White noise is approximately flat per unit frequency, pink noise decreases about 3 decibels (dB) with each octave, and brown noise decreases about 6 dB per octave. As a result, white noise usually sounds bright and hissy, pink noise fuller and softer, and brown noise deeper and more rumbling.
Those are engineering distinctions, not a ranking of which sound is best for sleep, concentration, or relaxation. A steady sound can mask intermittent background noise for some listeners, but studies do not establish a universal winner. The most useful choice is the profile you can tolerate at the lowest level that masks the particular disturbance you are trying to cover.

The three noise colors at a glance
| Noise color | Conventional spectrum | Typical listening impression | What the definition does—and does not—tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| White | Approximately flat power spectral density across frequency | Bright, steady hiss; often compared with static or a waterfall | It has equal power per unit frequency in the idealized model, but a listener does not perceive every pitch as equally loud. |
| Pink | Power falls about 3 dB per octave (approximately 1/f) |
Fuller or softer; often compared with rainfall or rustling leaves | Relative power shifts toward lower frequencies while the usual idealized signal still spans the full range. |
| Brown | Power falls about 6 dB per octave (approximately 1/f²) |
Deep, low rumble; sometimes compared with distant thunder or heavy rain | It is more strongly weighted toward low frequencies than pink. “Brown” refers to Brownian motion, not simply the color brown. |
An octave is a doubling of frequency: for example, 100 to 200 hertz or 1,000 to 2,000 hertz. A negative slope means that higher octaves receive less sound power than lower ones. The slope is a mathematical description; the audible result also depends on bandwidth, playback equipment, room acoustics, and listening level.
What “color” means in acoustics
In acoustics, color is shorthand for a signal’s power spectral density—how much power is present at different frequencies. The terms borrow the idea of a visible-light spectrum, but they do not describe a tint or a specific recording. A file labeled “pink noise” may be an approximation, and a consumer device may use the label for a sound profile without publishing a calibrated measurement.

White noise: flat per unit frequency
Ideal white noise has roughly the same power in each equal-width frequency interval. That flat spectrum places substantial energy in the upper frequencies, so it commonly comes across as a bright hiss. The “white” label does not mean that every pitch sounds equally loud to human ears: hearing sensitivity varies by frequency, and speakers, headphones, and room reflections alter the result.
Pink noise: a 3 dB-per-octave tilt
Pink noise reduces power by about 3 dB whenever frequency doubles. In power terms, each higher octave carries about half as much power as the octave below it. Because octave bands get wider as frequency rises, this slope produces approximately equal power in equal-width logarithmic bands. Listeners often describe the result as less sharp than white noise, with a character reminiscent of rainfall or leaves moving in wind.
Brown noise: a stronger low-frequency tilt
Brown noise, also called red or Brownian noise, falls about 6 dB per octave. Each doubling of frequency therefore has roughly one-quarter the power of the preceding octave, making the low-frequency emphasis stronger than in pink noise. The usual impression is a low rumble or distant thunder. Very low frequencies can be affected strongly by a room and by the bass response of a particular speaker, so two brown-noise recordings can sound noticeably different.

Why the same label can sound different
The conventional slopes are useful reference points, but real products and recordings are not automatically identical. A device may limit the frequency range to protect its speaker, apply equalization for a small enclosure, or blend a noise signal with sounds such as rainfall. Headphones and phone speakers reproduce bass differently, and a room can reinforce or cancel particular low frequencies. Volume changes can also alter perceived brightness and harshness.
The Australian Acoustical Society’s 2024 review notes that colored-noise definitions were not consistent across all studies it examined. For that reason, treat “white,” “pink,” and “brown” as conventional categories unless a recording or device supplies a measured spectrum and the conditions under which it was measured.
What each color may be useful for
Masking a disruptive sound
A steady background signal can make an intermittent sound less noticeable by reducing the contrast between the disturbance and the room’s baseline. This is masking, not active noise cancellation: the unwanted sound still reaches your ears, and the masking signal does not remove it. Whether masking helps depends on the timing, frequency, and level of the disturbance. A low rumble may be covered more comfortably by a low-tilted signal, while a hissier profile may cover higher-pitched sounds without requiring as much bass.

