyclone or atmospheric river is directing flow toward the west, south, southeast or interior. A map of the circulation is more informative than calling a storm simply warm.
- Separate coast from ice-sheet elevation. Check the station or region. Coastal rain does not rule out snowfall on the plateau, and Summit conditions cannot represent every margin.
- Examine the vertical temperature profile. Ask whether the entire column is below freezing, contains a melting layer or has a shallow refreezing layer near the ground. This determines snow, rain or mixed precipitation.
- Track the surface response after the event. Measure new snow, melt duration, runoff and snow albedo rather than assuming that precipitation type alone determines mass gain or loss.
- Keep annual accounting separate from event description. A dramatic snowfall or rainstorm is one episode; the mass-balance estimate also includes cumulative melt and glacier discharge.
How Greenland’s changing balance is measured
NOAA’s assessment combines observations from Danish Meteorological Institute stations, Mittarfeqarfiit stations, Summit Station and PROMICE automatic-weather-station transects. Ice-discharge estimates use Sentinel-1 velocity, estimated ice thickness and density, and a plug-flow assumption. The measurement gates sit upstream of glacier termini, so the calculation omits frontal advance or retreat and melting between each gate and the terminus. That geometry is one reason an annual estimate carries uncertainty and should not be read as a direct measurement of every process at the glacier front.

The SSMIS instrument was decommissioned on 24 September 2025, ending that particular product capability. Melt monitoring did not therefore cease by every method, but continuity of a specific satellite record must be considered when comparing future results with earlier years.
Bottom line
Atlantic circulation determines where Greenland receives moisture and how air is lifted; the temperature structure and elevation determine whether that moisture falls as rain or snow. Blocking patterns documented for summer and autumn central Greenland, rare but productive atmospheric rivers at Summit, and cyclone-driven extremes each describe different pathways. Snow can brighten the surface and add accumulation, yet Greenland’s total balance also depends on melt and ice discharge. Observations show continued net loss in 2025, while projections indicate that future extreme precipitation will vary by region and scenario rather than follow one Greenland-wide rule.
