During a spacewalk, an astronaut usually wears a liquid-cooling and ventilation garment (LCVG) directly against the body, beneath the suit’s pressure layers. Water flowing through small tubes carries heat away, while ventilation helps move air and sweat. The pressure garment then holds the breathing atmosphere and provides the suit’s structural protection. Communications may come from a separate cap under the helmet or from audio hardware built into the helmet, depending on the suit.

There is no single universal “undersuit.” The layers change with the suit and mission: an extravehicular mobility unit (EMU) for a spacewalk, a launch-and-landing suit, and an Orion exploration suit use different arrangements and different sources of cooling water.

The cooling garment astronauts wear closest to the body

The best-known layer under an EVA spacesuit is the liquid-cooling and ventilation garment, usually abbreviated LCVG. NASA describes it as stretchy, close-fitting clothing threaded with water tubes. The garment is clothing, but it works only as part of a larger life-support system.

How water cooling works

In an EMU, chilled water flows through tubes positioned close to the astronaut’s skin. That water absorbs body heat and carries it away from the suit. A pump and chiller in the backpack keep the water moving and cool it before it circulates again.

NASA spacesuit engineer Amy Ross summarizes the principle in NASA’s Suiting up for Space podcast: “We don’t have air conditioning in the suit, we use cool water flowing through tubes to help cool you down.” The statement describes the water-based method used in the cited suit context; it should not be read as proof that every crewed suit uses an identical cooling loop. NASA’s podcast transcript explains the system.

Why ventilation is part of the garment

The LCVG also includes ventilation features. Air movement helps draw sweat away from the astronaut and circulates air inside the clothing layer. Cooling is therefore not just a matter of putting cold material against the skin. The garment has to manage heat, moisture and airflow while the astronaut works inside a sealed suit.

Because the tubes connect to suit hardware, an LCVG is not a standalone consumer cooling shirt. Its performance depends on the suit’s water supply, pump, chiller, ventilation path and backpack controls. A generic cooling garment or headset cannot substitute for those connected systems.

What the pressure garment does

The cooling garment removes heat; the pressure garment performs a different safety-critical job. It encloses the astronaut and retains the pressurized breathing environment needed outside the spacecraft. The layers must preserve the suit’s shape and keep the pressure envelope from ballooning uncontrollably when inflated.

Pressure retention and restraint

NASA’s Apollo-era technical description identifies three useful layers in the torso-and-limb pressure suit: an inner comfort lining, a gas-retention bladder and a restraint layer. The comfort lining separates the working pressure components from the body. The bladder holds the gas. The restraint layer limits expansion and helps the suit remain usable when pressurized.

That Apollo description is a historical construction example, not a universal diagram for every current suit. Modern suits can use different materials, patterns and component arrangements. The general division of labor remains important: the close-fitting cooling layer handles heat and moisture, while the pressure assembly retains the atmosphere and gives the suit mechanical structure.

Why the layers must fit together

A pressure suit cannot be designed as an ordinary jacket worn over a separate athletic base layer. The astronaut must be able to bend, reach, see instruments and operate tools while the suit is pressurized. The cooling tubes, ventilation paths, pressure envelope and restraint components therefore have to be engineered as a coordinated system. Small changes in one layer can affect mobility, thermal control or the way the suit holds pressure.

How astronauts communicate under the helmet

Communications equipment is another reason the clothing under a spacesuit is suit-specific. Some suits use a separate communications carrier, while newer exploration-suit concepts place the audio equipment in the helmet itself.

The communications carrier cap

In the historical configuration NASA describes, astronauts wore a fabric communications cap under the helmet. It is often nicknamed the “Snoopy cap.” Earphones and microphones in the cap connect to the suit radio, allowing the astronaut to hear mission control and speak while the helmet remains sealed.

The cap is not a casual headset. Its microphones, wiring and fit are designed to work with the suit radio and the helmet’s restricted space. That is why an ordinary consumer headset is not an interchangeable accessory.

Integrated helmet audio

NASA also describes an exploration-suit audio system with speakers and embedded voice-activated microphones. In that design, the audio components are integrated into the helmet, eliminating the need for a separate cap. This is a design choice, not a universal replacement for every communications carrier currently used in spaceflight.

Whether the astronaut wears a cap depends on the named suit and mission. A story that says every astronaut always wears a Snoopy cap, or that no astronaut does, is too broad.

Different missions use different under-suit arrangements

“Spacesuit” can mean several kinds of vehicle and EVA equipment. The operating environment determines where cooling water comes from, how much of the body the cooling garment covers and how communications are arranged.

EMU for an EVA spacewalk

The EMU is the reference case for a spacewalk outside a spacecraft. Its LCVG fits close to the body and uses water tubes near the skin. The backpack contains the water, chiller and pump, along with other life-support hardware. The complete suit system supports oxygen supply and circulation, carbon-dioxide removal, power, radio communications and cooling-water circulation.