Sleep
Northwestern Medicine describes white noise as a consistent backdrop that may reduce the salience of abrupt sounds. It notes that some listeners find pink noise less harsh and that some prefer brown noise’s lower register. These are preference-based observations, not proof that one color improves sleep for everyone.

Sleep physician Jean Tsai also emphasized that data are limited and that people’s preferences differ. The same interview says brown-noise research is very sparse, while findings on pink noise are promising but preliminary. Do not treat any color as a cure for insomnia or as a substitute for evaluation of persistent sleep problems.
Focus and work
Some people use a steady signal to reduce awareness of conversations, traffic, or other variable sounds. The practical test is whether the sound fades into the background without becoming a new distraction. Evidence does not support a blanket claim that one color improves attention for all people or tasks.

How to choose a color for your situation
- Identify the disturbance. Note whether the problem is intermittent speech, sharp household sounds, traffic, or a low mechanical hum. The closer the masking sound’s character is to the disturbance, the more likely it is to cover it without excessive volume.
- Try white, pink, and brown separately. Use the same speaker position and listening duration so that you are comparing profiles rather than different equipment.
- Adjust for comfort, not maximum loudness. Choose the quietest setting that makes the unwanted sound less attention-grabbing. If the profile feels piercing, pressurized, or irritating, switch colors or stop playback.
- Check the result in the real environment. A profile that works during a quiet afternoon may be ineffective when neighbors, traffic, or heating systems change at night.
- Keep the option that remains unobtrusive. The best practical choice is the one you can tolerate consistently while still hearing important alarms and environmental cues.
There is no requirement to choose only one profile. You might prefer pink noise for a bedroom, white noise for covering higher-pitched interruptions, and brown noise when a lower, less hissy character is more comfortable.

The American Academy of Audiology warns that excessive sound exposure can damage hearing. Northwestern Medicine sleep physician Roneil G. Malkani advises keeping continuous background noise just loud enough to be audible, but not so loud that it arouses the sleeper. Because safe exposure depends on the device, distance, room, duration, and listener, the available sources do not establish one universal decibel setting for every sound machine or phone.

Jean Tsai of the University of Colorado School of Medicine has cautioned that continuous overnight noise may have downsides, while describing possible hearing effects as theoretical and noting that data are limited. That statement is a reason to use conservative levels and pay attention to symptoms, not evidence that ordinary sound-machine use is proven to cause hearing loss.
Devices, apps, and recordings
Apps and dedicated sound machines commonly provide samples of all three profiles. A sound machine is optional: the distinction is about the signal’s frequency distribution, not the hardware. When comparing products, look for independent information about frequency range, volume controls, timer behavior, and whether “color” settings are measured profiles or marketing names.
Phone and laptop speakers often reproduce low frequencies weakly, so brown noise may lose much of its intended character on a small speaker. Headphones can deliver more bass but place the source close to the ear; conservative levels remain important. If a recording includes nature sounds or music, it is no longer a pure example of a single noise color, even if the app places it in that category.
What the evidence can and cannot establish
The engineering definitions are well established: IEEE Technology Navigator describes white noise as flat power spectral density, pink noise as a roughly 3 dB-per-octave decrease, and brown noise as a roughly 6 dB-per-octave decrease. Those figures explain the spectral relationship; they are not health-outcome statistics.
The Acoustics 2024 review identified three systematic reviews covering noise and sleep, cognition, or both, while also noting that study definitions differed. That makes direct comparisons difficult. Northwestern Medicine and the American Academy of Audiology both present personal preference and context as important. The University of Colorado interview likewise characterizes the research as limited, especially for brown noise. Claims that a particular color universally improves sleep, focus, anxiety, ADHD, or tinnitus go beyond what these sources establish.
A practical decision rule
Start with the spectrum, then judge the experience: white is the flattest and usually brightest; pink makes a moderate shift toward low frequencies; brown makes the strongest shift toward low frequencies. Select the profile that masks the specific interruption at the lowest comfortable level, and stop if it interferes with sleep, causes discomfort, or prevents you from hearing important sounds. The technical color tells you how the signal is built; your environment and response determine whether it is useful.
