What the exhaust springs do
At a spring-retained slip joint, one pipe fits into a sleeve or over another pipe. The spring hooks across the connection and pulls the sections together, helping keep the joint assembled. This describes a particular joint design, not every motorcycle exhaust. Some systems use springs at header, link-pipe, or muffler connections; others may use different joint-retention arrangements. The exhaust maker’s instructions determine where springs belong and how they should be fitted.

A spring hook puller is made to help engage and remove exhaust springs. Yamaha lists a spring hook puller as useful for removing exhaust-system springs in its regional accessory listing: Yamaha Spring Hook Puller. That listing does not establish fitment for every motorcycle or spring, so check whether a tool suits the spring you are handling.

Use a suitable tool and follow the instructions for your exhaust. Yoshimura’s product-specific instructions for GSX-S1000/KATANA exhausts warn: “Make sure that Exhaust Spring is hooked to spring installation tool firmly. If neglected, it may cause injury.” This is a caution from that installation manual, not a general safety standard; it underscores the need to keep the spring securely engaged while working.
Checks after installation
Scorpion’s fitting guide recommends checking that the system is aligned, that the exhaust clears moving parts, and that there are no leaks after fitting.