The LCVG sits beneath the EMU’s pressure garment. The pressure assembly retains the suit atmosphere, while the backpack and connected systems keep the astronaut supplied and thermally controlled. Thinking of the astronaut as wearing “a cold shirt under a spacesuit” misses the fact that the shirt is one component in a portable spacecraft.

Shuttle launch-and-landing suit

A Shuttle launch-and-landing suit was used inside the vehicle for launch and return, not for an untethered spacewalk. NASA describes lightweight clothing beneath a thermal-underwear-like cooling layer and an orange outer suit. This arrangement addressed the launch-and-landing environment and should not be presented as interchangeable with the EMU’s EVA configuration.

The orange outer suit is the visible part most people remember, but the underlayers matter for thermal management and crew protection. Its purpose and connected systems differ from those of a backpack-supported spacewalk suit.

Orion exploration suit

NASA describes the Orion suit’s cooling garment as covering the chest and receiving water from the spacecraft. That is a different arrangement from an EMU in which the backpack carries the water, chiller and pump. NASA’s Orion and lunar-exploration material also describes tubing in the garment as part of the suit’s thermal-control approach.

Because Orion’s garment is supplied by the vehicle, it should not be described as proof that all spacesuits carry the same backpack cooling hardware. The suit’s mission, vehicle interface and intended activity determine the arrangement.

The underlayers are part of a portable life-support system

The LCVG is easiest to understand when viewed alongside the equipment it serves. In an EMU, the backpack and suit systems provide oxygen, circulate air, remove carbon dioxide, supply electrical power, carry radio communications and move cooling water. The garment is the body-facing part of that network.

Cooling and breathing are separate functions

Cooling water does not replace the breathing system. The water loop carries heat away from the body, while the suit’s atmosphere and ventilation system provide breathable gas and move air. Keeping those functions distinct helps explain why the LCVG can be wet internally without being the source of the astronaut’s oxygen.

The backpack is not merely a tank

For an EMU, the backpack houses the water, chiller and pump as well as other life-support equipment. It is the machinery that lets the body-worn garment operate for a spacewalk. Without the connected pump and thermal-control hardware, the tubes in the garment would not provide the intended cooling cycle.

Vehicle-supplied systems change the design

Orion’s chest-covering cooling garment receives water from the spacecraft instead of relying on the same backpack arrangement described for the EMU. This illustrates a broader rule: suit layers are interfaces to a vehicle or portable life-support unit, not a fixed stack of clothing that every astronaut wears.

Common misconceptions about what is worn under a spacesuit

“Astronauts wear air conditioning under the suit”

There is no conventional air conditioner blowing cold air around the body in the cited EMU explanation. Cooling comes primarily from chilled water flowing through tubes near the skin, supported by ventilation that manages air and sweat.

“The cooling garment works by itself”

The LCVG is connected equipment. Its water tubes rely on a supply, pump and chiller, and its ventilation features operate within the suit’s airflow system. Treating it as a standalone shirt gives the wrong impression of how the suit keeps an astronaut alive and comfortable.

“Every spacesuit has the same pressure layers”

The Apollo-era comfort lining, gas-retention bladder and restraint layer are a useful historical example. They should not be copied into a claim about every modern suit without documentation for that suit.

“Every astronaut wears a Snoopy cap”

Some configurations use a communications carrier with earphones and microphones. Other exploration-suit designs integrate speakers and voice-activated microphones into the helmet. The correct answer depends on the suit.

How to identify the right answer for a named mission

When a question refers to a particular astronaut, vehicle or mission, identify the suit before describing the clothing beneath it. Use this checklist:

  1. Identify the activity. Decide whether the suit is for an EVA, launch and landing, or vehicle-based exploration. EVA and vehicle suits are not interchangeable categories.
  2. Locate the cooling source. Check whether water comes from an EMU backpack or from the spacecraft, as described for Orion.
  3. Check body coverage. The EMU LCVG is described as close-fitting with tubing near the skin; the Orion description specifically identifies a chest-covering garment.
  4. Verify the pressure construction. Use the named suit’s official documentation rather than assuming the Apollo-era bladder-and-restraint description applies unchanged.
  5. Verify communications hardware. Determine whether the design uses a separate carrier cap or helmet-integrated audio.

This method avoids turning one documented configuration into a claim about all crewed spacecraft. NASA’s source material itself cautions, by example, that cooling garments, pressure layers and communications hardware vary with the suit and mission.

Why the answer matters

The question “What do astronauts wear under a spacesuit?” sounds like a clothing question, but the answer is really about systems engineering. The body-facing LCVG manages heat and moisture. The pressure garment retains the atmosphere and supports the suit’s form. The communications hardware connects the astronaut to the radio network. The backpack or spacecraft supplies the pumps, cooling equipment, air handling and power that make those layers useful.

For an EMU spacewalk, the concise answer is: a close-fitting, water-cooled and ventilated garment beneath the pressure suit, with communications provided either by a carrier cap or by integrated helmet audio depending on the design. For launch, landing or Orion operations, the layers and water source change, so the mission’s specific suit documentation is the authoritative guide.
