Co-packaged optics (CPO) can reduce the electrical distance between a switch ASIC and its optical engines, improving power efficiency and bandwidth density as data rates rise. The trade is that optics become part of a tightly integrated assembly: thermal design, fiber routing, manufacturing yield, field repair, spares, and supplier coordination become harder. CPO is therefore an architecture decision, not an automatic upgrade over pluggable modules.
What co-packaged optics changes in a data center
In a conventional switch, optical transceivers sit in front-panel cages. Electrical traces run from the switching ASIC across the board and into each pluggable module, where signals are converted between electrical and optical forms. Co-packaged optics places optical engines beside the switch ASIC on a common package or substrate. NVIDIA describes this as integrating the electro-optical conversion directly onto the switch package.

The shorter electrical route reduces loss and can reduce the amount of signal conditioning required to drive high-speed links. Broadcom says its described design reduces path loss and the need for power-hungry digital signal-processing compensation. The benefit becomes more important as signaling rates and aggregate bandwidth increase, because longer high-speed electrical paths consume more power and impose tighter board-design limits.

Power and bandwidth density: the main reason to consider CPO
Shorter electrical links can lower the energy needed to move data from the ASIC to the optical interface. They can also free board area and front-panel space for higher aggregate bandwidth. However, the available headline numbers come from different products and comparison boundaries, so they must not be averaged into a universal CPO saving.
| Reported figure | Source and comparison | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Greater than 3.5× power-consumption savings | Broadcom overview of its CPO approach | Vendor-stated comparison; the excerpt does not define a common industry measurement boundary. |
| 65% lower optics power | Broadcom announcement from September 2025, compared with pluggable solutions in the data it presented | Vendor-reported product comparison, not an independent deployment result. |
| About 4 dB electrical loss and power as low as 9 W | NVIDIA technical example for its described CPO architecture | An example architecture figure, not a specification for every CPO switch. |
When evaluating a proposal, ask whether the quoted power includes only the optical engine, the complete optical subsystem, retimers and DSPs, or the entire chassis. Also ask whether the pluggable comparison uses the same lane speed, reach, temperature, traffic pattern, and cooling assumptions. A lower optics figure can disappear at the system boundary if additional cooling, laser distribution, or service hardware is required.
Where density gains matter
High-radix AI and Ethernet fabrics are the most obvious candidates because many high-speed links must fit into a fixed rack footprint. CPO can reduce the electrical reach that limits board routing and front-panel design. The actual gain depends on the switch generation, lane rate, optical reach, connector layout, and whether the design uses external or on-package laser sources. Request a complete port map and chassis power budget rather than relying on a per-lane claim.

Thermal design becomes a system problem
Optical engines, drivers, lasers, and switching silicon now occupy the same tightly constrained thermal environment. A peer-reviewed technical review identifies thermal management as a central CPO challenge. Heat from the ASIC can affect optical components, while the optical components and their control electronics add their own load to the package and cooling path.

Before selecting a platform, obtain the supplier’s thermal envelope for the exact configuration. It should state:
- ASIC, optical-engine, and laser power at the stated traffic and temperature conditions;
- airflow rate, inlet-temperature limits, and allowable pressure drop for air-cooled systems;
- cold-plate, coolant, flow-rate, and redundancy assumptions for liquid-cooled systems;
- hot-spot temperatures and sensor locations, not just an average chassis figure;
- derating behavior when fans, pumps, or optical lanes fail; and
- whether quoted power includes management controllers, retimers, laser sources, and cooling overhead.
Thermal qualification should cover the intended rack environment, not only a laboratory board. Ask for lane-level monitoring, alarm thresholds, and the procedure for operating with a partially degraded optical engine. The evidence available for this topic does not establish independent, cross-vendor operational measurements, so a supplier’s thermal claim should remain tied to its product and test conditions.
Reliability and serviceability: fewer interfaces, larger repair scope
Pluggable optics provide a small, replaceable failure unit. CPO can reduce the number of high-speed electrical interfaces and separate modules, but an optical-engine failure may be physically integrated with a switch board or package. Corning states: “Because this is a highly integrated system, parts inside the box are generally not field-replaceable or serviceable.”
That does not mean every CPO failure requires replacing an entire switch. It does mean the operator must establish the actual replacement boundary before deployment. A failed engine might require a line-card swap, a complete switch replacement, or a supplier repair return. Each option changes spare quantities, mean time to repair, shipping arrangements, and the amount of traffic that must be rerouted.

How to evaluate reliability evidence
Corning’s 2026 article reports a public test of one million link hours without a link flap. Corning also notes that link flaps are brief connectivity disruptions and a closely watched reliability metric in high-performance data-center networks. The available description does not provide enough protocol, environmental detail, or independent comparison data to turn that result into a field failure rate.
Broadcom’s September 2025 announcement separately reports higher link reliability in its own presented data. Treat both statements as evidence about the named vendor platforms and tests, not as an industry-wide guarantee. Request the test duration, lane count, temperature cycling, error criteria, repair events, and denominator used for any reliability claim.
Service questions to settle in the contract
- What component is replaced after an optical-engine, laser, connector, or package failure?
- Is the replacement performed in the rack, at a depot, or only by the original manufacturer?
- What spare-unit ratio is recommended for the expected failure domain?
- How are firmware, calibration data, and optical alignment preserved during a board swap?
- What telemetry identifies a degrading lane before it causes a link flap?
- What is the guaranteed replacement time in each operating region?
Fiber routing and installation are no longer routine details
Dense CPO assemblies place unusual demands on fiber placement, strain relief, cleanliness, and alignment. Corning describes an assembly routing well over 1,000 fibers and landing them on photonic integrated circuits with sub-micron alignment tolerances. Those figures describe Corning’s assembly and are not a universal design requirement, but they show why ordinary patch-cord practices are insufficient for some CPO systems.

