What Zygarde Cells are
Pokémon GO describes Zygarde Cells as components that make up Zygarde. They are not separate Pokémon, evolution items sold in a shop, or physical objects that you need to buy. They are an in-game resource tied specifically to Zygarde’s form-changing mechanic.

The practical loop is simple: obtain Zygarde, follow Routes to look for cells, keep the cells in your Zygarde Cube, and spend the accumulated cells to change Zygarde’s form. What the Zygarde Cube does
The Zygarde Cube is an in-game storage item that gathers the cells you encounter while following Routes. Pokémon GO’s Help Center lists the Cube among the game’s items and explains its role in collecting Zygarde Cells. It appears in your Item Bag; it is not a retail device, accessory, or separate app.
The Cube also provides your running total. From the Routes interface, you can open the Cube’s details to see how many cells you have collected. That count is the useful figure to check before attempting a form change.
Because the Cube is storage rather than a second collection method, you do not need to transfer cells manually from a Route. Once a discovered cell is awarded, it is added to the Cube automatically under the current system.
How to get Zygarde Cells
Routes are the game’s collection path. A Route is a player-created or otherwise available path shown in Pokémon GO that you follow from a starting point to an endpoint. Cells can be discovered during this activity, but the game does not promise one for every Route.
1. Obtain Zygarde first
Zygarde is encountered through the Special Research story From A to Zygarde. If you have not completed the relevant research step, you can still explore Routes, but you will not yet have Zygarde available to use the cells on. 2. Find a Route in Nearby
Open the Nearby menu and select the Routes tab. The page lists Routes available around your location. Choose one whose distance, direction, and endpoint are practical for your walk.
3. Start and follow the Route
Begin the Route in the app and follow its mapped path toward the endpoint. A cell may be discovered while you are progressing along it. You do not need to search for a physical object outside the game; the cell is a digital encounter associated with Route activity.
4. Complete the Route
The current collection interaction is different from the original map-based behavior. If Pokémon GO discovers a cell on your Route, the game awards it when you complete the Route. You no longer need to tap the cell on the map to pick it up.
5. Check the Cube total
After completion, open the Zygarde Cube details to verify that the collected-cell count has increased. Checking the total is the clearest way to distinguish a successful award from a Route that simply produced no cell.

Are Zygarde Cells guaranteed on every Route?
No. Pokémon GO’s October 2026 gameplay and quality-of-life update says the probability of finding Zygarde Cells remains the same, so you may still complete a Route without finding one. The official update does not publish a numeric drop rate. That means there is no official percentage you can use to predict how many Routes will produce a cell. Player reports and community estimates may describe personal results, but they should not be treated as an official rate.

It may simply be a Route on which no cell was discovered. The correct response is to check the Cube count, then try another eligible Route rather than expecting a guaranteed reward.
What changed in October 2026
Before the current update, a discovered cell could appear on the Route map and require an interaction to collect it. The October 2026 change moves that reward to the end of the Route: when a cell is discovered, it is delivered as part of Route completion.
- Old interaction: locate the discovered cell on the map and tap it.
- Current interaction: complete the Route; any discovered cell is awarded at completion.
- Unchanged point: the chance of discovering a cell has not been increased or guaranteed by this update.
This is a version-sensitive mechanic. Pokémon GO can alter Route behavior in later updates, so use the in-game instructions and the latest official announcement if the buttons or reward timing differ from the descriptions above.
What Zygarde Cells are used for
The main use is changing Zygarde’s form. Cells are the resource consumed by that form-changing system, so collecting them gives you progress toward a different Zygarde form rather than a conventional level increase.

Form changes are separate from ordinary Pokémon actions such as powering up, evolving, teaching a charged attack, or purifying a Shadow Pokémon. A cell does not substitute for Zygarde Candy, Stardust, or any other cost shown elsewhere on the Pokémon screen.
How to use your stored cells
- Open your Pokémon storage and select Zygarde.
- Look for the form-change control on Zygarde’s details screen.
- Review the in-game requirement displayed for the form you want.
- Confirm the change only when you are ready to spend the required cells.
The official pages cited for this explainer establish that cells change Zygarde’s form, but they do not state the exact number required for each individual form transition. Pokémon GO may also present requirements differently as the interface changes. For that reason, rely on the current requirement shown on your own Zygarde screen rather than an uncited number from an old guide.

Use the Nearby Routes list before setting out
The Routes page in Nearby is the starting point for choosing a path. Select a Route that you can safely finish, because the current reward timing is tied to completion. A very long or inconvenient Route is not automatically better than a short one: no Route guarantees a cell, and the official sources do not publish a higher probability for a particular distance or location.
Finish the path instead of stopping after a discovery
Under the current mechanic, seeing that a cell has been discovered does not mean you need to interact with it immediately. Continue to the Route endpoint so the game can issue the reward. If you stop early, you may not receive the completion reward.

Verify the number in the Cube
Keep the Cube details page as your progress checkpoint. The count is more reliable than trying to remember which Route produced a cell, especially when you complete several Routes in one outing.
Separate collection goals from form goals
There are two distinct steps: finding cells by following Routes and using cells to change Zygarde’s form. A Route session can succeed as exploration even when it produces no cell, while a form change can happen only after enough cells have accumulated for the requirement displayed in the game.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“The Zygarde Cube is a physical accessory.”
It is not. The Cube is an in-game item listed in Pokémon GO’s item system. You do not need to purchase hardware, connect a peripheral, or visit a shop to store cells.
“Every Route should give me one cell.”
That expectation conflicts with the official update. Cell discovery is not guaranteed on each Route. Complete the path, check the Cube, and try another Route if the total is unchanged.

“I have to tap a cell on the map.”
Not under the October 2026 behavior described by Pokémon GO. A discovered cell is awarded when the Route is completed, so looking for a tappable object after reaching the endpoint is unnecessary.
“A cell is another kind of Zygarde Candy.”
Cells and Candy serve different purposes. Cells are tied to form changes; the game’s normal Pokémon resources remain separate. Read the cost shown for the action you are taking instead of assuming one resource can replace another.
“A community drop-rate estimate is official.”
The official announcement gives a qualitative statement—cells may not appear on every Route—but no numeric probability. Treat any percentage not published by Pokémon GO as an estimate, not a guaranteed game rule.
Safety and practical play
Routes are designed to be followed while exploring, but the collection mechanic is never a reason to take risks. Do not interact with Pokémon GO while driving, cycling in traffic, crossing roads, trespassing, or entering unsafe areas. Stop in a safe place before checking the Nearby menu, starting a Route, or reviewing the Cube.
