Arena rankings measure how often people prefer one anonymous model response over another in Arena’s pairwise comparisons. They are evidence of relative, perceived response quality in that setting—not a universal measure of intelligence, factual accuracy, or suitability for your work.
How the standard Arena ranking is made
In Battle mode, Arena presents a prompt and two responses without identifying the models. A participant picks the response they prefer; the model identities are revealed after the vote. Arena says anonymous Battle votes contribute to official rankings, while votes in its named Side by Side mode do not. The platform aggregates pairwise results using a Bradley–Terry statistical model. So a model’s position reflects how it fares against the models it is compared with, under the prompts and participation represented in the data. It is a community-preference signal, not a fixed unit of capability. Arena itself says its leaderboards are grounded in community judgment rather than static benchmarks.
What a higher position does—and does not—tell you
It indicates relative preference in Arena comparisons
A higher-ranked model has won more of the relevant preference comparisons, as estimated from the collected votes. That can help identify models whose responses people tend to like in this evaluation setting.

It does not establish correctness or task performance
A preference vote does not independently verify claims in a response. A fluent or persuasive answer may be preferred without being true; a careful answer may be accurate but less preferred. Arena notes that factuality can be difficult for people to judge and may not be captured by preference votes. The standard score also does not, by itself, establish performance on your specific professional task, cost, latency, privacy practices, or whether a model has the tools you need. Those require separate, current evidence.
For a decision, treat preference as one dimension. Check factual accuracy and test the model on representative examples from your own task; verify provider information for availability, version, speed, cost, data handling, and required tools.

How to interpret votes, status, and model versions
A leaderboard rank is a snapshot: it can change as new votes, models, or versions enter. Arena’s Leaderboard Policy, updated 1 September 2026, says public models are tested until ratings stabilize, with at least 1,000 votes and typically more. Pre-release scores may be marked preliminary until enough fresh votes arrive after public release. The threshold is a policy description, not a guarantee that a result is precise or representative for every use.

The same policy sets eligibility and sampling rules. It limits the public leaderboard to first-party foundation models meeting its public-availability criteria, with a defined route for some public early releases. Arena says sampling probabilities are typically uniform with adjustments and that regression reweighting is used to account for those probabilities. When comparing entries, read the score alongside its uncertainty or preliminary label, model version, and date rather than treating rank as permanent.

Arena’s optional factuality ranking is a separate signal
Arena describes a non-default factuality option initially applying to its Text and Search Arenas. Its stated method samples battles for auditing, extracts claims considered reasonably checkable on the web, assigns calibrated probabilities of truth, and compares average claim correctness between responses. The unified factuality ranking combines these results with preference through a composite Bradley–Terry model. Arena announced a default factuality weight of 25% for that composite; this is a setting of the announced ranking method, not a claim that factuality constitutes 25% of every model response or that the resulting score is a universal accuracy rate. In its 2026 report, Arena said it labeled more than 2 million claims: over 1.3 million from Text Arena and 700,000 from Search Arena, drawn from roughly 130,000 Text battles and 40,000 Search battles. It reported marginal true-claim rates of 87% for Text Arena and 89% for Search Arena. These are Arena’s reported results for that analysis, not independent estimates of how accurate all model answers are in general use.

What an independent study found—and its limits
The NeurIPS 2025 paper The Leaderboard Illusion analyzed about 2 million battles and 243 models from 42 providers over January 2024 through April 2025. It raised concerns about private testing and variant selection, uneven distribution of evaluation data, exposure to Arena data, and silent model deprecations.

In a controlled experiment, increasing exposure to Arena data from 0% to 70% raised ArenaHard win rate from 23.5% to 49.9%. They also tracked 243 public models and reported 205 silent removals, compared with 47 officially deprecated models.
Those measurements describe the study’s specified sample and time window; they should not be projected automatically onto today’s live leaderboard or treated as proof that every current rank is invalid. Arena’s later policy, updated 1 September 2026, describes eligibility rules, a public record of retired models, vote thresholds, and sampling reweighting. The existence of a policy does not, by itself, settle every empirical concern raised by the paper.

- Use the ordinary ranking as evidence about community preference in anonymous pairwise comparisons, not as an absolute capability score.
- Check whether the entry is preliminary, how many votes it has, which model version is listed, and when the result was recorded.
- Use the factuality view as an additional signal where available; it measures a different dimension and remains limited to Arena’s described method.
- For high-stakes or specialized work, test candidate models on your own representative prompts and independently verify important outputs.
- Evaluate operational requirements—such as speed, price, privacy, availability, and tools—using current provider-specific information, not leaderboard position.
