Virtual reality goggles are head-worn devices—more commonly called VR headsets—that show a simulated environment in place of, or alongside, the wearer’s view of the room. A typical headset uses a separate image and lens for each eye, tracks movement, and updates the scene as the wearer moves.
What are virtual reality goggles?
“Virtual reality goggles” usually means a virtual reality headset, also called a head-mounted display. The device sits in front of the eyes and presents an immersive, computer-generated scene. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes VR as an immersive virtual-world experience that may use a headset to replace the surrounding view with a simulated, interactive environment. How do VR goggles work?
A typical headset presents a slightly different image to each eye. Lenses magnify those close-up images so the brain perceives a stereoscopic scene with depth. Sensors detect head movement, and the software updates the view to match; some systems also track eyes, hands, or other movement. The display and computing hardware may be built into a standalone headset or supplied by an external computer connected to the headset. FDA: PEAC July 12–13, 2022 Executive Summary

- Virtual reality (VR): presents a simulated environment that can replace the wearer’s view of the physical surroundings.
- Augmented reality (AR): adds digital imagery to a view of the real world, which may be seen through a camera, display, or optical system. FDA’s AR/VR definitions distinguish this real-world overlay from fully immersive VR. Display standards also cover both VR and AR eyewear types. FDA: IEC 63145-20-10 recognized consensus standard
- Mixed reality (MR): combines physical and virtual surroundings. The label can vary by product, so it is more useful to check whether a device shows a simulated world, the room around you, or both. Meta Horizon OS Developers glossary
Some VR headsets offer passthrough, which lets the wearer view physical surroundings while wearing the device. That feature does not change the basic meaning of “headset”: controllers and other peripherals are separate accessories. Meta Horizon OS Developers glossary

What can differ between VR headsets?
“VR goggles” describes a category, not one design or level of capability. Relevant differences include whether a device is standalone or tethered to a computer, its form factor and display, its field of view, how it tracks movement, its input options, comfort and fit, and software or computer compatibility.
For a dated manufacturer example, Meta’s developer comparison, updated September 30, 2026, describes Quest devices as wireless all-in-one VR headsets and Meta VR Glasses as glasses-form devices tethered to a compute puck. Meta reports horizontal field of view of 110° for Quest 3, 96° for Quest 3S, and 70° for Meta VR Glasses. It lists controllers as Quest’s primary input with hand tracking support; Meta VR Glasses use eyes and hands as primary input and support separately available Touch Plus controllers. These are Meta product details, not specifications shared by all VR headsets. Meta Horizon OS Developers: Compare devices

Use and safety considerations
The FDA identifies possible AR/VR risks including cybersickness, dizziness, fatigue, and head or neck strain, as well as privacy concerns and effects on children or other vulnerable groups that remain uncertain. Use a headset in a clear space and follow the manufacturer’s current instructions for fit, use, and age. The FDA page addresses medical-device use; it does not set one age rule for every consumer headset. FDA: Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality in Medical Devices
