Both exceeded 120 peak decibels in the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s account of the findings. But the white bellbird remains an important benchmark: Guinness World Records lists its call at 125.4 dB(A). Because the studies report different sound measures, the evidence does not establish a single, definitive winner across identical tests.
Which birds are the new contenders?
The bare-throated bellbird (Procnias nudicollis) and red-legged seriema (Cariama cristata) emerged as candidates for the world’s loudest bird in a study by João C. T. Menezes and Jeffrey Podos, published in Evolution on 29 September 2026. The University of Massachusetts Amherst summary says each exceeded 120 peak dB. The journal abstract reports that the study’s maximum measured range reached 122 dB LAeq,20ms at 1 metre in a cotinga, and describes two species as new candidates.
The distinction matters: the highest figure reported in the study’s overall sample is attributed to a cotinga, while the university identifies the two newly named contenders. The available summary does not identify that cotinga as one of the two. Read the findings as adding contenders, not as proof that one bird has conclusively displaced every earlier record-holder.
What did the 2026 study measure?
A broad sample, with a standardized reference distance
Menezes and Podos analyzed original amplitude data from 123 bird species. Their abstract gives a measured range from 64 dB LAeq,20ms at 1 metre in a hummingbird species to 122 dB in a cotinga. The field recordings were gathered between December 2018 and January 2025 in Massachusetts and Brazil, according to the University of Massachusetts account.

The field team used portable high-resolution sound meters alongside laser rangefinders to measure call amplitude and distance. Referencing measurements to 1 metre helps make calls recorded at different distances more comparable; it does not make different metrics or recording protocols interchangeable. The university account quotes researcher Jeffrey Podos: “You have to get your boots on the ground.”
Peak level and LAeq,20ms are not the same figure
A peak level describes a maximum at a moment; LAeq,20ms is an A-weighted equivalent sound level averaged over a 20-millisecond window. The University of Massachusetts summary characterizes the two contenders’ values as peak dB, while the journal abstract reports the cross-species maximum range using LAeq,20ms at 1 metre. These labels describe different summaries of a sound, so a number from one should not be compared as if it were the same measurement as a number from the other.

Is the white bellbird still the loudest bird?
The white bellbird (Procnias albus) remains a leading benchmark. Guinness World Records lists a white bellbird call of 125.4 dB(A), recorded in Brazil on 21 October 2019. That entry is a record listing, not a result from the 2026 study’s cross-species dataset; Guinness also notes that records can change and are not published online immediately.
In a 2019 calibrated comparison in a montane rainforest in the Brazilian Amazon, Jeffrey Podos and Mario Cohn-Haft found that white bellbirds were more than 9 dB louder than screaming pihas. The authors described the difference as roughly triple the sound pressure level. Their paper called the piha’s songs the loudest previously documented among passerine birds, a narrower historical comparison than the question of which bird is loudest overall.

The white bellbird study also observed that a male changed its behavior when a female was on the display perch: it used only its louder song type and turned toward her at close range. The authors raised the possibility that females might need to protect their hearing while sampling mates nearby; they did not establish that the calls cause hearing injury.
Why is there no simple ranking?
Decibels are logarithmic, and sound levels depend on how they are measured. A valid comparison needs to account for the metric, reference distance, calibration, and whether the figure represents one exceptional call or a summary across a species or dataset. Here, the 2026 study reports LAeq,20ms values referenced to 1 metre, while Guinness labels the 2019 white bellbird figure dB(A). Those figures should not be treated as though they came from an identical test.

What traits were associated with louder calls?
In the 2026 comparative analysis, larger body size and wider beak gape were associated with higher maximum amplitude. The study did not find an unequivocal effect for the assessed ecological factors: aerial mobility, habitat density, and mating system. These are associations across the sampled species, not proof that size or gape alone causes a particular bird to call loudly.
