Astronauts on a typical six-month International Space Station (ISS) mission divide their time among scientific research, station operations, exercise, health monitoring, training, logistics, communications and, when scheduled, spacewalks. They are simultaneously laboratory researchers and operators responsible for keeping a complex spacecraft functioning safely.

“Six months” is a planning norm, not a guarantee. NASA says mission length can change with visiting spacecraft schedules, mission priorities and other operational factors. The daily workload changes for the same reasons, so there is no single timetable that every ISS crew follows.

What the mission is really for

The ISS is an orbital laboratory, a spacecraft and a permanently occupied worksite. Crew members must produce research results while maintaining the systems that keep people alive in orbit. Their duties are coordinated with Mission Control and with teams on Earth that plan experiments, maintenance, cargo movements and vehicle operations.

Microgravity makes ordinary tasks different. Loose objects float, liquids form drifting globules, and hardware must be restrained or attached to prevent it from becoming a hazard. Astronauts therefore spend substantial time configuring equipment, checking procedures, documenting results and stowing items correctly, not just performing headline-grabbing experiments.

How an ISS day is planned

NASA’s operations guidance describes twice-daily planning conferences in which the crew and ground teams review progress, upcoming activities, constraints and changes. The plan is detailed, but it is not immutable. A delayed cargo vehicle, an urgent equipment fault, an experiment that needs attention or a change in a spacewalk plan can reorder the day.

Why no universal timetable exists

  • Research assignments: Different crews receive different investigations and hardware configurations.
  • Vehicle traffic: Arrivals and departures create periods of intensive preparation, monitoring, docking support and cargo transfer.
  • Maintenance demand: A component that needs inspection or replacement can displace routine work.
  • Mission priorities: Spacewalks, technology demonstrations and station upgrades receive time when their operational windows open.

This means an astronaut may spend one day on laboratory operations and another handling cargo, troubleshooting a system or preparing for an external task. The recurring categories remain stable even when the sequence changes.

Science and laboratory work

Research is a central part of the job. Astronauts install samples, operate instruments, collect measurements, change fluid or temperature conditions, photograph results and transfer data to investigators on Earth. Some experiments are largely automated; others require frequent crew intervention.

Configuring experiments

Before an investigation can run, crew members locate the correct hardware, connect power or data lines, install samples and verify that restraints and ventilation are correct. They follow procedures step by step because a small mistake can compromise a sample or create a safety problem in a confined spacecraft.

Examples of current investigations

Recent NASA expedition reports illustrate the range of work without defining a fixed checklist. A 2026 report mentions eye examinations, virtual-reality research, laboratory maintenance and bioprinting. These activities show that “science” can include human-health measurements, software-mediated experiments and manufacturing tests as well as traditional sample handling.

Health studies may require repeated measurements over time. Materials or biological experiments can involve scheduled observations and careful storage. Bioprinting tests examine whether tissue-like structures can be produced under microgravity conditions. The crew’s role is to execute the procedure reliably and preserve the chain of information needed by researchers.

Keeping the station operating

Every crew member contributes to routine spacecraft operations. Tasks include inspecting equipment, replacing filters or components, checking environmental systems, organizing work areas, cleaning surfaces and recording condition reports. The station is a large, heavily used vehicle; housekeeping is part of safety, not cosmetic work.

Maintenance and troubleshooting

Astronauts use procedures, tools and spare parts to keep laboratory racks, computers, ventilation, power distribution and life-support hardware working. They may photograph a suspected problem, take measurements, isolate a failed component or conduct a repair under ground-team guidance. If a task cannot be completed immediately, the crew secures the area and schedules follow-up work.

Cargo and inventory

Resupply vehicles bring food, clothing, experiment hardware, replacement parts and personal items. Unloading is only the first step. Crew members identify each package, move it through station modules, install equipment where needed and update inventory records. Empty containers and used hardware must be packed for return or disposal. A crowded station makes careful stowage essential: an item that is misplaced can consume valuable search time during an emergency.

Water and other consumables

NASA says the station’s Water Recovery System cuts crew dependence on water delivered by cargo spacecraft by 65 percent. Recycling reduces the mass that must be launched, but it does not eliminate logistics. Crew members still monitor systems, replace consumables and manage supplies brought by visiting vehicles.

Life in constant motion

The ISS circles Earth about 16 times in 24 hours, according to NASA. Sunrise and sunset therefore occur repeatedly, but the crew does not treat every orbit as a separate workday. Their schedule follows an agreed work-and-sleep cycle, with Mission Control coordinating activities across time zones and orbital passes.

Exercise is a medical requirement

Long-duration microgravity causes muscles to weaken and bones to lose mineral density. Astronauts therefore exercise approximately two hours each day on long missions, a figure NASA reported in 2024. Exercise plans are adjusted with physicians and other specialists who monitor physical and behavioral health.

Station exercise equipment

  • Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED): Provides adjustable resistance for movements that load major muscle groups.
  • T2 treadmill: Lets astronauts run or walk while harnesses and restraints provide the loading that body weight normally supplies.
  • Cycle Ergometer with Vibration Isolation and Stabilization (CEVIS): Provides cycling exercise while limiting vibrations transmitted to the station.

These are specialized orbital systems integrated into the station. They are not ordinary consumer fitness products, and their use is programmed around the crew’s workload, medical data and equipment availability.

Health monitoring beyond workouts

Crews collect health-related data such as eye or vision measurements, physical performance indicators and behavioral observations. Medical teams on Earth review the information and can modify exercise or other countermeasures. The goal is to protect the crew during the mission and to understand how the body responds to extended spaceflight.