A Corning and Broadcom infrastructure paper identifies three concrete risks during CPO fiber deployment: damage to the glass surface, excessive tensile stress, and damage to the protective coating. Any of these can create latent failures that are difficult to diagnose after the assembly is closed.

Installation controls operators should specify
- Minimum bend radius and routing paths for every fiber bundle;
- strain-relief points that prevent load from reaching photonic-integrated-circuit interfaces;
- cleaning, inspection, and end-face acceptance criteria;
- tools and training for handling dense arrays without scraping or kinking fibers;
- process controls for sub-micron placement and repeatable adhesive or termination work; and
- inspection records that tie each assembly to a serial number and test result.
These controls affect manufacturing yield as well as field reliability. A design that performs well in a clean factory may be difficult to install or rework in a live data center unless the supplier provides a complete handling procedure.

The choice is not simply an efficiency contest. It is a comparison of modularity, power, service scope, and ecosystem maturity for a particular switch generation.
| Decision factor | Co-packaged optics | Front-panel pluggables | Linear-drive pluggable approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical distance | Shortest route because engines sit beside the ASIC | Longer board path to the front panel | Can reduce module signal processing, but still uses a pluggable form factor |
| Power opportunity | Potentially lower electrical-link and optics power at high bandwidth | Established but may require more signal conditioning at higher rates | Supplier claims emphasize lower module processing power; exact savings are product-specific |
| Field replacement | Often a board or larger assembly; parts inside the box are generally not field-serviceable, according to Corning | Individual module can normally be removed and replaced | Retains pluggable replacement model |
| Supplier flexibility | Depends on package, optical engine, and switch-platform qualification | Mature multi-vendor sourcing and staged purchasing | Coherent argues that this model preserves pay-as-you-go and multi-vendor advantages |
| Fiber work | Dense internal routing and tight alignment can require specialized processes | More familiar patching and connector handling | Similar external fiber work to other pluggables |
| Lifecycle cost evidence | No current independent, like-for-like total-cost study established | Modularity can simplify spares, but power and port-density costs vary | Economic outcome depends on the exact platform and procurement model |
Coherent’s position that linear-drive pluggables could preserve pay-as-you-go and multi-vendor benefits, and delay CPO adoption, is a supplier’s strategic assessment rather than a settled market forecast. The sources reviewed do not establish a comprehensive interoperability matrix or current standard-conformance result across all products.

A CPO deployment can tie the optical engine, switch ASIC, package, firmware, fiber assembly, and service contract to one qualification path. That integration may improve optimization, but it can narrow substitution options if one component changes. Confirm the exact optical reach, lane map, breakout modes, management interface, firmware dependencies, and approved optics before committing to a fleet.
Best Value
A staged rollout should begin with a limited failure domain and measurable acceptance criteria. Run representative traffic, thermal stress, link-flap monitoring, optics telemetry, maintenance drills, and firmware upgrades before expanding. Keep a documented migration path for existing pluggable-based rows so that a CPO issue does not block unrelated capacity additions.
Lifecycle economics: power is only one line item
No current independent, like-for-like total-cost-of-ownership study establishes that CPO is cheaper over a complete operating life. The economic result depends on packaging yield, thermal equipment, fiber assembly labor, service contracts, spare assemblies, downtime exposure, and the value of additional bandwidth in the same rack space.
Build the business case with separate rows for:
- switch and optical-engine acquisition cost;
- cooling, power-distribution, and rack-capacity changes;
- fiber-array, connector, inspection, and installation work;
- recommended spare boards or complete switches;
- depot repair, advance replacement, and logistics charges;
- planned maintenance windows and traffic-drain capacity; and
- the financial impact of an outage or a delayed replacement.
Do not convert a vendor’s lower optics-power figure directly into a lifecycle saving. The figure may exclude cooling, chassis power, or the cost of replacing an integrated assembly.
A practical decision checklist for operators
- Define the workload. Record port speed, optical reach, traffic profile, rack density, and growth horizon. CPO benefits are strongest where electrical reach and bandwidth density are actual constraints.
- Normalize measurements. Require power at the same boundary for CPO and the alternative, including DSPs, retimers, lasers, controllers, and cooling assumptions.
- Map the failure domain. Write down exactly what is replaced after each likely failure and how much traffic is lost during the procedure.
- Validate thermal headroom. Test the intended inlet temperature, airflow or coolant conditions, and degraded-cooling scenarios.
- Audit fiber processes. Review bend-radius rules, strain relief, cleaning, inspection, alignment, and technician training with the installer and manufacturer.
- Check ecosystem commitments. Confirm qualified suppliers, firmware support, interoperability, optical reach options, and the migration path for future switch generations.
- Model total cost. Include spares, downtime, service logistics, power, cooling, and installation rather than using optics power as a proxy for total cost.
- Run a bounded pilot. Measure link flaps, error counters, temperatures, power, replacement time, and maintenance effort in a representative failure domain before broad rollout.
When CPO is a sensible fit
CPO is most defensible when a data center is approaching electrical-link, front-panel, or rack-power limits; can qualify a tightly integrated platform; and has the operational discipline to stock and replace larger assemblies. It is less attractive when modular, multi-vendor procurement and rapid field replacement outweigh the value of maximum density, or when the facility cannot support the proposed thermal and fiber-installation processes.
The right question is not whether CPO is universally better than pluggable optics. It is whether the specific CPO system delivers enough normalized power or density benefit to justify its packaging, thermal, fiber, service, and supplier constraints for the operator’s workload and failure model.