Training, procedures and readiness

Training continues after launch. Astronauts rehearse emergency responses, review procedures for unfamiliar hardware, practice robotics or vehicle operations and prepare for tasks that may occur weeks later. Refresher work is especially important when a procedure involves several crew members or must be performed while wearing a spacesuit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Training also covers contingencies. The crew must know how to respond to fire, smoke, pressure loss, toxic contamination or a medical problem while coordinating with Mission Control. Drills consume scheduled time, but they reduce the chance that an unusual event will become a crisis.

Spacewalks: specialized work outside the station

A spacewalk, formally an extravehicular activity (EVA), is scheduled when work outside the pressurized modules is required. EVAs support station construction, maintenance and upgrades. They are not routine daily outings.

What happens before an EVA

  1. Define the external task: Teams identify the equipment, tools, restraints and sequence needed for the job.
  2. Train the crew: Astronauts rehearse movements and tool use, often in spacesuit simulators or underwater facilities on Earth before launch, then review procedures in orbit.
  3. Configure the station: Airlock hardware, communications, cameras, power connections and safety equipment are checked.
  4. Prepare the suits: Each suit is inspected and configured for life support, cooling, communications and mobility.
  5. Execute and monitor: Spacewalkers follow a detailed timeline while the partner crew and Mission Control track safety and progress.

NASA’s 2026 expedition reporting places spacewalk preparation alongside research and laboratory upkeep. That combination is typical of ISS life: preparation for an EVA becomes one workstream among many, rather than replacing every other duty.

Communications and education

Astronauts communicate regularly with Mission Control, specialists and investigators. They report equipment status, clarify procedures, discuss research results and receive schedule updates. Some crew members also participate in amateur-radio contacts or educational events. A 2025 expedition report, for example, described a radio contact with students.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These contacts serve more than public relations. Explaining an experiment or answering student questions can support education while also requiring the crew to understand and communicate the purpose of their work clearly.

What a representative workday can contain

The following sequence is illustrative, not a universal timetable. Actual start times, task lengths and order vary by expedition.

  1. Planning review: The crew checks the day’s timeline and any overnight messages from Mission Control.
  2. Research operations: An astronaut installs samples, runs an instrument, collects images or checks an automated investigation.
  3. Exercise: A scheduled session on ARED, T2 or CEVIS provides the day’s countermeasure against muscle and bone loss.
  4. Station upkeep: The crew cleans a work area, inspects a system, replaces a component or updates inventory.
  5. Health or training activity: The astronaut completes a medical measurement, reviews an emergency procedure or rehearses an upcoming operation.
  6. Cargo or vehicle support: If a spacecraft is arriving or departing, the crew may transfer supplies, configure equipment or monitor the operation.
  7. Documentation and handover: Results, equipment status and unresolved issues are recorded for the ground team and the next work period.

On a high-demand day, several of these blocks may be shortened or moved. During a quiet period, an astronaut may have more time for personal activities or extended research work.

How mission phases change the workload

Mission phase or trigger Typical emphasis Why the schedule changes
Early stay Orientation, equipment familiarization, baseline health measurements and handover from the previous crew New arrivals must learn the station’s current configuration and assume responsibilities.
Routine operations Research, exercise, maintenance, cleaning, health monitoring and training The crew follows the planned cycle while responding to normal operational needs.
Visiting spacecraft Cargo transfer, vehicle monitoring, communications and stowage Docking windows and vehicle procedures create time-critical work.
Spacewalk campaign Suit preparation, procedure reviews, tool configuration and airlock operations External work requires extensive coordination and safety checks.
End of stay Handover, packing, equipment return and final data collection Responsibilities and supplies must be transferred to the next crew or returned to Earth.

Weekends, personal time and the limits of the “typical day” idea

A historical NASA guide described half-day Saturday housecleaning and Sunday personal time. That is useful context for how earlier schedules were organized, but it should not be treated as a universal current rule. Modern plans can assign work on any day when an experiment, vehicle operation or maintenance need requires it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Personal time remains important. Astronauts may read, watch media, photograph Earth, contact family or simply rest. Sleep and recovery are protected because fatigue can affect judgment, coordination and health. The exact amount of free time depends on the expedition’s workload and the day’s operational demands.

Common misconceptions about ISS work

“Astronauts mostly float around and do experiments.”

Research is important, but station operations occupy a large share of the job. Cleaning, inventory, repairs, exercise, health checks, training and communications are necessary to make the laboratory usable and safe.

“Every day follows the same schedule.”

Mission Control plans the day in detail, yet vehicle traffic, maintenance discoveries and changing priorities regularly alter the plan. A recurring work pattern is more accurate than a fixed timetable.

“Spacewalks are routine.”

EVAs occur for specific construction, maintenance or upgrade tasks. They involve extensive preparation and are scheduled when the external work is needed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Exercise is optional free time.”

The daily exercise period is a countermeasure to predictable effects of microgravity. It is integrated into the operational schedule and guided by medical monitoring.

The practical answer

During a six-month-class ISS mission, astronauts repeatedly switch between scientist, engineer, caretaker, trainee, communicator and crew member. They run investigations, maintain the station, recycle and manage supplies, exercise for about two hours, collect health data, practice contingencies and prepare for special operations. The balance changes from day to day, but the purpose is constant: keep the crew healthy, keep the station functioning and return useful science and technology results to Earth.
